@@ParisDorn159 Anyone is fine to have their opinion but I just disagree so much. Even things that I do like, it just ruins the inevitable happy surprise it would be. The 3D All stars leak made the actual product less exciting honestly. Smash character leaks literally ruin the surprise. Imagine if other games were leaked. Super Mario Odyssey info gets leaked before its release? Or how about Metroid Dread being leaked? The games are still awesome, but the excitement of their reveals is flattened because we now saw text in a youtube thumbnail telling us to expect it.

yeah since I get my main gaming news from twitter, I am glad that I am able to block words like "rumors" and "leaks" so it doesn't show up in my timeline. Doesn't help if it shows up on the trending page when something specific gets leaked, but muting words on twitter does help for the most part

The leaks that I hate are new game leaks. When Dread and Advanced Wars were shown, the feeling was amazing seeing something u did not anticipate. Warioware did not give me that feeling since Nintendo kinda leaked it.

I love seeing leaks of games that have already come out. Seeing cool little scraps of development history, while it's legally sketchy, is great for understanding games, game development and ultimately preserving the art form. The giga-leak showing off all that Yoshi's Island and Mario 64 content, among other games, was an absolute delight to go through, especially learning about Luigi oh my god. But then, leaking upcoming games, even when the information is bunk, just ruins the fun. I feel like leaks have ended up actively harming public perception on a lot of series, Pokémon and Smash especially come to mind where anonymous "trusted sources" dropped all of this almost perfect sounding information, only for none of it to be true and the respective fanbases completely imploded into in-fighting and toxicity. It encourages people to not temper their expectations and then the fallout from the inevitable disappointment is always horrendous.

Good leaks: Employees of Amazon releasing documents revealing that management knows that employees are forced to use bottles, plastic bags, and diapers to keep up with ridiculous productivity standards. Bad leaks: This videogame that is supposed to be revealed in two months exists. If we got more of the former in the gaming industry that'd be a good thing. The latter is mostly just, like, who even cares? I wouldn't even go so far as to call it bad if not for the fact that it can spoil the reveal for the developers actually working on the project.

I would definetly press the button. Leaks are spoilers but with a higher chance to be false/misinterpreted. It sets expectations way too high, which at one point was discussed to possibly be the reason for major Nintendo Directs to be dead. Now we do know it wasn't the case but I could have totally understand if it was true, because it is very unrespectful towards the people behind the games and also the people who want to be geniunely suprised which I count myself into. It's fun to theorize who the next Smash Char is, but I'd rather make use of "patterns" to explain why Bandana Waddle Dee could be the next Char than using rumors and leaks. The guy who leaked the Genshin Impact stuff for Inazuma got fined 500k. Unless the leaks are from the developers, leaks from others can cause stuff much undue stress and disappoint. The guy in charge of the music for the game asked people not to spread it because it was unfinished.

I think KZbin leak culture is growing particularly toxic. The need to beat the algorithm by having every title contain the words "huge, mega, insane leak etc", coupled with rumour/leak videos being posted on a daily basis just leads to disapointment. Who else remembers right before the switch was announced, we were all being told it would have Mario and Zelda at launch, and have GameCube and n64 virtual console. Then shocker when those didn't happen it caused a downer on the announcement. It's a twofold issue also because so much time is spent talking about what we should/will have next. That less time is spent on appreciating what we do have. I wish KZbin channels would focus more on game reviews and discussions about new/existing games. This causes a mindset of constantly feeling like the system isn't good enough.

I love speculation and seeing what 'insiders' whisper about. But I'd still hit the button. Ultimately leaks take away the surprise and generate an expectation which is often impossible to meet. Or worse: they generate toxicity against a product which hasn't even been revealed yet. People can still speculate and have fun guessing what's happening next without leaks.

I’d say leaks are fine for finished and cancelled games, but that’s it. Ongoing/unreleased projects? God no. It’s painful, especially as someone who gets a lot of genuine anxiety from spoilers. There’s a major difference from going into something blind vs not blind. One major thing with leaks is everything related to Genshin Impact. A massive majority of that community thinks leaks are okay, and will deliberately force them in your face wherever you go without concern for how you feel. It’s absolute hell trying to play that game and see anything related to it online. God I fucking hate people.

But even when a big corporation suffers a leak, that affects their marketing cycle, which affects sales, which affects every single person involved in the development. If a game doesn't sell as well as expected because leaks soured the marketing cycle, those people's job security is affected.

See, EA were like that during one E3. They showed off a concept from Criterion (that unfortunately never saw a return), and an early form of the new Mirror's Edge. I'm pretty sure there was something else as well. Point is, doing that did work. Both of those two were hype reveals even in their early stages. Yes, it is unfortunate that Criterion's concept was never allowed to be fully developed, but the fact we knew about it can inspire other developers to try their hand at it.

Regarding leaks, I don’t like the intense leaks that completely ruin reveals. If they’re minor or deserving such as the Mario + rabbids reveal then yeah sure. But an outright, game reveal with mechanics, a title, background story details etc isn’t good. Especially when it ruins the reveal, though developers should be more open about leaks, and could potentially use leaks as a way of showing fans what could be coming. I wouldn’t be surprised if some game leaks were made public by the developers to gain interest or spread the rumours around and hype around. Regarding behind the scenes stuff, like concept art, sketches, beta designs etc. Developers should be more open about them things and when developers are open about them things it gives consumers much more value, at example would be the zelda creating a champion book or the xenoblade special edition art books. Even if it’s something small, when I bought sonic mania plus it came with a small 32 page Art Book, a small book in comparison to the other art books. Also, why should art books by solely special edition items. With so many people complaining about values of games, take Metroid dread as an example, people aren’t happy that they have to pay full a triple-A price for a 2D game. (I personally couldn’t care less, I preordered the collectors edition). A way to improve a games value would be to include all the behind the scenes and developer notes as part of the completion rewards. It would be a great reward for fans who have played and completed everything the game has to offer.

All these leaks have taught me to be skeptical about every supposed leak and it won’t lead to a huge disappointment or lack of enthusiasm, depending on if the leak is fake or real.

I dunno, if the only interesting thing an announcement have is the fact that I didn't knew about it beforehand, then maybe it wasn't that good of an announcement to begin with. In the end, I think the uncontrollable hype generated by the industry is way worse. That and I'm not shedding a tear for a company that can't keep their information inside.

It's frustrating because I think most people who make or follow video game news basically agree that leaks are shitty and they hurt the industry. But it's kind of a vicious cycle because it seems like traffic spikes whenever a KZbinr or some site reports on it. So of course they're going to talk about it because their audience clearly wants to hear about leaks. It's one of those things where everyone involved is at least a little guilty, even the audience. The people clicking on articles and videos are driving up the demand for leaks so of course leakers are going to continue existing. And to be fair, I do see WHY leakers do this. It's a way to get clout and build an audience. It's really not THAT different from what any news source does, it's just a higher risk/higher reward proposition, especially when your sources aren't 100% reliable or the information is bad somehow. And ultimately it just hurts everyone's credibility. Look at how Switch Pro leaks have infuriated everyone, to the point that leakers like Nate the Hate had to issue official apologies and explanations. And most journalists are essentially forced to talk about it while rolling their eyes at the whole situation. It would be great if we could all just agree to not talk about leaks and not click on videos and articles with "leaks" in the title until it all goes away.

There are 3 things Nintendo hates: 1. Unofficial emulations of their games. 2. Unlicensed mods of their intellectual properties. 3. Leaks. Case in point on 3, they had a Netflix live-action Legend of Zelda series in the works several years ago, and when somebody leaked it out to the public before they even started filming, Nintendo pulled the plug on the project out of spite for the leaker.

Leaks about past/cancelled products are fine, but leaks about new games are more damaging then anything. Customers either end up pissed because the final product doesn't live up to their fantasy game, or ambivalent and then bitch about how the reveal wasn't exciting enough for them. The company that made the game must now handle any backlash that they received, and it just adds more stress to the whole game making process. I still remember what the head developer said about the Mario+Rabbids leak. He mentioned how the motivation of the team pretty much got shot because everyone was clowning on the leak. He was so excited about the concept and idea when he pitched it to Nintendo, and only for the customers to shoot him down. It ended up well long term, but this is the kind of stuff that can really mess up video games

On the other hand, someone leaked journalist-only gameplay footage for Sonic Frontiers that has saved its collapsing reputation overnight. Other leaks can revolve around poor practices or treatment of employees, though those are a slightly different topic. I feel like leaks can be helpful in a situation where a company is being incompetent or detrimentally tight-lipped (such as a situation where _any_ news could save a game's relevance in the public eye, but none is ever given for months or years, leading to the official reveal being brushed aside by a lack of any hype or relevance). I wouldn't ever put a blanket over the topic and call it globally a bad thing.

I think leaks are fine. I think rumors are fine. People confusing rumors as leaks is what’s damaging, and it happens WAY too often on the content creators part. Rumors and leaks should not be synonymous. They are completely different.

Well, the word “leak” gets more attention since it implies credibility, so content creators are gonna go for that word. And they justify it by saying “oh yeah this leaker has a great track record.” leakers only have a good reputations because NOBODY calls them out when their leaks turn out to be false!

I think the problem is too many people take cash settlement agreements with Nintendo instead of fighting them in court. As it is nearly impossible to prove lose of income due to a leak.
