its funny how people take this literal. The song is about him breaking the heart of a 'good' girl. He is just saying he wants to remember her innocence before laying waste to her with his demons

Jerry always gets the short end of the stick in all these reactions, Layne was one of the best singers ever but Jerry is AIC, one of the best songwriters ever and even tho Layne is gone the band still kicks ass, Sean is a fantastic drummer and mike a fantastic bassist. Everyone still wishes Layne was around but as long as Jerry and the other 2 boys are around they with rock.

Love Hate Love live at the Moore December 22, 1990, is LAYNE STALEY in his prime and UNTOUCHABLE PERFECTION. All other bands should strive to have a live performance this perfect. Layne is better live than studio version. One of the very few singers who are better live. Layne wrote the song about his tumultuous relationship with Demri Parrott (pronounced Per-roh). There was cheating on both sides. Listen to the song from the mindset of a sociopath. How many times did Layne come back home from being on tour to find another guy just so smitten-puppy love-tattoo-you-on-my-chest in love with Demri at first sight. But the Demri fans think Layne should have lain down and taken that because he deserved it for screwing groupies on the road? There a few stories of her on the road with him where the first thing she thought of was scoring junk before anything else. I've come to the conclusion that apparently to Demri fans the Layne/Demri relationship is a sacred, hollowed relationship and NO ONE is allowed to side with him against her for what she did to him with the drugs and cheating on him, but he was lower than a snake for what he did to her with the drugs and cheating on her. She was so independent, she DID NOT even want to be recognized as his girlfriend (God-forbid that ever happen). Even though the second he told her he wouldn't get her any more drugs, she just turned around and shacked up with the next guy who would do what she wanted. Her family called Layne back home from GERMANY where he was on tour for a damn intervention with her. Layne never thought interventions worked, but he did it for her. There was one instance where Layne sent her out for coke or something, and she came back with heroin. Hell, it wasn't like Demri was headed for a life in a convent when she met Layne and on the day she was to take her holy orders, Layne corrupted her. She already knew how to get drugs when they met. Layne could have wished upon a star a million times over that she would have married him, but she wasn't going to give up the drugs any more than Layne would have, so there was no way in hell she was marrying him. She had such a feminist independent streak. When they were making the Sea of Sorrow video, the girlfriends were all invited down to participate in the video. Every girlfriend showed up EXCEPT Demri. She didn't even show up to support him let alone be in the video. Discussing the title track "Dirt", Cantrell stated that "the words Layne put to it were so heavy, I've never given him something and not thought it was gonna be the most bad-assed thing I was going to hear." Staley said he wrote the song "to a certain person (Demri) who basically buried my ass". In an interview with the Canadian magazine M.E.A.T. in December 1992, Layne Staley said about the cover: "This album cover... I like to refer to it as "revenge". The woman on the album cover is kinda the portrayal of that person being sucked down into the dirt (laughs), instead of me. The picture is the spitting image of her, and that wasn't even planned. Actually, I was pretty angry about it when I first saw it - she's not happy about it either (laughs). It was real eerie. The girl on the album cover is really Mariah O'Brien NOT Demri. She had two heart surgeries that Layne paid for and two lung surgeries (that Layne also paid for) all stemming from endocarditis that she contracted through intravenous drug use. She passed away on October 28, 1996, from a bacterial infection that was a complication from the last overdose she had. Even though they had broken up for good by 1994, he still loved her and she was still hanging around in 1995 and 1996 before she hooked up with someone else a few months before her death. Demri’s death devastated Layne. A few months later, Layne asked her mother for the teddy bear Demri had with her in the hospital and a few other things. It took another few weeks and an accidental meeting on a busy street to exchange the items. The consensus was that Layne never got over Demri’s death. He used her death as the catalyst to go into a drug-induced tailspin in which he would take his addiction to lengths few could imagine or sustain. (This is coming from a Layne fan who was NEVER a fan of Demri and the many times she strung him along)

Yeah, when I think of grunge I think of Alice In Chains as well. That deep grungy/gritty guitar sound and mournful gritty vocals. Lots of emotion. It's part of why I really like Bad Water by Jinjer. It has that grungy/bluesy sound as well (all clean vocals). You should react to that one. It's a great song. Of all of the Grunge era bands, Layne's voice gets to my soul the most. Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder are arguably better singers all around, but Layne's voice just...cuts thru. So full of pain and remorse that it's sometimes hard to listen to some of his songs without tearing up (such as Wake Up by Mad Season.) It's been even more deep once he passed. So many singers from the 90s-2000s are gone, that of the most popular bands only Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam is left. Gone are: Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone, Shannon Hoon from Blind Melon, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Layne Staley of Alice In Chains and Mad Season, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, and Audioslave, and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Stone Temple Pilots, and Grey Daze. I know there are others, but just so much talent lost in that list. ~Be Blessed

Face Lift and Dirt are two albums that you can just put on start to finish and not skip any tracks. It's incredible how it's like they're a pair with Dirt being a sequel. They accomplished this effect better than most movie sequels! It's like the tracks were all recorded at the same time. Great band, loved 'em when my buddy introduced me to 'em and still do today. If I missed seeing it anywhere in your videos that you've already done, sorry. If not: I'd like to suggest a song by Type O negative. Shared the same era as AIC however they're more... metal-ish. But, they're "Gothic Metal". Sorry, I'm not a patron or anything since I just found yous guy's channel. But, check it out if you like something unique. "Wolf Moon" is the song. Todays music is pathetic. Listen to this masterpiece. No computer shit. No elementary school lyrics. Gifted, talented musicians who worked day and night to master their craft. Its not 1 dork sitting at his laptop making loops with drum machines and adding layers of samples, and then shopping it around until some non-talented dip shit buys it and then he shops it around to some production group who needs 11 people to write a chorus that girls can shake their ass to after a few drinks. That's todays music. Has been for the last 15 years. Besides my disgust of todays society, you two ladies have some good reaction videos. =)

They had 2 singers Layne and Jerry but Layne was the lead singer on the large majority of the material. Jerry did leads on songs like brother/don’t follow/no excuses/grind/over now/heaven beside you etc, all songs he also wrote. So while Layne was definitely the main lead singer Jerry also did leads on some of their biggest songs. Couple other songs are kinda split 50/50 and then the others are Layne doing leads with Jerry harmonizing with him and doing backing vocals. Jerry has been the lead singer on their last 3 albums tho obviously because Layne is no longer around, band still kicks ass too.

This is the most misinterpreted songs out there. Everyone thinks about an evil girl but it actually about him corrupting a pure and good girl. If you read the lyrics with that interpretation it makes sense. Ge wants to peel the skin from her face to remember her innocence before he corrupts ger hence “i want to peel the skin from your face before the real you is laid to waste. “Sweet little angel you should have run” abd several other clues tell you this is a pure innocent person falling for him and he will corrupt her

The general audiences sure but Jerry and the boys still around writing great lyrics like this and playing great shows. If they came out these days as a band tho they would never be nearly as big as they were in the 90s which is a shame, Jerry and layne forsure wrote some goddamn great lyrics tho.

Alice in chains was their own genre because even though there were grunge they had metal added into it thats were different that's what made them. And there is nobody that has a voice like layne or nor will they be many of the great singers have tried to do his songs and they can't do it

Looking forward to the harmonies. Sorry no harmonies here. At this point layne was clearly the lead singer and Jerry sang backup.

Ok, live singing is tough. Layne did so well for being on drugs. I could sort of sing Alice songs live with hours of rehersal and no substances.

There is a better performance of this on YT. Also the show they did at Weedsport NY is amazing start to finish
