This lesson is where I noticed a steady transition in pronouncing Portuguese. Your learning repetitions are most effective when I pause the video to form the sentence before the answer appears. Great stuff!

@DecodingWordswithAndrew4 ай бұрын
@@James_Aspey not yet...I'm going to go up to lesson 10 in this series (3 more videos to go). People have already expressed interest in going beyond that, so I may end up building a course which keeps it going. But it will ultimately come down to if the demand is high enough for me to justify spending the time making it.

Hi, really good lessons thanks. I was wondering what it would mean if you replaced 'esse livro' with 'este livro'?
@DecodingWordswithAndrew4 ай бұрын
Glad you liked it Susan! It would mean the same thing, but "este" would sound more formal. "este" is used much more in formal, written contexts, while "esse" is what you'll hear used in everyday speech. If you learn Portuguese from a textbook/app, they'll often just teach you that "this book" is "este livro" without mention that in the real spoken language, people will say "esse livro". Hope that helps!

This may seem like a pedantic point so I apologise in advance. In your example of eu acabei de comprar esse livro You say esse means this. My understanding is that este is this and esse is that when referring to masculine nouns. Is this a case of where the spoken informal language doesn't necessarily draw a distinction between the two. I've noticed something similar in the use of Isto and isso. The formal grammar rule I believe states Isto = Is and Isso = that but it appears that isso is used instead of Isto a word I very rarely come across in my limited study of Portuguese.
@DecodingWordswithAndrew3 ай бұрын
You nailed it...that's exactly right. "este" & "isto" are used primarily in formal written contexts. Even though this is how it's taught in textbooks & apps as the translation for "this" in Portuguese, in the real spoken language people will use "esse" and "isso".
@philbell57743 ай бұрын
@@DecodingWordswithAndrew Thank you for your prompt reply. It's great appreciated. I take it then that in my examples if I used este and isto in a conversation I would come across as being very formal?
@DecodingWordswithAndrew3 ай бұрын
@@philbell5774 Exactly, it would sound really formal. In my videos, I focus primarily on the everyday spoken language.

sorry I have a question, do open E and O appear only in stressed syllables?

generally speaking yes, but it's not an absolute rule as there are exceptions, especially in certain regional accents and specific word forms. hope that helps!
