It's more like when the company is underperforming, something have to change. There are many new focuses and directions that the company have to take to slowly regain its current trajectory of revenue. Either the big exec people have to go, or the lower position have to go, and add in new position that fits more with the company's new direction forward. Maybe they want to focus more on advertising to new people first to gather customers and capitals, then the dev people who doesn't work directly on the advertising campaign is redundant at the time. When they have the capitals, they can rehire people latter. So "strong performer but at the wrong place, wrong time" is reasonable decision to let go. It's all about keeping the company afloat and meeting current business direction first. A good business would fire some of the exec, the low performed low position people and even the "strong performer but at the wrong place, wrong time" low position people. Then that business will monitor the new employees to see their progresses and metrics compare to the previously fired people's and decide who to keep, who to continue fire, then rehire until that business reach a sustainable workforce for the company's direction. This is all just business theory and of course in reality, the exec people could just want to benefit themselves. Of course for the employee, this sucks, but for business owners and people at exec level, this is something one must decide so that the company doesn't go completely bankrupt, which will be way worse than current situation.

All during this time we were told, " your'e lucky you got a job." The only advice I can give you young people, was what my dad told me, "your'e never going to make money working for somebody else." @8:25 hit hard. During c0v1d, I was and still currently am working at a health care business in a IT role. Got furloughed since the "future was unforeseeable" and the IT department only has "non-profit generating roles" , they eventually brought a few of us back but not everyone. I am still sour about this and now do the very minimum amount of work as since my services apparently in no way impact income of the facility. The problem is not the immediate managers but the CFO/CIO/CEO, you know all the C's who got raises and praises during.

I was wondering if you could give your thoughts on the guy that was fired because his employer threw a surprise birthday party for him which caused him anxiety and when he ran away from the party he was repremanded by his boss then fired because the company claimed he was violent. He was then awarded $ 450,000 by the court which the company is appealing.

The guy was a very sensitive introvert, and they forced the party on him against his direct, explicit, and unambiguous request, and they didn't like his reaction. It was unnecessary to do a party. Not everyone enjoys their birthday.

This is illegal in the UK. You can't be firing people while you are also hiring others. It shows you have the jobs you just fire who you don't like. This gets you in bug trouble and rightfully sued.

I also hate when giving “pep talks” or trying to justify their crappy management of the company, they use sports and military lingo, or analogies, or euphemisms. Like they are high-ranking military officers mapping out a significant war strategy or football play. These people are goons, and I wouldn’t follow them on any “journey.” Not even to the latrine, which is apparently where they are headed.

Better is probably just spreading this out over several months in order to avoid any red flags being raised. If they'd fire 3000 people all at once in order to 'trim the fat' the severance packages have to be upped significantly.

They're in on it, trust me. Lots of these parasitic startups, sell a good story, get money to build their "product", rent space, hire people, talk the talk, then a couple of years later ... their house of cards falls and the individuals take the rest of the money and basically bail. They often file bankruptcy and drag things along to look more legitimate - (or perhaps even incompetent), so no criminal conspiracy is ever suspected. The tell tale sign is when they clearly take no responsibility for their actions and blame everyone but themselves.

Its so easy to just lay staff off through Zoom but Josh you should know all the crooks and nannies with how they track their staff cos you are an IT guys too, maybe its the time they spend online, are they on time handing in their work? or it could be how many clicks or searches they did on real estate (or non real estate). There should be a law that layoffs have to happen in person unless otherwise indicated by the employee. food prices are rising everywhere, even in Asia albeit not as much America probably, not sure if there will be a wave of unemployment hitting the community, we are just living to see another day.

Who are these people that are still staying with this company at this point? Do you just not give a shit about how they treat employees or are you just stuck financially? Like, okay it's not easy for a lot of people to just up and leave a job, we all have responsibilities. So, if you're not leaving simply for the fact that you can't.. then that's understandable. Other than that though... why else would you want to stay here? If I were a current employee and saw this, why would I at all feel optimistic about continuing to work for them?

Always best to quit on your terms, always have another job ready, and if you feel you've hit a stump at work, move on. Very few businesses will benefit you by staying more than 1-2 years. Keep looking for the next best place while employed and you'll never get screwed over like this. If you're going to be another cog in the machine, at least grind where it's worth it for you.

Funny how these shumcks never consider that the best offense might be to fire themselves. Bc, let's admit it, if you've fired half your company, after building it up to that, then you as the CEO and executives have failed, first and foremost, and so CEO and executives should be first to leave. Then the new CEO that comes in can fire the rest of the employees; at least s/he has the benefit of not having been involved in the downfall.
