this video is a guide with some of the most basic commands used to navigate in MS DOS, rename files and other actions used.
it is not a very complete and advanced video but should be good to use for beginners that want to get going with this operating system.
use this video as a guide and not as a definite way to use it, some options used in DOS may not come with a warning and files and even drives may be permanently deleted using fdisk, Del, or format so make things with care and check things twice when in doubt,
ventilate your thoughts in the comment section and discuss things maybe not mentioned in this video.
music used in this video is made by me AKA Powertoast Music
and you may find all my released tracks on my separate channel:

Hi, I have a Mac Mini late 2012 running bootcamp and when I try to change drive it says: The system cannot find the drive specified. I try e: d: nothing works. Any suggestions?

Nickyux3003 hi! It is likely that your target hard drive is not formatted with Fat, Fat16 or 32 and then dos won’t be able to see the drive. Usually is the drive you have if only one C: It is possible to run the command “fdisk” and check if the drive is mounted and seen properly and you can show what type of partitions it has or delete and make a new that works with dos. Have in mind that messing around with partitions may permanently delete all data on the drive. If you don’t have any important data on the drive and want to delete it and try dos you can use the numbers to navigate and delete existing partitions and then make a new primary one. Restart the computer with the boot media and run the command: Format C: and then press yes or proceed on all errors you gonna see and let it format. Then you should be able to access it normally

But how do I list all the drives?

If you have drives with active partitions you can’t really list them all at a time so you need to enter drive letters eg: c:/ D:/ E:/ etc and hit enter. If you reach a drive letter you don’t have you will get a message for that. You can also run the command FDISK in which you can manage partitions on your drives. Create new or view what different drives and partitions you have in your computer. It is a pretty simple tool and you use the numbers to chose what you wanna do or check but have in mind this program can also erase all data on your drive if you remove a partition or change it. If you have a new empty drive you want to activate in your computer you run Fdisk first create a partition then find the allocated drive letter for it and use the command format to create the file system and make the drive ready for data

@@Pulverrostmannen what I tried was going to the drives in alphabetical order C:\ D:\ E:\ etc.. But I did not find the drive I was looking for. I created a FreeDos USB from which I wanted to navigate into the system drive (C:\ in windows). And I tried the fdisk command but it didn't work. C:\ is the root directory of dos when I boot into it (USB). But the original disk is an IDE. So that's why I'm confused.

Alyctro what kind of system is it you work on? Newer windows with ntfs file system or older computer running et win98? Dos is not compatible with anything else than fat file system. It can also need additional drivers for scsi controllers or the likes and usb does not work for this.

@@Pulverrostmannen I'll tell you the whole story, to exclude any misconceptions. I worked at a repair shop, and they let me have one old computer that I liked. So I started working on it. Since I couldn't find a compatible keyboard, I took out most of the components and kept the case. It's really old, since it had a CD only drive with an audio jack, and a 2,5 diskette drive. At home I brought some modern components and put it all together. Basically, I ditched the diskette and CD drive so I could connect two harddrives in parallel master and slave configuration. Both are IDE drives, and I didn't check what sort of formating they used. The case also had an old speaker built in, so I salvaged that and it works with the new motherboard. In any case, I didn't like that the emulators only emulated the speaker sound. So I downloaded the FreeDos onto a USB drive (which yes, is locked to the fat format), it boots up successfully, but cannot see my drive where windows 7 was installed (drive 1). It can only see the salvaged drive, which had still the previous owners stuff on it from 2003. So it must've used some very old formating method. The system has a dual core Intel Pentium 3.50ghz i believe and a 1gb stick of ram. The system behaved very very slowly at certain tasks even if the games ran just fine at high settings which is weird. And I'm using the APU mode, because I'm lacking a gpu at the moment which is on the way. What I ended up doing was that I placed the necessary dos games onto the USB drive it self (system root) and could navigate to them with ease. So, logically assuming. I think since I tried installing Windows 7 onto (drive 1),the formating was converted to suit the newer system. Thus dos cannot see it. From the looks of the remaining files, at some point I must've used that drive as a backup unit for games and stuff. There was strangely an unfinished windows xp installation (which I can't get rid of so I have to manually select windows 7 on boot, otherwise it would default to the xp installation and crash because of the formating. But then, did xp even run on FAT?

Alyctro I think what happens here is because the drive you have win7 has the NTFS file system. Fat was pretty much gone from Windows NT and up and XP or Vista all ran with the newer file system as a standard. Since you have a dual core it’s not really that super old computer but sure it probably done by modern terms but way beyond the real relics I am still using here which is intel pentium. Or P3 etc which was made for these old operating systems. If you want your computer to be able to run Windows7 and still have access to drives in dos mode you could split your hard drive in different partitions and format the additional ones with Fat32 and use the system drive with NTFS and it gonna work half way there. Another way you can easily run your dos games with directly in win7 can also be done downloading and using the program Dosbox. It is a virtual Dos program which is making it possible to play these old games on a modern computer to some extent without any other special equipment. It also uses the same commands as dos more or less and you won’t have the demand for a Fat formatted drive to use it. I actually have one computer here that is a P4 that I have dual os for. But instead of using the same drive for everything I have a drive bay that I just swap the drives with depending what I wanna do. I have one drive for old stuff. And one drive with XP for it. I just pick the drive for the task and slide it in the dock and boot right away without anything else need to be changed

It stands for MicroSoft Disk Operating System and it was after Microsoft bought the rights for QDos it got this name, before this era Dos was used in many computers under the name Qdos and Dos-86 and it had to be used with commands to run the programs pretty much the same way as shown in this video here. after it became MS-Dos windows 3 and up to 98 and ME was built upon this and had Dos in the bottom which could be used to run older programs directly from the command prompt if so desired before windows was actually started. Today DOS are no longer included in any windows but you still have the command prompt CMD that looks the same and can be used to make various command based tasks the same way DOS has to control windows and more such as disk scanning, repair system files and other useful things directly from CMD
