That is very good for 3 months. It's almost like I don't believe you started from scratch and that you knew some previously (that is a compliment btw). Great job.

Thanks Paul, glossika is the key and daily chatting with strangers.
It's interesting to watch the switch from English to Mandarin his brain does as he talks. He starts unsure of himself and picking and choosing his words, but after his brain switches over to Mandarin mode his speech becomes much more relaxed and natural. Pretty incredible

I got the same problem. Just found out that shì also means market/place, so it also has 2 different characters. But you are telling about your problem in Mandarin! I wish I was already where you are, and I also study a long time. Respect for you, and the great teacher next to you!

Its really nice to watch you speaking in Chinese! It's funny that you said you feel embarassed about your Chinese, It's the same for me, I've been studying Korean for 2 years and I am also embarassed about my korean...
@Blitzheart6 жыл бұрын
저도! I am exactly the same! I feel like my Korean should be at a much higher level than it is because I've been studying for two damn years, but nope! I'm embarrassed that I'm not better at it aha

Thanks For your comment and sorry it's taken so long to respond. I am back now to studying after a looooooong break. Hope you Korean is improving and your having fun with it.

I can't relate but I have some advice to give you. Find a Korean pen pal and practice reading and speaking and writing by yourself, you'll feel more confident soon!

I love the concept of "studying" and "using". I think I've been studying quite a lot but neglecting the "using" part. Time for more practice. Thank you so much! It ISSS inspiring!

Fiona, ni hao, i am desperate to learn Zhongguo, but always forget the words. Can you give me tips to impove my study.
@ellmatic6 жыл бұрын
Hi Munim Khan, Simon can probably help you much better than I can, but I thought I'd chime in since you asked for Fiona to help, and this isn't her channel so you probably won't get an answer. I've been studying Mandarin for a while and I want to share a few things that are working for me. (1) I started with Pimsleur, which I think is an excellent way to begin. You do 30-minute audio lessons in which you learn to understand and participate in very short conversations. The lesson starts, you don't understand much (or anything), and by the end of the lesson you should understand most or all of it. If I remember correctly, there are 120 lessons. (2) After Pimsleur, I moved on to Glossika. These are ~20 minute recordings of random sentences being said in your native language and then in your target language (Mandarin). This has been a *huge* help for me. You learn hundreds or thousands of sentence and then you are free to mix and match to create your own. For example, "I want a book." .... "What kind of car do you drive?" ...Once you learn both of these, you can say "I want a car." etc... It's very effective for me. (3) Viki.com This is basically the Netflix of Asian movies and TV shows. I use it to watch a lot of Chinese TV shows with subtitles. (4) HiNative app - Download this free app and you can ask questions to native Chinese speakers (or any other language you're learning). It's been an invaluable resource for me when I have a question and I need an answer from a native. You usually receive multiple answers within minutes. (5) Du Chinese - This app will help you learn to read Chinese. Awesome!!! (6) Skritter - This app will help you learn to read/write Hanzi (the Chinese characters). Even more awesome!!! (7) The most important thing, though, is to find a Chinese person to practice with!!! Nothing is more important than speaking in real life (or via Skype, etc.) with someone. A good site to find people to do a language exchange with (you teach them your language / they teach you theirs) is mylanguageexchange(dot)com. I'm not affiliated with any of these companies in any way except that I use them all on a daily basis and they have been a tremendous help for me. Enjoy the process!
