Paxtan was subsidising petrol. In India it is not that anyone is demanding subsidies on oil. Its just that govt can cut super high taxes by state and central govt. That tax cut could help petrol price to drop below 90 rupees. And we should bring labour, land and farm reform instead of socialist gormints who taxes like crazy to compensate the lack of reforms. Govt should bulldoze their way to pass these reforms.

China has a three- pronged strategy: 1) find some officials in the target country, and give them big “donations” 2) find infrastructure projects which are white elephants in the home country but are of immense strategic value to China, example deep water ports where it can park its submarines. These projects are approved by aforesaid officials. 3) load the project up with debt and since the project was commercially infeasible in the first place, when the project defaults, grab the asset as repayment. Thus India got encircled by Chinese deployments in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal. Bangladesh very wisely stayed out of the trap.

And any answer for the wasteful spending of lakhs of crores - like bullet train, central Vista, statue of unity, new private jets for Modi ji, Narendra Modi stadium - largest in Asia, and so on? With 18000 crores you could have given every corona dead family 4 lakh rupees and still have 4000 crores left. And these families really needed it. But no, Modi will tax medicines and medical equipment during corona, will accept aid from Africa, but won't give money he is using for his Modi Mahal to victims and poor. At this time unemployment was highest, lakhs were orphaned, many didn't even have money for cremation and were floating body in water. They desparately needed help. And the bangaldeshi's in Delhi was fake news. In the same video you can see those Bangladeshis say, they are in India to apply for Malta visa. They came here legally, only to get Malta visa.. And your own Modi ji has given visa on arrival to these bangaldeshi's. Bangladesh has already surpassed India in per capita income. They have a thriving economy there. I think your definition of Dutch Disease is a little off. Dutch Disease happens when a country is too dependent on export on one commodity and this export leads to massive strengthening of the local currency. As a result imports become cheaper and local manufacturing becomes uncompetitive, eventually leading to recession. Dutch disease can’t only be caused by export of commodity it can also be caused by Aid/Debt from other countries. That’s why sometimes it’s believed that aid does more damage to a country than good.

Just check the mind boggling aid US has donated. They earn billions and lose a few hundred millions to army and see it as cost of doing business just like overpaid/pampered ceos who happen to earn exorbitantly as they excel at increasing productivity of organisations. Their main clients were Saudis(ideology) and US(geopolitical interest). The way they see it, recent issues are just an unlucky coincidence where their customers are running dry. Saudis(saturation of ideology), Turkey(financial trouble leading) US (withdrawing from geopolitical interest) and China(recent player in geopolitics of the area so they are stingy). They will come up with a new "product" or a "model" in the coming years. The issue is people see only the inefficient system without seeing the purpose of the structure. If they decided to work like just another country they don't excel at anything and will be wiped out. With the client state model they can increase their population, keep India Afghanistan and Iran in check and simultaneously enjoy a lot of goodwill in deep states of their clients(exceeding even India's reach). You named two outstanding personalities of Pakistan ,who happen to belong to much maligned, ostracized, harassed minority community of Ahmediyas. Bit stranger still is the fact that in spite of all the odds stacked against them, the community could produce stars. I don't know how many more are there in cognito. The Ahemediyas are showing the mirror to tge majority Sunni Punjabi war-lords what they are worth for.Jews were also persecuted at much larger scale and they produced world's highest number of Novel laureates. Pakistan is not only addicted to IMF and world Bank, but more importantly to Islam, which is at the root of all troubles. Hoping, the world can save Pakistan or for that matter any country, unless it gathers all the strength and tries to put its house in order. Luckily for India the country was saved in 1991,because we had P.V.Narasimha Rao as PM who roped in Manmohan Singh to aid him in liberalising our economy and thus saved the day. But these stupid Sunni fanatics of Pakistan shunted out the genius economist, simply because he is an Ahmediya little realizing that such an act is suicidal.

I'm not an economists. And i can tell you there is no need of such an indepth analysis. It's like monitoring and getting an extremely detailed analysis of how a patient's body who is suffering from a serious ailment, is deteriorating without doing anything about the treatment. It's like telling a patient, today one of your kidney is damaged, your second kidney would be damaged after 'x' days. Your lungs would deteriorate by 'y' days. And you would die within 'z' days. And the fact of the matter is Pakistan is largely a deteriorated society. Nobody in his right state of mind would be willing to invest there. Yes Sri Lanka has defaulted on its debt, but i can tell you they will recover. They may recover by 2, 3, 5 or 7 years but they will recover. As soon as the situation in Pakistan deteriorates, it will inevitably go down the Afghanistan way. Because the society is radicalised and reacts to the directions of handful of people. It cannot recover by something like India did in 1991. Because investors are in no way investing a single penny, with such a unrest in the country.

No doubt, Muslims are in a very bad situation at this point in history and, if you have a strongly negative opinion Muslims, I would not try to convince you otherwise. In fact, the deplorable condition of Muslims is not because of Islam, but is because of not understanding it and not following it. In essence, Muslims are not only ignorant and uneducated about modern day technical and economic sciences, but they are even more so about Islam itself. A very apt analysis on Pakistan eco situation. The issue is that we people do understand the problems but the root cause is the military & the the political mafia apathetic to it. How do you define a policy as populist ? Is there an acceptable yardstick ? What appears to be dole in a particular state is a necessity for another to take it forward on development path. There would be no unanimity on this point. In the recent covid pandemic, every top global economist including Dr.Raghuram Rajan & Abhijit advised india to give dole upto Rs.5000/= to each citizen for certain period of time in view of exceptional context. When Kamaraj as Chief minister of T.N launched mid day meal scheme in 50s for school going children he was severely criticized. It was equated with populism with a hidden motive. He was critisized for squandering of state scarce resources ? But for that scheme T.N couldn't have become one of the top most educated & foward looking states. Now the same scheme is hailed & has been replicated in all states Now DMK Stalin has been giving Rs.1000/= P.M. to college going girls to encourage them to pursue college studies. Many countries have been giving subsidies for exporters to boost exports to earn forex. Are all these doles ? One has to look at the context, purpose, uniqness & necessity of the situation to define dole & populism . Looking at the economic woes of Pakistan & Srilanka from here & comparing them with india is far fetched & wouldn't be realistic. Only economic experts of those countries could study & analyze the causes & suggest appropriate remedies based on differing ground realities in both countries . In simple analogy, each individual is a different patient for the same sickness. The process of their treatment may vary. That can only depend on their other health factors & age.

A welfare scheme will become populist if the govt gives all instead of giving it to the deserving people. In the case of TN 1. In the yester years they gave TVs, mixies, grinders, fans to all 2. Now 100 units of power is free for all including those who are affording multiple air-conditioner at homes. 3. Free bus passes to all women. Yu may even be a IT paying IT professional 4. Free rice to all.

Commendable that you found Atif Mian and you catching up on economics. I learnt from your review of Mian’s work how the forex spread is a good indicator of foreign (private) capital availability. Thank you. While “Dutch Disease” is a rather well known concept among (development) economists, what I got from Mian was explaining political economy based on the pursuit of the elite class (who always win in the context of a particular country). In Pakistan, apart from the Military (since the Independence), the land holders are the elites, whereas in East Asia, the elites are export oriented businesses. In comparison, for example in Gujarat the elites are the trading class who influenced Patel to oppose Nehru accepting cross-subsidy of the land holders as part of keeping the whole sub-continent together. Fortunately, PM Modi is cut from the same cloth as Patel. Hope we are ready to talk about “religion” in Modi’s India - elections. Is that why India got rid of a top-notch monetary economist such as Raghuram Rajan to get Urjit Patel (and now Shaktikanta Das)?

Hi Shekhar and the print team. Just a little fact check, I think on point (1) when he mentions the spread on $ Debt to be 16%, I think he is probably referring to the yield spread between US govt debt and the PK govt debt (both issued in their own local currencies) and hence because of the high yield, only speculators would want to buy PK govt bonds i.e. only speculators and not investors and hence it is closed to private debt funding. Also their rating is B- and that is probably another reason.

I think 4:00 definition of spread is wrong. Spread usually refers to difference in bond yields. Meaning in this case difference in interest rates that Pakistan pays vs what US govt pays on borrowing in dollars. The US govt can simply print US dollars so it is presumed that their rate is baseline/least likely to default. A spread of 16% means that Pakistan is substantially indebted and is consequently more likely to default.
