Hello doctor. I am so glad I found you and your videos. I had an ischemic stroke in my basal ganglia 2 years ago at the age of 42. I am left side affected. I am watching your videos to learn more to help me progress and do different exercises. I feel so close to walking 'normal' yet feel so far. My left arm and fingers are moving but I am still so weak. I move my arm leading with my shoulder. And have to left or reach with Assistance of my right arm. I used to be able to grab and hold better then had botox and feel I have regressed. Should I see a neuro therapist so they can really listen to me and give me a focused program. I don't know which videos to start with.

I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! I HAD A STROKE FEB, 2012! I've recovered 95% or so, and i thankful BUT i have spent years and hours working this exact Subject!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my left side was effected and foot curls in ward, my toes are shredded from the floor, I've ordered very expensive shoes trying to correct my gate - NOTHING HAS HELPED, for kicks i searched leaning to one side after stroke and found this! LISTENING TO YOU AND WATCHING FROM WORK, I CANNOT WAIT TO HOME ANS START THESE MOVEMENTS, *VERY EXCITED* THEY'RE GOING TO WORK! I CAN FEEL IT!!!! i had months of PT right after my stroke, but didn't give it 110%(shame on me) and now i've spent years paying for the pain and no confidence -THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!

Very good explanation, I noticed that I walk relatively well until the hip lifter fatigue, after that the hip starts to deteriorate and as a reaction the abnormal synergism of the extensor starts and increases and the gait becomes harder and more irregular. Thanks for the good advice.

🌸💛🌸 Thank you Dr. Tara for this super video again. Yes the leaning to the healthy side is an issue, for me as I tend to search for security on that side. I practice straight posture with - your standing exercise, then slow motion walking 5 steps forward, 5 steps backward, repeat - before a mirror and with lots of furniture around. In the beginning this was wobbly and dangerous. In the meantime, after a year, it's safe and improves from month to month. Sending lots of greetings to Orlando 🌸💛🌸

@@rehabhqofficial Thank you for your kind words. Yes there is so much recovery possible. It is daily practice with changing topics... being late 50ies and coming from half dead, today to walking exercises and arm improvements... there is more in it than I and the doctors expected. My routine is to never stop one day. Everything in the household is a chance for practice. And your videos gave me so much impulse, trust and knowledge. I'm not saying that getting mad is the key to it but it's the beginning psychology to say f*** this I'm going to get better attitude and then you realize that you need Jesus Christ in your life2 have the belief that he is your savior and will give you the right mind to be able to come back with help of a great doctor like you.

Hi Dr. Tara... I have a related question. Do Stroke patients get tingling/numb arms from a stroke ? I had a stroke 2 1/2 years ago and my left arm is still about 60% numb...it feels exactly how your arm feels after you have hit your "Funny Bone" real hard...that electric shock kind of numb. Personally, I always thought the numbness was from the nurse who inserted the IV needle into my upper left wrist and my whole hand started going numb immediately from there....after 2 days of that I threatened to remove the IV myself if they didn't do it for me (after my complaining constantly for the 2 days) ...... I Love your dedication ! Liked/Subscribed years ago !

Swinging my arms gives me stability while i'm walking , but im not sure if im doing it correctly as i have shoulder pain and neck pain (on the right side), It would be of great help if you can make a video on "WALKING" (how to use the limbs correctly). This is so extremely close to what is happening with me!! Where I am different is that my involved leg, the knee down, collapses towards the center and instead of a supinate, my foot turns inward so my push off is only my big toe and interior of my heel. I can’t seem to figure out how to strengthen my four other toes and the outside ankle. My affected side is my right leg and arm

I am definitely guilty of rotating my body to the involved side. As a result I am a side-walker! After many years of doing this sub-consciously (to the point that the rotated torso feels normal), I am now aware and trying to keep my torso neutral positionally when I walk. To get closer to neutral I am trying to rotate toward my uninvolved side to get back to neutral. I will incorporate the exercises you demo in both this video and part 2. Apart from using a mirror any other tips or best practices to ensure belly-button is pointing forward when walking in real life situations? Excellent videos, thanks so much!

This is an excellent question! Generally speaking, when I am working with someone who is having a hard time "squaring" their shoulders and hips, (and they are. trying to practice at home alone between therapy sessions), a mirror works really well. There are other things I do with my patients but they are no safe for everyone so I have to make that decision on a case by case basis. But it sounds like you are on the right track with the mirror!
