A little exercise for you, to practice the OVT: "Wat deed je 5 (of 10) jaar geleden?" Je kunt spreken over: werk, school, hobbies, activiteiten... You can leave a reply with your answers. My answer: 10 jaar geleden ging ik naar de universiteit. In mijn vrije tijd speelde ik gitaar en piano.

This is the best Dutch lesson I have ever had . Very clear and understandable . Thanks I am struggling with learning Dutch so I am asking you to please make your lessons a bit longer and if it is possible to sign up for private lessons on the net? Thanks
@LearnDutchwithNiels7 жыл бұрын
Hi Othishka, thank you! That means a lot to me. I try not to make the lessons too long, because most people only watch for about 6 minutes. For more complicated topics, I'll make several videos discussing different aspects. This way, it's easier for people to find the right info. A 20 minute video already takes half a day to make, so longer videos aren't really possible for me right now, either. I don't currently teach classes, unfortunately. I used to be a teacher, but now that I have a different job, I make videos instead (because I enjoy teaching too much to stop doing it altogether :)

@LearnDutchwithNiels8 жыл бұрын
Graag gedaan Hitomi! That means a lot to me. Compared to other languages, there aren't that many resources out there for Dutch, so I wanted to make clear videos that answer specific questions. A lot of people learning the language get told "That's just the way it is -- you just have to learn it', but I believe that there's always an explanation, or at least a trick to help you.

In Vietnamese language we don’t have tenses for the time and we don’t have much final consonants so let say Dutch is extremely difficult for us to gain the rule in our brain and once we have it in our brain we need to practice how to articulate it. Thanks alot! The way you talk is very calm :))

I remember [many years ago] when I first studied German, we actually learned the verbs as kaufen/kaufte/gekauft or gehen/ging/gegangen. I've tried to do the same with Dutch. English, Dutch and German are quite similar in how we form our verb tenses - but we English have lost our 'ge-' prefix for the past participle along with the use of to be in lieu of to have as the auxiliary verb.
@mep63022 жыл бұрын
That actually makes English simpler. It's interesting in Spanish, we also lost the verb to be (ser) for perfect tenses but Italian and French still keep it. One thing English and Spanish have in common even though these languages come from different language families.

Thanks for the videos they are really helpful. I live in the Netherlands and I'm learning Dutch now but I find the grammar really difficult and I find sometimes the way they combine words to form a sentence and give a specific meaning to it, just doesn't make any sense! So if you could please make more videos about grammar and about other things in Dutch. That would be great!
@LearnDutchwithNiels8 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like the video! If you have any examples of things you don't understand, I'll try to explain them in a future video.

Thanks for your reply. Maybe you can make a video about not only using " aan het" but all the usage of the word "aan" in sentences. And I also find a problem when I see the words "wat" and "wel" in sentences and don't know why they are there or how we put them in a sentence properly! Thanks a lot.

A parallel to English: the 's' in the plural of words (or the third person of present tense verbs) ending in unvoiced consonants (t, p, k) is actually pronounced as an 's', whereas the 's' in the plural of words ending in voiced consonants (d, b, g) or vowels is actually pronounced as a 'z'.

I have been getting the impression lately that Duolingo is okay for practising what I learn but it does not explain enough. I have to keep referring to youtube videos. I just bought a Basic Dutch book, on kindle, written by Jenneke A. Oosterhoff. It goes into the grammar much more than Duolingo. I use an audio book to practise my speaking called Pimslers Dutch. I am wondering if Dutchpod101 would be worth trying too.
