Layne was in another band called Madseason. They had one album together. At this same show here Temple of the Dog performed too. Soundgarden there is a lot from that time. Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, TAD most all of those came from Seattle. There is also a track on Alice in Chains EP SAP called Right Turn that has Lanye and Jerry from AIC as well as Chris Cornell and Mark Arm on it. Mark Arm is the singer from Mudhoney and Chris Cornell from Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, and Audioslave

There's no acting in Grunge. That's what made it special. It came from the heart and soul. There's no acting the torment those guys faced. Also, that interesting style you reference Layne is very famous for. He bends his vowels and either morphs them into another vowel, or into a consonant. That's why you heard "I tried to love you, I thought I coul-rrd." That's just his own style. Many tried to imitate him, none succeeded.

I grew up in Belgium and, being born in 1977, I was the target audience for everything in the 90s. Alice in Chains were pretty big in Europe, but Nirvana and Pearl Jam were a bit more radio-friendly, so they were definitely more popular. It does make me very happy to see the younger generation discover this band and be completely mesmerised by them. They truly were something special, which is why they are still my favourite band of all time, mostly the Layne Staley era. I would highly recommend Would? and Them Bones from the Dirt album, if you don't mind reacting to studio version / official videos.

He was 23 here. This song was about his girlfriend/fiance Demri. He did have drug issues but things hadn't started to get bad with that yet. He was still pretty strong. In around 6 years time he had gone from this to a place where he knew drugs were going to kill him and his health was fading but he was still fighting it. Then Demri died from drug related heart complications and even though they had split up by then it hit him hard and not long after that he went into hiding and his body waisted away over the next 6 years until there was not much left of him, he weighed 84 pounds or something at the time of his death and was rarely seen by anyone. It's a sad story

He was a severe heroin addict. At different levels, off and on, throughout his career. Which is how he eventually died in 2002, from a combination of cocaine and heroin overdose. Which are two of the deadliest drugs to combine. As bad as he got in the years after this performance, he was wasting away physically, but he usually could still pull off some of the greatest vocals ever. Much better vocals than any of us can ever dream of doing. RIP Layne. We miss you.

👍 can confirm they (AIC) are in fact, a great band. All technically proficient musicians, but it's truly due to Jerry Cantrell that Alice is (imo) the best of Seattle bands. He took his songwriting cues from musicians like Elton John and Willie Nelson, and his playing from Iommi, Young, and Gibbons. He's an exceptionally talented songwriter and a riff lord. They don't have a bad album in their catalog, and while Nevermind by Nirvana is without question the most popular grunge album, Dirt is the best.

I don't know if the singer from Muse sounds like Layne Staley or not, but if he does, he probably got it from Layne. Many singers in the 90s and beyond were influenced by Layne but no one every reached his level. I looked it up and Muse started around 1994 and Alice In Chains with Layne as the singer was slowing down by that point. You mentioned in either this video or your Man In The Box video that you like some Slipknot and Metallica. Corey Taylor said this: "It has to be Alice In Chains. Alice In Chains, to me, is one of the greatest rock bands that ever was. And I don't just mean that from a grunge standpoint or metal or anything like that. They revolutionized so much musically and they inspired me to change the way I write music. I mean, full stop, period, the end of sentence. "Layne Staley is still one of the greatest fucking singers that ever lived. Now, that is not a reflection of the demons that he had to fight, obviously, and that's everything to do with his talent. He just made it look so fucking easy, and he could sing anything, he could write anything, and the shit that he was writing about was killing him, and yet we loved it. To me, that was the greatest baring of the soul that I ever listened to. And if you need any more proof of that, all you need to do is listen to 'Nutshell'. It's one of the greatest songs ever written. And that's not even my favorite Alice In Chains song. "My favorite Alice In Chains song is 'Would?' Full stop. That song is fucking incredible. But 'Nutshell' is such an outpouring of trying to share with you the darkness that's in his heart. And even though you're hearing it, it's so light, you're just, like, 'Fuck. Where is he?' And we never knew." And Metallica loved Alice In Chains. Some of those guys were pissed off that Alice canceled opening a tour for them (for obvious health reasons) and acted like assholes about it, there's video of it. James Hetfield sang "Would?" at least a couple times and Lars Ulrich and his ex-wife named one of their sons Layne. When were you born? I was born in 1981 and Alice In Chains was my first favorite band. They were very popular and well known from the release of Facelift until the mid 1990s. All their albums with Layne are Platinum. Their EP Jar of Flies was the first EP to debut at #1 on the Billboard chart. I think for people younger than me would not know all this.
