Shekhar, I don't know how you could have gotten it so wrong. The person you are talking about is Lt. Gen. Zaheer-ul-Islam Abbassi who is different from the picture you are showing - that of Lt. Gen. Zaheer-ul-Islam, a completely different person who was Pakistani DG-ISI during Nawaz Sharif's 3rd term and is accused of helping Imran Khan in his infamous dharna of 2014. Such an editorial blunder is not expected from you and your team. More factual error - During Kargil, Lt. Gen. Tauqeer Zia was the Pakistani DGMO. The Pakistani DG-ISI during the Kargil war was Lt. Gen. Ziauddin Butt, someone appointed by Nawaz and mistrusted by Musharraf.

You need to be a pure Islamist if you want to rise higher in ranks. Many generals as rightly mentioned in video are patrons of Islamist organizations which openly preach radicalism. People often like to find "context" and "reasons" for events. Sometimes "stupidity" is simply STUPIDITY. Kargil was conceived by Musharraf post-Operation Meghdoot. It was Musharraf's "pet project". The plan was discussed with both Zia and Bhutto but nobody green-lit it. Becoming the army chief allowed Musharraf to "re-launch" the operation despite the strategy being totally outdated. Of course, India made many blunders but ultimately it was an "war of attrition" with odds favoring India.

Some shepherds informed the Indian Army by that time it was too late. 2) The larger than expected loss of life: Some have squarely blamed this on the then Army chief Mr. VP Malik for his tactical blunders. Even Airforce use was not favored by him. Of course, India took its time for the fear of escalation.

Pakistani managed to get 120 sq km of land in Chamb. Chamb was always difficult to defend and hold because it is plain area protruding into Pakistan and surrounded by Pakistsni territory from three sides. So a brigade was required to hold Chham. Najam Sethi (the Pak journo) has done a wonderful analysis on Kargil (with many Punjabi zingers). While Pakistan lost the war decisively, one has to also look at the larger fallout: (1)The loser of this war was rewarded with Presidentship in Pak (2)The international humiliation quickly evaporated and Pak was back to being US ally post 9/11 (3)The India-West strategic alignment never really took off despite the mutual "attraction". Even now some level of DISTRUST exists (perhaps, for genuine reasons). (4) India's continued vulnerability in Kashmir.

Dear shekhar gupta sir, along with the army and the Air force the BSF also played a very vital role in kargil war but as usual the media has forgotten to include the contribution of the BSF . while the army came down from the mountain top posts in the winter which the Pakistanis later occupied, the BSF troops never left their similar mountain top posts. That is why the Pakistanis could never capture the bsf posts. Later the army used some of these BSF posts as staging grounds for recapturing the other posts that they had lost to the Pakistanis. Even some BSF soldiers were injured in this war in action. But as usual the media and the government gives no visibility to the contribution of the BSF. Shekhar sahab, your editors have made a mistake I believe without your knowledge. They have put in pictures of Lt Gen Zaheer ul Islam who was appointed the DG ISI in 2012 and is still alive today. He is not to be confused with Maj Gen Zaheer ul Islam Abbasi who launched the operation in 1990 and was sacked in 1995 for his role in organising a coup against Benazir Bhutto and passed away in 2009.

An apt subject for discussion on Vijay Diwas. Great skill, SG, that you find so much time to read so many books and articles and run a commentary on the subjects therein. “war is polarizing”. So is soccer (e.g. Europe, England), Cricket, Baseball (USA) and so on…. Tailpiece: Even Buddhism says, “War is the last resort for peace”.

I have one feedback about this CTC, SG. While the content of this episode was a gem, the overall experience felt like trying to look for the gem in a mine. The talk didn't have enough structure and deflected from the talking point multiple times. Some of the footnotes you tried adding in between disturbed the flow of the show. If it was a book. it would be an amazing read but as a video based communication medium, it was a challenge in maintaining focus on the topic.

Najam Sethi also did a set of interviews with Muneeb Faroukh on the Kargil war and how it evolved from a Pakistani POV. Very interesting discussion and largely in line with what was presented here. Pakistanis also never handled this war as a join operation with their navy and Air Force and severely underestimated Indian resolve to get back what was ours and our ability to bounce back after the initial setbacks. He also very right about Musharraf. The man has the IQ of a goldfish and did more damage to Pak than anyone else save Zia.

India won the war but it took a high toll on our soldiers. The lesson to learn is for something like Kargill never to happen again. We need to improve our military hardware.Imagine what we could have done with one of those U.S Himars rocket systems. We could have finished the war alot quicker. It starts with space satellites "the eyes in the sky" followed by drones and precision guided or GPS led missiles/rockets.Also our intelligence services were caught napping with them having no idea that the Pakistanis had crossed over to our side.
