For everyone saying "Pele O!" doesn't mean "Hello", it's because you don't speak proper Yoruba. (E) nle o, which is a morphology of (E) Pele o, is a way of saying hello. Pele is also used to say "Sorry" but not in the same context as "forgive me", but in the context of "I'm sorry that's happened to you". Say your kid bumps his toe on a stone and starts to cry, you say "Pele".

What i find very difficult is that i don't know how to shape my lips or position my tongue in order to pronounce some of the words correctly. For eg. "pupo" sounds like "bobo" to me but i know that isn't quite right if i say it that way. I suppose some things need an in person tutor to explain and show how.
@jonralph88433 жыл бұрын
The two most difficult letters for Yoruba learners are the /p/ sound which is totally different from the English p and the /gb/ sound which doesn't exist in English and most languages. The /p/ sound is pronounced with both lips AND the tongue against the upper palate of the mouth. It sounds like a /kp/ instead of the regular p. If you have Yoruba friends, they may be able to show you how. I hope this was helpful a little.

Pele can also be used as greetings. It’s mostly used by elders to the young. May be if they add the E pronoun, you will understand. Since E is necessary when a young person say it to older people out of respect. “E pele ma” E pele sir” is how the phrase is usually used.

@@oluwadamilola6233 "E Nle o" is a morphology of "E Pele o"., so it's a perfect interpretation of "hello". English and Yoruba are from different language families so words wont match 100%. "Pele O" has many uses and "hello" is one of them.
