It could've been noted that in everyday language, "kiitos" is often replied simply with another "kiitos".

I'm Finnish on my father's side of the family, and I've always regretted the fact that I don't know a word of the language (well, some words... but I wouldn't use them in polite company). I appreciate these videos. Kiitos.

Really nice to see this kind of channel in youtube :). I've just started to teach Finnish to a Korean friend of mine and I think these videos can be of great help. I would like to add that there is one more sentence for saying "You're welcome" and it is: "Eipä kestä" which kind of means "Don't mention it".

Minä opiskelen suomea. Puhun vahan suomea. Minä asun Kouvolassa. I have learnt finnish for 6 months at university but it was a mess at first. However, I luckily found your videos and some other websites which helped a lot. Thank you for your vids. I hope I can one day confidently say that Minä puhun suomea :D

I find really cool that you don't have to worry about formalities, is not like other languages in which you offend everyone if you forget to use a word.
@IlotikkuFiN9 жыл бұрын
+philbertmill2 Mmmm ... actually you have to worry about them if you're a native speaker. Finnish just isn't an Indo-European language, so things usually work a bit differently. As a rule of thumb you want to use "te" instead of "sinä", use correct suffixes according to a situation and avoid certain colloquial expressions. Finnish people tend to use certain words quite sparingly and when they actually mean them, so often there's no need to add any extra words to make you sound more polite. It's more like the opposite. It's considered rude to try to be more polite by exaggerating your feelings. Use "kiitos paljon" only when you feel a great gratitude towards somebody, not when the cashier gives your the change or something like that. There's also a one less formal way to thank people and it's "kiitti". It's similar to the English "thanks".

Nobody really says "ei se mitään" if there's nothing to be thanked about. People use "ei se mitään" if someone apologizes you and you think there's no reason to do that. If you want to say there's no need to thank you, you can say "ei mitään" so the same expression without "se".

One of the characters in my story is Finnish, but I speak absolutely none of the language (besides, like, 5 words). I wanted him to say at least one thing besides 'moi' so I've been looking up some stuff, and I've been wondering if Google Translate would be reliable for how to say something really simple in Finnish. I've been told that it's ok for French and Japanese, but I'm a little unsure about Finnish...
@robertlane896110 жыл бұрын
For really simple stuff Google Translate is ok'ish, for stuff like 'My name is John' and similar. But for anything more complicated you really should not use it. GT has more or less serious issues translating from indo-european languages to other language groups and vice versa. You could look if Facebook has a Finnish language group and ask for help there, Finnish people tend to be helpful. Sometimes mischievous too so beware you don't end up using naught words in your story ;)
@200puppy710 жыл бұрын
Robert Lane Thanks for the tip ;D Right now I'm working towards learning the language for myself, and I'm only going to use very simple things for it, since Delaire is the only character in my story who really speaks Finnish, and there's little reason for him to say anything in Finnish at all :)
