I remember having a hard time finding a way to answer a negative question. I had searched books and online a lot but found little to no information. Then, I stumbled upon this video of yours. This has to be the best video about this topic, but I was still very confused. After a while, I have discovered the formula: 1) People give negative questions when they DO NOT EXPECT you to provide a negative answer. It is not necessary to have to give a positive question first. 2) "Don't you like pizza?" is equal to "You don't like pizza?" - A negative sentence that functions as a question. To make it even easier for you, let's ask: "Do you NOT like pizza?". 3) Basically you still give the answers like when you are asked positive questions because "Yes, I don't" and "No, I do" seem counter-intuitive. 4) The key is, you MUST be specific in your answers. You can even make sense of "Yes, I don't" and "No, I do" as long as you choose the OBJECT of the Yes/No correctly: "Don't you like pizza?" / "You don't like pizza?" / "Do you not like pizza?" => "Yes, I like pizza." => "No, I don't like pizza." => "Yes, (you are right). I don't like pizza." => "No, (you are wrong). I like pizza."

I like the way you teach Ronnie....and it is easier for us to understan the English language better each day....however in Spanish we use to ask negative questions very often....expecting a negative or positive answer.....greetings from Nogales México.

There are two similar uses more for negative questions according to my book. I had no realized the use of negative questions until I read something about this topic, this, because my mother tongue is spanish.

"Negative Questions" are often asked to "shame" the other person. My Jewish mama would only ask "Negative Questions." For example, "Don't you know how to clean your darn room?!?" or "What's wrong with you, can't you keep a civil tounge in your head?!?" or "Everyone else bought their mothers Cadillacs, don't you care about me?!?" or "Aren't you going to put on some decent clothes?!?" etc. This mothering technique of inflicting shame and guilt with negative questioning, kept us kids in line! (and in the therapist's office for years).

I am a California native transplanted to Central Arkansas. Southerners seem to frame questions and statements negative either for emphasis or to appear sophisticated. "Rhonda's a real nice person, so don't be surprised if she doesn't come see you!" (What do I have to do to get her to come see me?) "No, she'll come, and then let's see if we CAN'T get you better." (Is there any team working to see if we CAN me better? CAN'T seems to be the wrong goal.) "Were you not surprised? Is she not just the best?" (Isn't this just the most convoluted method of communicating? It does my head in!!!)

Good class. Additionally, a negative question is a bias question. To get surprised, you need to ask a question, but even without asking an affirmative question, you can ask it if you are bias for 'no'. Am I right Ronnie?

You gave the perfect example. You ask again in affirmative with question accent. You ask in negative question when you have previously info. Like you was with someone the whole morning and you saw the person didn't eat anything you will ask in negative way, you don't need to ask in positive way first
