Vince another great video! I am glad that you decided to rebuild the calipers for the Rolls as a learning experience. I know that buying new or rebuilt calipers would be very expensive in the UK. Here in the US it is almost always cheaper and easier to buy new or rebuilt calipers for more common cars that are still on the road. I enjoyed your video to show me what I will need to do if I ever decide to rebuild my own caliper in the future.

The trick to loosening a brake pipe nut is to give it a quick light tighten up first then loosen it, then move it back & forth to brake up an corrosion in the threads, tightening first brakes up any corrosion on the threads pushing any debris outward from the tread first, this does only work 80% of the time! I have a feeling you did this without knowing was doing it! lol
@dodgydruid Жыл бұрын
On ebay etc, you can buy a modern "one man bleeding" kit for about £13, you need to be able to hook it up to an air compressor. Its actually quite an ingenious design, you have a tank with a cistern type valve you place into the reservoir after filling the tank up, you hook your "gun" up to air, put the tube onto the nipple, crack the nipple and hit the trigger which pulls fluid down through the pipe, when you see clean fluid come through just do up the nipple, fill the reservoir tank up with some more fluid then rinse and repeat, no pedal to the floor with someone helping needed and it takes about a minute to pull through each circuit node, you prob take longer filling the reservoir filler up than the actual bleeding lol
@chrispybee Жыл бұрын
Great work on those pesky brakes. It makes me think that it’s a possibility I could look at changing mine one day. Breaks ✅
@M1LAD81 Жыл бұрын
When you're bleeding brakes, you need two people ideally. One person to pump the pedal a few times and then hold it in the depressed position, then the other person cracks open the nipple and lets the fluid drain out and then you nip it up again. The pedal person then needs to pull the pedal up and repeat the process with the other calipers. When bleeding the brakes, you start with the one furthest from the reservoir.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but they make special wrenches called "flare nut wrenches" that lessen the likelihood that you mess those flare nuts up. If you want to invest in them. Good luck, Vince!!!
@ericrichardson3332 Жыл бұрын
By the way Vince O-rings flatten over time and then wear allows fluid to move past either from high pressure then low pressure follows the fluid that made it past and eventually it will become worse and leak with no pressure
@aldo9923 Жыл бұрын
The LHM fluid doesn’t do harm to the dust cover but it sure does help collect dust! Just a thought.
@nilz23 Жыл бұрын
You should get some flare wrenches for those kinds of hydraulic fittings. They are almost like the box end of of a crescent wrench but have a small space you can fit the tubing through. That being said I've always used regular crescent wrenches for replacing brake lines and bleeding.

Nice work !! Trying to catch up with all the episodes. , but buy yourself a few cans of breaker cleaner. It will do miracles
@APSuk2 Жыл бұрын
You can tell its been leaking for a while from the inside of the wheel, all the brake dust and dirt has stuck to the fluid and has a wet appearance which is a dead giveaway. The flares on the brake pipes are referred to as convex and concave, no problem making them out of copper brake pipe as that is what 99% of garages do when replacing them as it is much easier to work with being a softer metal so no need for a pipe bender and will not rust like steel. The brake pipe flare nuts are standard, can be purchased online or at a motor factor. Sorry to say Vince but that passenger brake disc needs replacing, you can tell from the colour it is contaminated with LHM fluid. Changing just one disc is not recommended as it will cause an imbalance in braking performance between the passenger and drivers side brakes, this is even more important in relation to the front brakes as they do well over 60% of the work when you press the brake pedal, that is why brake discs are sold as an axel set by reputable motor factors. You can try cleaning it with brake cleaner but the LHM fluid has been in contact with it for a long time and this allows the fluid to seep into the metal. Just look at the contact surface where the pads touch, on the passenger side it looks green and it should be silver like chrome. Obviously you are changing the pads but there is the risk you will contaminate the brake pad friction material again with the contaminated brake disk and also because the brake disc is contaminated it will not give the braking performance required and there will be an imbalance between the driver and passenger side which can cause the car to pull to one side under braking. This will be picked up on MOT when it is tested in the brake rollers. For bleeding the brakes on your own you need a brake bleeding bottle that has a one way valve in it to stop air being drawn into the system on the upward stroke of the brake pedal. You can partially fill your jar with LHM fluid so the bottom of the pipe is covered in fluid and this acts as a one way valve stopping the air getting back in. We use a pump in the garage so you can bleed the system on your own. I would not be running the engine as this will engage the brake servo forcing the fluid through the system to fast, just pump the pedal with the engine off as this gives you far more control with the pedal as you do not want to be stomping it down as this can invert the seals in the brake master cylinder as remember in normal use the pedal does not travel all the way to the floor so the seals in the brake master cylinder are not used to such a large motion of travel so slow and steady pumps on the pedal during downward as well as the upward travel. When you have two people you can lock off the brake bleed nipple when the person operating the pedal releases it again stopping air being drawn back into the system. You should start bleeding the system at the wheel furthest away from the brake master cylinder and work you way towards it finishing at the wheel closest to the brake master cylinder this ensures all the air is removed from the system. I would be bleeding the entire system as you did not cap off the brake pipes (air tight) when you had the calipers off so as more and more fluid drained it would of allowed more and more air into the system. I also over fill the brake fluid reservoir before bleeding as you will be loosing fluid during the bleeding process and this will also insure the level does not go to low as again if it does air will be drawn into the system via the brake fluid reservoir. I would not be using the lights on the dash to tell you if the fluid is to low, you need to be physically looking at the level indicator on the brake fluid reservoir to check the level is not to low. The sensor will tell you the fluid is low but not if it has drained the brake fluid reservoir allowing air into the system. Getting the level exact is not important during bleeding you just need to know that the brake fluid reservoir is not drained of fluid during the bleeding process. As I have said before this is a safety critical system so better to be safe than sorry and just do a quick bleed of all four corners before a road test as there is nothing quite like having no brakes. All the best Adam
@Mymatevince Жыл бұрын
Thanks Adam. That is a shame about the disc but it is better that the contamination happened on a worn disc and not a new one, that would be soul destroying. The bleeding process sounds like I used to do on the old Mini and MGB GT but on this Rolls apparently you just have the pedal depressed half way as it is pressurised and then open up the bleed nipple until clean air free fluid comes out, and like you mention don't let the fluid drop from the reservoir. The annoying thing is there are also various other bleed nipples on the car underneath but I'm not sure if the air would have got as far as that bit. There is a good video on KZbin on bleeding the Rolls Silver Shadow braking system which is similar but using a different fluid and mine one doesn't have a master cylinder like the Shadow. I hope I have done it correctly, it actually seems easier to do than the standard system of holding the brake pedal and doing up the bleed nipple and then releasing the brake pedal and opening up the bleed nipple and so on. As always thank you for the detailed and super helpful comments...Keep up the good work!
