I remember watching the show with military buddies...I was in the Marine Corps at that time, stationed near LA...and I shared two bedrooms with 3 other guys. All of them, white. It was a large space, with a big screen tv in the lounge area, between our two living quarters. I say they were white, because as we watched the ENTIRE show from start to finish, NONE OF THEM really had anything to say, besides "oh, yea..I know that song!". And all of them wanted any and everything Sheena Easton was givin'. Lo and behold, when the gospel segment started, I was a little surprised at the way they responded to black gospel. But when Karen Clark, started down them stairs, singing like something from outer space, I look up and ALL OF THOSE WHITE DUDES were clapping and jumping up and down, almost laughing at how RIDICULOUS her voice was. I will NEVER forget that moment. So, before it was said and done, all of us were 'gettin our shout on' in that big room. ALL OF US. On the first couple of rows, you can see Whitney, behind her was Barry White and his wife, and then behind them was Ashford & Simpson and then across the aisle from them was the Force MDs...the whole show, none of them showed any sort of emotion. But when Karen lit it up, ALL OF THEM were smiling and responding like they were in church. I know that Whitney, Ashford & Simpson and the late, great Barry White, were from the black church. So that explains how much they understood what they were witnessing. Karen, pretty much shut it all down and damn near turned out the lights...because after all that, wasnt nuthin' left to do, but go home.

My goodness, the way Karen hit that high F#5 a😢 the beginning. Placement was spot on! And then went even further and hit the high A5 on carry with the descending riff. God, her inner ear is impeccable. Well, at least the key sounds like D-major to me. True soprano. I love how bright and piercing the timbre of her voice is. Even her squalls and growls in that high key are spot on. Phenomenal.

I was a kid when this aired but I swear i remember it like it was yesterday. I wish it didn't cut off when it did cause the best part was how they just kept singing even after they left the auditorium. Ahmad Rashad (who was the host that year) tried to read the teleprompter and move on to the next award but you could still hear them singing from outside... the audience was goin crazy... he just stood there like 'i can't compete with that' so he just stopped talking and let them finish... it was such a epic moment of TV!
