Thank you a lot for the explanation, I really needed it. Btw, word order in German works pretty much like this with one exception - in subordinate clauses you put the modal and auxilirary verbs at the end.
@LearnDutchwithAlain

You're welcome. Indeed, knowing German really helps. Another thing is the 'Ich glaube, es wäre gut sein', in Dutch you'd use a 'dat' in between the two sentences.

Hello, it's pretty hard for me to understand when in the sentence the second verb is not being placed at the end for example "we kunnen niet beginnen zonder hem" i dont understand exactly why is "beginnen" is not placed at the end
@LearnDutchwithAlain
@LearnDutchwithAlain Жыл бұрын
Good question, parts starting with prepositions can be put behind the second verb. But they're also correct before the second verb, as in: 'We kunnen niet zonder hem beginnen.' I advise my student to try this as much as possible as it becomes a bad habit to put other words behind the second infinitive, which might be incorrect.

Duolingo has this subject in quite an early position, yet it's an A2 subject? It's especially difficult on uses like "hebben nodig" and "van houden", since the "verb" consists of two parts and they are located in completely different parts.
@LearnDutchwithAlain
@LearnDutchwithAlain Жыл бұрын
It's a subject many students of different levels struggle with, even B1 and B2. It's important to get it right from the start though. If not, you might still make mistakes at higher levels.

Thank you for the video but I have a question. In the sentences below: ''Omdat ik nu ga werken, kan ik vroeger vertrekken.'' Why is the verb ''ga'' not in infinitive form? Isn't it that all verbs go at the end in infinitive form when we use omdat and als? If not is this sentence wrong: ''Als ik meer woog, zou ik snel kunnen lopen.'' Here does kunnen have to be in finite form? Thank you.
@LearnDutchwithAlain
@LearnDutchwithAlain 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, when you're using modal verbs like gaan, you'll conjugate the modal verb. Even with als and omdat. In the sentence "Als ik meer woog, zou ik snel kunnen lopen.', zou is the conjugated modal verb, so indeed kunnen is in the infinitive form.
