I cannot find enough words to say how invaluable this is. I am beginning to study and have played piano and cello. I have purchased your classical guitar technique and I have a good teacher however I wish you lived in Toronto so that I could study with you.

Bradford what a darn simple method of learning the fretboard... I think having the sheet music broken down for each string would also help the student learn these notes. Visual representation for recognizing the notes as they would appear would also help infuse them in the old noggin. As always a great presentation and lesson

The best way to familiarize the fingerboard is by playing many easy tunes composed for various higher positions. There are many pop tunes arranged for classical guitar you can get for free from internet. Most note don't come by itself in an arrangement but accompanied by a chord, and they repeat. That's why playing tunes is very effective.

Simple but yet very insightful, a great reminder of the work to put in to learn the fretboard and the different notes!! As usual, thank you for sharing.

Absolutely, such a simple thing to do and you get to know the whole fretboard at an early level.

Nice recap Bradford, I used to be a 1st position player until I did your easy progressive single string chromatic and upper position lessons. Cheers. 😁

Oh good! Seems like this is such an obvious place to start but it might seem confusing to students at first with the enharmonic notes. That said, even just saying the musical alphabet is good.

One could SING the note names, and also the fret and string numbers. E.g., “C, 8th fret on the first string.” Once the 2nd/B string is added, play through unisons as well. E.g., “C, 8th fret on the first string. C, 1st fret on the second string.” Et cetera. Cheers!

Thank you for this video Bradford. Can I ask, how do you teach students to quickly recognise the notes across the strings such as when playing a chord and holding down more than one note? I understand the anchor notes which will make the working out a shorter process but if several notes are held down at the same time, that could still take a while. Do you find it helps to learn the notes across the strings as well? For example, the notes at the 7th fret spell BEAD with F sharp and B on the 2nd and 1st strings.

A point that causes me a little confusion. Music notation spoken ABCDEFG does not indicate which ABCDEFG note is to be played until the note is placed on to a staff. I believe the description scientific music name gives a number to separate out the ABCDEFG into groups hence indicating which ABCDEFG is to be played. I understand the threats are a semitone apart like the piano. Just by learning the notes on a string does not help with reading notes on a staff.

So, all the exercises in my book are notated so if you get the book you will see the notation to make that link between spoken letter names and the notation. Also, this is not a sight reading book, instead it maps out ideas on the fretboard. If you want to improve your reading skills please see my method books, in particular my Volume 2 method.

Whoah. This is how I was taught by George Arvola, who used Tony Bradan’s method. Where did you first encounter this approach?
@Thisisclassicalguitar Жыл бұрын
I don't really consider it an approach since it is just the musical alphabet working naturally on the instrument. It's an inherent part of the instrument itself rather than an approach.

I spent weeks/months on each string, because I also learned scales and arpeggios on single strings.

Ya, my new book on Fretboard Orientation covers lots of single string scales. Very helpful.

I find this to be the best way to memorize the notes on the fingerboard. I'll start practicing it. I'm hopeful that within a few weeks I'll be able to locate any note on my instrument Greetings and many thanks from Lebanon :)
