Wow! As a former waaaaaay amateur flute & piccolo player, this was delightful. Yes: the flute offers a hovering sheen to the orchestra in a way only the violins can also do, which is why the two are so complementary. Also, the flute feels often like the soprano voice. Great interview!

Nope! No curved headjoint, plus that would be the standard position in orchestra for the *alto* flute, in G.

BlueJay I thought the alto flute had a curved headjoint and that the headjoint of a bass flute is straight just like that of a concert flute.

Alto flutes have the option of a straight or curved (that one happened to be straight). Bass flutes are *exclusively* curved headjoints (you wouldn't be able to play one otherwise)
