Loved watching this as I did a bunch of practice sandwiches and then I needed to quilt a little over one yard piece of fabric to make a duffel bag. I decided to try a pantograph. My struggle was getting the right placement on the next row. It still came out beautifully but this would have helped if I had watched this first. Thank you! Now for he next quilt.

Leah, let me say Thank You for all of your videos on using a quilting frame with a home sewing machine, to quilt your quilts! I find your videos to be VERY helpful! I will be using a frame, soon! (It's being shipped, right now).. and will refer to your videos, as I set up my frame, and when I start my first quilt on my new frame!

No, not really. If you raise the back rail significantly, it will effect your stitch quality and you may begin breaking thread.

You can try using the start / stop button on the machine instead. I would try it and then if it’s too awkward set the frame lower and use your foot pedal instead. I’ve changed mine recently back to a sit down and it’s my reward for 30 minutes on the treadmill !

Wonderful Pat! It's really easy to get stuck with frames and bigger machines especially. Just remember to take baby steps and try only one new thing with your frame with each quilt. It also helps to SLOWLY increase the size of the quilt you're using rather than jumping in with something too big too soon.

I'm so glad this video helped you figure that out. The WORST thing in the world is buyers remorse. I'd advise renting time on a longarm machine in your area or looking at the Continuum Frame which works differently. With a 3 rail frame, it will take up a lot more space, but the time between shifts (and the entire shifting process) is faster and easier. leahday.com/collections/grace-machines-and-frames/products/continuum-frames-and-accessories

Awesome video. My mother made a lot of quilts by hand and I always told her there are things like this to make them faster but she told me she had the time and like the art form of hand sewing. I still have 2 quilts she made 30 years ago and a very big denim sleeping bag that she made from 8 inch square pieces.

I love hand quilting too, especially the group-work side of it. My plan is to make a wooden quilting frame that's collapsible and I can have a little party once a month and have a small group come quilt with me. It builds great memories and it's a great way to catch up with friends, and yes, you're right - the quilts last the test of time too!

Thank you, Leah! Yet another fantastic tutorial. I learn so much each time I watch you work and I adore your personality. I think this frame will be perfect for my needs now that I've seen you advance a quilt side to side. I rarely make baby quilts. Most of mine are between twin and king, so this tutorial was particularly beneficial to see. It doesn't look terribly troublesome and looks like a lot of fun! I would still like to see you do ruler quilting on this before I make a final decision though, if possible. I like using rulers to quilt, so it would be good to know how smooth it goes with the Q Zone frame. Be blessed!
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you Melissa! I have a video ready for you next week! The ruler quilting is a bit trickier than I expected. There's a lot more to it than quilting on a home machine in a table and you have to take into account the size of the machine and if you are left or right handed, which usually isn't something that makes a big deal, but it does with this! So yes, more on that next Friday and more videos soon. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface here!

@@LeahDay Also, I was talking about the little black Z-clips on the elastic clamps that go around your quilt as it rolls up on the frame...pretty easy to tuck that black elastic in there rather than sideways back through the elastic that is around the quilt. Thank you for all your Q-Zone videos! I have watched them all....more than once! I just bought one of these along with a Babylock Jazz 2 with the 12" throat space. You said in another video that you quilt with the feed dogs up. If you quilt right to left, are they down in that instance? How does that work?
@LeahDay
@LeahDay Жыл бұрын
Yes, the feed dogs are continuing to move and you may occasionally feel them pull on the quilt. But if you set your stitch length to 0, the feed dogs will only be bouncing up and down - not pulling hard. I find this gives me better tension and stitch quality, but you'll just have to test it to see what works best with your machine!

@LeahDay
@LeahDay 4 жыл бұрын
I've been playing with this a bit with a home sewing machine. The trickiest part is remembering to press on the gas BEFORE you move the machine. Once I got used to that, I pretty much just pressed firmly and ran the machine at a steady, fast pace, then worked to keep the carriage / machine moving at a good pace with that speed. It will take practice and patience, but it is fun and much faster than pushing the quilt over the table!

I want to see how to quilt a block on a quilt that is larger than the throat space without it looking like I stopped in the middle. I am not talking about meandering or stippling, but like feathers or some other pattern that is specific for a larger block than what fits in the throat space. Leah, can you do a tutorial on something along those lines please?
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 5 жыл бұрын
It's on my list Melony! Please understand that when you first get started with any frame, it's best to begin at the beginning and all-over style quilting is the best choice. More advanced, custom style quilting is going to be challenging because it takes time to plan and line up and quite honestly, you wouldn't be able to see it in this quilt because it's so busy.

Check the setup instructions that came with your frame. Basically you unscrew the rubber end, then tighten the little bolts to the top and bottom so it locks securely. Remember, this is just fabric and thread! Start with a small quilt that you don't have tons of emotional attachment to (maybe even dislike it a little bit) and then it won't matter if it's not perfect. Or stick with plain quilt sandwiches and turn them into dog / cat blankies for the animal shelter. All practice is great practice!

I am searching for a frame for my mid arm Janome 1600P and watching you use this frame with a home domestic machine I am really leaning toward this frame. I want to learn how to use the pantogram with this frame. I will most likely use this frame in the sitting down position. Being an elderly person sitting is better than too much standing. Standing to change the quilt in the frame will be good exercise from just sitting. Velma Dagley

I've shared one video on quilting with pantos on a Q-Zone Hoop Frame which you can find here: freemotionproject.com/2019/06/quilt-with-pantographs-on-a-qzone-frame.html Personally I think quilting a design freehand with all-over style quilting will be an easier option. Shifting the quilt and lining up the panto properly is challenging. So instead of depending on a perfect shift, simply pick one design, learn how to quilt it by memorizing the rules of the design, then quilt it in rows over your quilt.

If you were to make a medium sized throw for per say a couch blanket, how long would it take in hours for your to quilt it with your domestic machine. Also what is the neck space of the machine that you are using in this video? Thank you for all your informative videos!
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 3 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say exactly in hours how long a quilt will take to quilt on a home machine. I can say on a frame, it will be faster and easier on your body because you're not pushing the weight and bulk of the quilt over a table top. The only downside is it can feel a bit start-stop with a home machine on a frame because you have a limited amount of space and then have to shift and clamp the quilt again. This machine had an 8 1/2 inch harp. The one I'm using now has a 9 inch harp. The bigger the machine, the more space you will have and many quilters end up switching to a Qnique 15 or Qnique 19 after a few months because more space really does make a big difference!

Oh yes, this is the perfect frame for custom quilting. The smaller space is actually ideal for picking designs for different spaces rather than quilting edge to edge or doing pantographs.

How high is the right throat of your machine ? I'm looking bying a new one for the QHopp frame, but I hesitate between a high Juki or a more complex Janome continental. Doesn't the roll of quilt being to big for the throat ? (I hope you understand what I mean)

The frame adjusts in height so you lift the back rail as the quilted quilt builds up. So basically the height of the machine bed doesn't matter - the frame will adjust to compensate.

If I'm new to quilting on a setup using my domestic sewing machine, how can I test it out prior to purchase? Is there a trial period to be able to return the product, if I find it unsatisfactoy? Thx
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 5 жыл бұрын
That's a very good question! We do offer a 30 day money back guarantee. We will need to know within that first 30 days that there is an issue with the frame and you're not happy with how it's working. You would be responsible for the shipping costs to return the frame to Grace Company in Utah. So if you think that's a possibility make sure to open the boxes very carefully and remove the pieces knowing how they go back in. Set up your frame the day it comes in and begin quilting on it and run it through its paces thoroughly. The more practice you get, the more comfortable you will feel and hopefully you'll be able to know if this style of quilting will work for you.

Unfortunately Cuties are selling out so fast, they are impossible to get in stock right now. As soon as we're out of this backorder situation, I will share videos on the Cutie. The normal retail price is $999.99, but prices are increasing July 1st.

Keep in mind, when I was clamping with the leader, that was my very first time using the frame in a real way so I was probably slower in general. I'll have to time myself. It definitely feels more stable with the leader cloth than without it.

How important it is to roll the back of the quilt when using this system? I'm concerned that if I am going to quilt a queen size (most of my quilt sizes) I will not have much room left to actually quilt if I have to roll it with each advancement. I have a Juki 98TL machine with a 9" throat. Hope this makes sense to you. Thanks!
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, with a big quilt and a home machine, you won't have much space by the end. I have heard of quilters starting in the center and working outward instead. I haven't had a chance to try that yet, but I think it could work, just make sure your quilt is nicely centered in the middle of the batting and backing fabric.

What is the source for your speed controller. Does it plug into your foot pedal port?
@LeahDay
@LeahDay Жыл бұрын
Yes, this was a Speed Controller for a Juki 2010Q. I found it did work with this Juki F400, but I honestly don't recommend this machine for frame quilting because the harp space is not really big enough and the head was quite bulky and made it difficult to see.

Question: as you did the slide to move the quilt so you could finish the row, you removed all of the clamps from the frame. On the back bar if you remove only the clamp farthest from your machine, can you slide the other clamps with the quilt still in place under those clamps along the bar to help keep the quilt from shifting and having to realign the entire quilt?
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 5 жыл бұрын
This is an AWESOME question Beverly! I tried this out last night and it works PERFECTLY! I just remove the black straps and the side clamps, then remove one clamp in the direction I need to shift, then shimmy the whole quilt - still attached with the top and bottom clamps down the frame. SO much faster and easier! I'll be sharing a video on this soon and thank you for the inspiring idea!

Hello Leah, how tall can you adjust the frame? I'm wondering if that can help eliminate lowering your head to see behind the needle as you quilt? Does sitting change the perspective? Thx
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 5 жыл бұрын
I have this set to the maximum height right now, which is 42 inches from the floor to the top of the frame. The lowest height I believe is 21 inches. The main issue is the bulky front of the home machine. The bar on the carriage, the foot, and the bulky front of the machine are not the best visually, but it isn't a deal breaker for me. I still prefer standing up and when needed, I can bend forward or back a bit and then stretch when I'm done. The best thing about moving the machine is it's faster! I'm not sitting hunched over for hours on end to get a quilt done!

I am a little confused between channel locks and carriage locks and if you are using the terms interchangeably. My channel lock is at the rear and difficult to reach from the front.My carriage lock is more on the side. Is it just the carriage lock that you are putting up and down to sew a straight line and to maintain your sewn position when advancing.
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 5 жыл бұрын
I use the term channel lock no matter whether it's locking the carriage in place or locking the machine in place. I'm locking the channel lock on the machine, which stops it from moving forward and back so I can stitch a straight line from edge to edge.

I appreciate the intent of this video, however it is incomplete. You mention nothing regarding attaching the lower leader. It wasn't until I saw her pick it up that I knew it was on. You also talj about basting, shoyld that be done on this machine.? And your pinning, is that just at the top or all the way around? Is it the basting? Please consider this is a new process for most of us and would appreciate complete instructions and perhaps an instructional sheet to be included.

I have a SINGER 9960 is that ok to use with this table??
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, your machine will definitely work, but you won't likely have very much room for quilting. The harp space on that Singer is fairly small. Just understand realistically you will have 3-4 inches of vertical space to quilt x the length of the frame (32 - 36 inches).

You mentioned in a comment knowing whether one is left or right-handed is important…. Can you elaborate?
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 3 жыл бұрын
Your dominant hand will be on the handlebar, your non-dom hand on the ruler. With this particular machine being left handed is an advantage because there's more base on the machine to the right of the needle. I know - a bit technical! But honestly having done this more it doesn't really matter so long as you have a good bit of support around the needle area on your machine to support the ruler.

You'll need to unscrew 6 screws, pull off the back bar, then disconnect anything you've plugged into the machine like a speed controller, lift it off the carriage and place it on your table and plug it in where you're going to piece. With practice, it should take less than 2 minutes!

About the frame is your front rail even in height with the back one
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 4 жыл бұрын
I usually have the back rail slightly higher - that rail is set by the height of the machine. You want the back rail to be around 1/4 inch higher than the machine bed. The front rail can be level with the back rail or slightly lower. Just play with that and see what works best for your machine and your quilts.

30-34 inches or so. It really depends on the machine you have on the frame. With a home machine and carriage, you will have around 34 inches. With a Qnique longarm, you will have a little bit less space side to side because it takes up a bit more room in the frame.

why does everyone suggest quilting from the center out? Obviously you aren't doing this in this video. Just curious.
@LeahDay
@LeahDay 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the machine and setup you are using. On a home machine on a table (machine stationary), it's best to quilt from the center from the quilt. This means you knock out the hard part first and the sides and border are easier to quilt because less quilt is in the arm of the machine. On a frame, you begin quilting from the top edge loaded on the frame. It doesn't matter if you're using a home machine or longarm, on a frame, you typically begin from the top. The Q-Zone Hoop Frame is a bit of an exception and you CAN quilt from the center out with this frame too. You just have to experiment with it and see what works best for you.
