I think a lot of it comes down to younger folk not being so interested in cars, they'd rather watch what they perceive as a simple quick fix on a small piece of technology as you get the result within one video. I'd say that your interests change with age, until I could drive I didn't have much interest in cars myself. These days I love watching car restoration videos, very satisfying and the process is interesting!

You should give yourself a big pat on the back Vince that car looks beautiful. Compared to how it looked and how it was overall when you first showed it to us it looks absolutely wonderful. We also know how much effort and work you put into it to fix it properly no bodge jobs everything done superbly with new parts where required. The best part is you can feel reassured if you wanted to sell it, that you have done an extraordinary effort in repairing this car and you could pass it on to a new owner without fear that it's just a surface job and in fact it's a very in depth repair all round. A brilliant work in repair Vince, made more exceptional knowing that you didn't get a great number of views compared to your other fix it videos. No Vince you have persevered with this car and have achieved a remarkable outcome. It looks terrific. I personally love these Rolls fix it videos, I like the fact it's outside, they are wonderful videos.

That patch looks like a repair with leather filler and they have not sanded it down properly. I would sand it down to remove the ridge and if needed use some more leather filler and dye to blend it in. Worth getting a kit and you can repair your front seat the same time mate. If you take your time and follow the instructions the results are really good.

It is looking a ton better. Leather repair is slow and tedious. I had a cream leather lounge suite given to me that had lots of cracks like your seats. I just wanted it to look ok for house sale photos and people looking round. After trying with coloured leather cream I ended up getting some cheap emulsion match pots and mixing up a matching shade and using that on the cracks before using feed to blend it in. At the end you wouldn't have known. Sounds bizarre but worked. I remember years ago one of my grandparents changing the colour of some of her shoes by buying leather shoe paint you could get in the 70's. Great work as always.

Vince My father was a journeyman painter. When painting wood keep your strokes going in 1 direction only and only with the grain of the wood when using anything but water paint. Oils and varnishes and lacquers and stains must all be applied going with the grain of the wood only. Always use low grit sand paper 1st and go from low to high when sanding wood. Also don’t forget to use a sealer after you have finished staining the wood so that moisture doesn’t get into the wood again. Now about the leather seats to clean leather get a leather cleaner and leather softener lotions and apply to the leather to clean it and add oils back to it. Leather is cow skin and over time it will dry out . I am a leathersmith and I have worked with leather. To keep leather supple and soft it has to be treated with leather oils every so meant years to keep it soft and smooth and supple. Now reguarding the stain on the drivers seat it looks like someone tried to stain it with brown stain and stopped when they put it on it. I don’t think you will ever get that out of the leather. That may be permanent? Hope this helps you. Alright governor.

You can still get a great finish with an oil based varnish, just takes a bit longer. An advantage is the colour, it really enhances the wood grain. RR probably just used the same clear lacquer they did the top coat on the paintwork with. Meths is fine to clean between coats, in fact it is advised. I would be using 240/320 grit between coats , you need to bring the high points down to an equal level, then get the finish coat. I would probably be thinning the varnish a little for the finish coats and trying to lay long coats with as little brush work as possible. Love the channel Vince, very helpful and just very entertaining.

@KingstownUkes Жыл бұрын
@@byteme9718 ok thanks, Im a furniture guy so not up on my car painting. The Rustins Plasticote Vince mentioned would of been a closer finish then? For the layman working in those conditions though, the varnish is probably the best approach, although Id of been tempted to use a 2K rattle can.
@byteme9718 Жыл бұрын
@@KingstownUkes Plasticote is internal uses only so wouldn't be suitable. The interior of car sees massive changes in temperature and humidity so that rules out many finishes. The product he's using can give good results but he's just making complete pigs ear of it. Not removing the wood is sheer lunacy and even more so when he's had it off previously so he knows it's not time consuming or difficult. He missed all the veneer defect repairs and the staining. While saying that the product he's using will work, it will take upwards of 20 coats with several sanding operations in between so perhaps 5 coats initially followed by sanding a good solvent wipe and then another five coats and so on. The original factory polyester was three coats followed by sanding and polishing. Building this coating takes time because it cures through a reaction with oxygen that begins at the surface and works its way through. If another coat is applied too soon it will attack the one below it and even if you get away with that too much thickness too quickly will slow the overall cure. With the number of coats required it's best to allow a day between each and then maybe three to five days before trying to sand. This is why the factory polyester was so good because the polyester application was all done within about fifteen minutes. Your suggestion of 2K is a good one and it gives great results but takes time and at least two sanding operations. The only way to sand is with the wood off the car so all the surface area can get equal attention. It's impossible to this, especially when the f*cking lock button surround is in site. The limitation with this products is that it's a clear so nothing like as stable as a heavily pigmented paint when building thickness. Even the factory polyester had a limited life as it too was prone to yellowing and cracking. Yacht varnish was never meant to be built to massively thick levels and as with most products you want the least you can get away with. More makes it prone to chipping and cracking ad of course the wood in a car moves with temperature and humidity. We used to apply one coat of polyester on the reverse side to provide a seal because when you don't the edges fail first. Rolls-Royce never bothered to do this so the first failure you see is around the instrument apertures when the coating starts to lift. I really hope Vince learns from this and admits to himself this is foolishness. The wood trim is a main feature of the interior and should be treated accordingly. He needs to remove it all, strip off what he's applied and start from scratch.
@KingstownUkes Жыл бұрын
@@byteme9718 I think you are being a little harsh, I'm not sure a concourse restoration was the point of this series of videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and I get how it can be frustrating watching. Vince did ask for help in the replies though. He can still get a great result if he carries on, I'm pretty sure all cars before the invention of polyester, late 60s maybe?, would of been an oil or spirit based varnish. If he does decide to start again, would the polyester route need a spray setup or can it be hand applied? A hard block sanding and a buff on a wheel or do you think a hand drill would be enough, that stuff is pretty hard. Could it be done on your Dads driveway? Genuine question mate as I'm interested myself. Have you ever tried the Konig repair kit for polyester, used to have to use it about 20 odd years ago to varying degrees of success.

Back when I did the only nut and bolt restoration on my burgundy Triumph Dolomite 1850HL, I did wax poetical on the woods as I felt the standard beech finish didn't quite work with the interior so I bought some walnut burr veneer and using a Reader's Digest big book on fixing stuff I veneered all the door cappings and the dashboard sections then sealed it in with some high quality yacht varnish I got from a chap who worked for a superyacht maker and I put about 20 coats with fine sanding in between each coat and them woods looked like they had been encapsulated in crystal glass. She was truly a beautiful car, I lovingly put about 200 deep wax coats on her flawless paint, I had the chromework done to a London chrome standard, Sprint alloys, vinyl roof with full webasto, not one part of that car was left untouched then my kid brother borrowed it, got a puncture on the Blackwall tunnel approach so without thinking he goes to the boot pulls out my 3 ton trolley jack, slaps it under car and lifts away, changes wheel and then drives off giving it back to me saying the tracking was out as it was weaving about a bit. So taking it down to me mates who put it on his lift, we hoisted the old girl up and he looked chagrined when he asked me to have a look for you see my brother just slapped the jack bang in the middle of the footwell ignoring the jacking point and in doing so ripped a quarter of the welds from the side of the car and mushroomed the footwell panel :( Was written off, it was like being mugged by a puppy and I never again did a top to tail restoration like that...

Vince polishing lacquered wood is the same concept as bringing metal to a mirror finish. Start at a low grit wet and dry sandpaper and work your way up then hit it with a polishing pad. As you work your way up the grits it will remove more and more scratches. Remember your not polishing the actual wood your polishing the lacquer. Just need to build up a nice thick coat if you want that polished original look.

The ultimate take away I've had from both your work on this Rolls and my own on a Bentley is that yes, it may not be the same as it looked from the factory, but does it look better than it did before you started working on it? Absolutely. And that's really all that matters. I recently used vinyl wrap to 're-chrome' an interior strip on my car that was long since past it. It's not the same as re-chroming the metal itself, but it looks way better than it did. Just don't look too closely! Excellent job on the wooden waistrail btw. Looks superb!

As not a good Finnish also you would have to sand all 4 caps to get the same colour for all the Capps. Sourcing Mole Sable is the problem as the one I have sourced is a Matt finish ( not gloss) so may have to go to Flying Spares ( Rolls/ Bentley spares)Re the correct product but think they will “have your trousers down on the price! So like you I have the dilemma as to the way forward, I also want to repair the caps in situ, as I understand they are difficult to remove ( door cards etc. ) so your U tube vid has been a useful “go too” to approach the problem, you certainly have taken on a big task restoring your Spirit, I am fortunate mine is immaculate for its age. Brilliant work Vince! I got a bit nervous with the sanding leather llol - but it came out pretty well so far! The wood bits - wow, it's looking fantastic!!!! Amazing work on the seat backs and cracks etc.

Thanks Chris, it doesn't look as good in person as it does through the camera, but I will keep at it. In hindsight I wish I never started the sanding as it was looking ok before that 😂 I Vince'd it good and proper!

The door wood trim ought to look similar to the dash. They must have darkened not only with age but the UV exposure. An alternative route could have been urethane (like paint clear coat). Talking about guitars, I had an opportunity to finish one up. The old, established way they do it there is use lacquer (Shellac chips in some thinner in the distant past) then layer them up, using some thinner on a cloth to "buff" it up when needed. Old school. You might have just gave me some more inspiration to play my own guitar, thank you!

Really enjoying the series, Vince. The car is really coming along. I have to say, though, that Yacht Varnish is the wrong stuff to use for the door caps. It's meant for exterior use and stays slightly tacky to resist the elements. The finishes used for guitar bodies would have been the way to go. Danish oil is fantastic stuff or a spray lacquer would also give a superb finish.

Vince you need to use heavy filler to fill the cracks, the seat may have had lots of filler already on base and then painted. But you fill and sand until its flat and smooth. Then airbrush the dye on top, about 2 to 3 coats. Mask up and do the piping. RR use a lacquer on the door caps.

You also need to use a Spirit based degreaser on the seats to remove the crap, a binder to bind loose fibers, then fill and sand, then spray the leather dye on. You can use a sponge but spray is nicer. If you do the whole car, take seats out and then no need to match the colour exactly. I love your shows and we have exactly same car. Yours a Spirit 1 and mine 2. Pretty much everything you have worked on mine has had same issues. You are my saviour.

Vince that drivers seat has had a seat repair. What your seeing is the repair underneath. The brown is because you have removed the cream dye 😢

The leather seats are coming out quite amazing especially considering they are 35 years old.

If you must use yacht varnish ( as opposed to lacquer), Le Tonkinois is the best. It’s not cheap but has a hard finish.

@43:36 - I once carried 20 pieces of 2x6x12 foot pressure-treated lumber in my wifes Lexus RX350. Not only do I know how to scuff up the back of a seat, I had to explain it to another human. Same vein - my ex-wife and I got a year old Honda Civic in 98. We took my young nephew to a railroad museum/tour/ride. We put him in the car seat to go home and he proceeded to put both feet on the upper part of the back seat (light grey cloth interior) and both of his shoes had tar pitch on them. Our first outing with the car and we had a permanent stain.

Hey Vince, back in the 80's they used to have those very fetching beaded massage seat covers. ...It's an option, no? 😜 Great work so far mate. 👍🇬🇧🙂

I would be so frustrated not to be able to access all the surfaces of the wood to proper clean, sand, paint and lacquer it. Definitely disassembling and working on a large clean table, away from the sun. Light sanding and cleaning between coats. Disassembly allows to buff it properly on a wheel to get that shine. Buffing takes out some coats, which is normal and why you apply many coats. And about this horrible plastic coating... Ox foot oil to feed leather.

Your french polisher is the man to listen to re finishing, im only amateur, but if you brush it on youre applying far too thick a coating in one go. You need to build it up in layers(hence the cost of this type of work) flour paper between coats. I apply each coat with a lint free cotton pad (old shirt etc) and wipe after sanding with white spirit not meths. Mop the final top coat to bring out the shine . Realistically you should have done these cappings on the bench not in the Royce but there you go. Youre not going for concourse finish.

If you do prefer the warm orange light temperature, there are much warmer LED lights available also. Not sure how easy it is to find in your specific sizes and connectors however.

The drivers' seat has had something spilled in it. I suspect something acidic like coffee or tea. That would definitely make the leather go hard. I would suggest using some saddle soap to bring it back as it works much better than some of the other leather care products. It's good for cleaning it too. I would dye it first though as it will adhere much better when it's dry. It soaks up more of the dye that way.
