Helaas Pindakaas: Aldi has a brand of peanutbutter called "Helaes" just because of this expression. So you can literally buy Helaes pindakaas.

Veel van deze expressies maken degene tegen wie het wordt gezegd monddood. Het kapt de ander af in het klagen over iets dat fout ging, potentieel tot hun verdriet (dat nog niet wordt geuit). Dan is de vertaling "Niet zeuren. Even je tanden op elkaar. Ieder huisje heeft z'n kruisje." Amsterdam was vroeger de hoofdstad van het "kankeren" (op doordringende wijze klagen). En dan had je dit soort afkappende reacties nodig in je repertoire - anders kon het lang doorgaan.

“Je borst natmaken” is to prepare for a challenge ahead. It (most likely) originates from a very Dutch activity: swimming. To prepare for the cold water, people were advised to “wet their chest” to acclimatise a bit. Their are multiple references in literature, dating back to the early 1800s.

Yes, was also going to comment that the helaas pindakaas saying is not just saying it is too bad. It also contains a small teasing undertone. As in that the person who says this might not mind it as much as the other. Or it can be criticizing the other person for complaining about something.

Careful with using "Weet ik veel". You aren't just saying " I don't know". What You are actually saying is " I don't know, why on earth are You asking me this question?" It's an irritated response. I don't know = "Ik heb geen idee/Dat weet ik niet." is the polite way.

This is very funny. I have native english speaking co-workers. That's how I found out how many expressions we have in dutch. Like " ja lekker.. de pot verwijt de ketel hiero", "..die heeft nu een week dus vrij want die heeft vorige week zijn boterbriefje gehaald", "poeh, we hebben best veel uitgegeven op vakantie. Dat wordt even een paar weekjes de tering naar de nering zetten", "nou, daar zijn we dan mooi mee in de aap gelogeerd. En nou zitten wij dus met de gebakken peren. Maar als we alle zeilen bijzetten dan gaan we het redden, zeker als we een beetje wind in de zeilen hebben. Maar dan moeten we wel zorgen dan we niet teveel last hebben van die beste stuurlui die aan wal staan". And I can go on for hours. We had much fun trying to explain those to our co-workers.

The expression ‘helaas, pindakaas’ is a relative young expression. On ensie,nl I found that It was probably Paul de Leeuw that made it popular in 1987. But it was used locally earlier. I remember that it became in use. And that coach using the expression was funny, because it more youth language at that time.

I'd recommend looking into the 1559 painting from Pieter Breugel... It portrays a hundred Dutch/Flemish proverbs of which many are still in use...its a phenomenal look into our combined culture.

Een voor mij onbekend kanaal, maar altijd leuk om gezegdes en spreekwoorden vertaald te zien worden. In Belgian Dutch ("Flemish"), we use almost all of them as frequent, but witch some exception. The first one we only use if we imitate a Dutch person, the second one is completely unknown, 5 does sound a bit Dutchy, but is used too, I don't hear 18 either.

The stories were accompanied by illustrations by Fiep Westendorp, which were simple black and white drawings. De laatste loodjes, clearly stems from our maritime hey day. Ships had to ballasted out and trimmed for balance with heavy weight. The last of these weights usually were put in a place where they were needed for optimal trimming. That was always done last, when all the cargo was put in. Mostly this entailed putting a part of said cargo aside (so getting the straps of and pulling it aside) putting the led weights in, then puting the cargo back and strapping it up. Hopefully getting it right in one. If not... Hence, the last leds, weigh the heaviest. They gave the most bother.

Nice. Most of the expressions are used so common I hardly realize that they are expressions. En verder allemaal één pot nat: Ben je van de pot gerukt, ben je van de ratten besnuffeld of heb je een klap van de molenwiek gehad. Dat betekent niet dat je niet op je achterhoofd bent gevallen in tegendeel. Of misschien wel mijn meest favoriete twee: "onder welke steen heb jij gelegen? of Jij bent sinds de oorlog zeker niet meer buiten geweest?! Overigens een variant die ik in Brabant nog vaak tegen kom op mosterd na de maaltijd: eieren na Pasen.

Nog een goeie die er wel wat van weg heeft is: "Met je kont van achteren komen". ; Jij komt altijd als het werk al gedaan is.

Let me rephrase: The English phrase: "It's all downhill from here." looks a lot like the Dutch phrase: "Het gaat bergafwaarts." (It is going down the mountain) In English the goal is an easy (bike) ride, while in Dutch the goal is the top of the mountain.

In have a new one you might not know, a variance to het slaat nergens op/ it makes no sense. My one is “ het slaat als een tang op een varken. It hits like a plier on a pig. But the origin of this saying is fun to look up, it doesn’t originate of hitting but more in the sense that the two items do not combine, you cannot fit a plier on pig. It doesn’t make sense to do that.

I'd translate aan de hand more like "matter": "wat is er aan de hand?"- what's the matter? It depends on context. Going on is not wrong but matter may be more to the point
