The burning connector issue is really overblown, its not even 1% of the total 4080/4090 sales. 99% of the burned connectors was a user issue but nvidia is not fault free.

​​@@Pandemonium088How do you know that? According to some repair services, most of 4090 issues were caused by the connector itself. It is simply incapable of delivering constant 450W, so it overheats and eventually burns. Thus the blame is on the manufacturer, not users. I have not heard that 4080 users were struggling from the same issue, despite the fact that 4080 has exactly the same 16-pin power connector. Do you really think 4090 owners are the only ones, who are dumb and do not know how to connect and use their cards? 2 16-pin power connectors on 5090 clearly confirm that Nvidia is fully aware of the issue and is going to fix it the easiest way - by limiting power delivery through one of each connectors at 300W. They know that ~300W is the optimal amount of power to be conducted through a single 16-pin socket.

@@lost4356 $1999 is steep when 5080 is $999 in the US. My original view was 5080 was going to sell for $1200 untl the recent drops in price of the 4080 proving it unpopular. It went from £1269 launch down to just £889 more recently (£839 for the 4080 non S, £800 Used).

Hmmm... my 4080 is almost two years old, but I got it for $1360 because I wanted a good MSI model. Don't get me wrong, I got a lot of value from it, being playing at maxed out settings and 1440p to all my games, using frame gen for a nice high refresh rate experience and all, but the 4090 was $1599 in the place where I got the 4080 at that price. These news are making me regret not getting the 4090. I just needed an extra $239, which is the value my 4080 already lost when the Super came out. For a GPU that is that old, it compares quite well the 5080, and if that thing happens to be cost $1000, or more, then the 4090 didn't lose as much value as the 3090Ti, and considering I paid $160 more for a GPU that was already $200 too expensive, I 100% didn't make the right choice. This goes to show that either the 5090 is going to be too expensive and the 4090 didn't age badly at all, or, Nvidia isn't trying to push the 5080 because they don't have reasons to. Like you said, the 4080 Super isn't that old, it still selling well.

If 5080 mem bandwidth is really 896 GB/s, it is not that far from 4090. In terms of SMs quantity, if 4090 has 60% more of them than 5080, this means that 5080 can outperform it only if it functions at significantly higher clocks (3500+ MHz). Because in terms of IPC improvement the will not be much of difference between Ada and Blackwell, maybe 10%. But according to rumors, Blackwell will be clocked just 200-300 MHz higher than Ada. This means that if we got the real specs of 5080 and all the rumors are true, it will have a hard time to even match 4090, let alone beat it (in raster). RT is a different story though, as Nvidia can significantly improve 5th gen RT cores. So maybe that rumor we heard, about 5080 being 10% faster than 4090, was solely about RT performance, not raster.

The 5080 is massively skimped. A big reason for this could be that AMD has ditched the high-end and enthusiast class segments with RDNA 4, so Nvidia don't feel pressured to push the 5080 as hard as they intended to. Back when the RTX 50 Series were rumoured to be on a custom TSMC 3N node, the 5080 was shaping up to be a beast. It was said to have 120 SMs with 20GB of VRAM on a 320-bit bus on a fully enabled GB203 GPU. If the 5080 had those specs, it would substantially outperform the 4090. You can really see how powerful Nvidia was planning to make it before tonnes of leaks appeared saying that AMD has ditched the high-end and enthusiast class segments. From the possibility of a bleeding edge 120 SM 5080 now being out the window to a paltry 84 SM 5080.

They will have a different number of SMs, a larger or smaller memory bus, etc. With the current situation, I think Nvidia is going to release their least performant configuration of the 5080. I would love to be wrong. Nvidia should prove me wrong then.

I own a 3090Ti and besides the issue's with finding the 40 series at that time. I'll just wait to see if the Ti version to be released. Besides bandwidth I still can play AAA games at 4K without an issue. Plus, we all know 50 series will be hard to find with all the bit mining still going on.
