Learn Greek with one-minute dialogues! The simplest way to learn a language is by listening to casual everyday conversations.

Dialogue summary:
In this dialogue, two girfriends meet in the street, late in the afternoon. Maria and Sophia.
They talk about how they lost touch, Maria sends her regards to Nikos, Sophia's husband/boyfriend/relative/mutual friend (not specified) and they separate with the promise of meeting again soon.

I know that I am talking about directions and more vocabulary plus in Xanthi there is a Muslim area and in Athens there is a synagog as I visited it before. so in case I visit there how to say it :)

just forgive and move on in every place and in every religion you will find all types of characters and personalities, working on big Fridays or Sundays or any day we could not stop them, may be they need money or they have to work otherwise the owner will fire them .all you can do is to show the beauty of your religion or personality and do not make any personal behavior as it is the public and all from specific religion do the same. some people miss understand the difference between religion and behavior and they do not show the beauty of their beliefs. just smile and forgive and move on. may God bless you .

HI Lina, could you explain why the phrase 'πρέπει να πηγαίνω' is used instead of 'πρέρει να πάω' please? I thought πηγαίνω was present tense and shouldn't go after να. Also, is that more common in casual use than 'πρέπει να φύγω'? Thanks.

Dear Jim, I'm so sorry for the delay. If you are still looking for an answer, here is mine. "Πρέπει να πηγαίνω", could mean two things: First, is almost a fixed expression, and it means "I have to get going" (as it's time to go). Second, it means "I have to go" (somewhere, repeatedly). In this case, it wouldn't make sense, saying it by itself. You have to specify how often you must go there. So you need a time expression showing frequency. For example: "Πρέπει να πηγαίνω στο σχολείο κάθε μέρα." - "I have to go to school every day". I hope this helps!

Hi Mona! I want to go up the mountain is: "Θέλω να ανέβω στο βουνό". "I want to go downstairs" :"Θέλω να κατέβω στον κάτω όροφο" or "Θέλω να κατέβω στο ισόγειο" (I want to go down to the ground floor).

Hi Jacub! What you wrote means: "The mosque is 100 meters straight ahead, then take the first left." But, you should use the word "μετά" instead of "τότε" and you 've also left out the verb "στρίψτε" = turn. So, the correct Greek phrase could be: "Το τζαμί βρίσκεται (στα) εκατό μέτρα ευθεία. Μετά στρίψτε στον πρώτο δρόμο αριστερά".

Καιρο εχω να σε δω - what is the meaning of "καιρο" miss Lina can I say δεν εχω να σε δω για λιγο - will Greek people understand me?

Hi! "καιρός" means time (and also weather). "Καιρό έχω να σε δω" means "I haven't seen you for some time", but in Greek there is no negation here. Attention, this is not "Παρακείμενος" or the Past Perfect Tense equivalent. I understand that "Δεν έχω να σε δω για λίγο" is an attempt to translate literally "I haven't seen you for a while" but it doesn't make much sense. (I would translate it "I don't have to see you for a short time" but in Greek it makes even less sense.) You could say "Δεν σε έχω δει εδώ και καιρό" (I haven't seen you for a long time). Here, there is a negation and it is the "Παρακείμενος" tense. Consider the phrase "έχω να" as a special way to expess that you haven't done something for some time. Example: "Έχω να κοιμηθώ τρεις μέρες" - I haven't slept in three days". Ι hope this helped! Thanks for watching!

No problem, I'm here to help! Maybe I confused you by using "εδώ και". It's an adverbial phrase of time that means in/for. Example: "Έχω να τον δω εδώ και δυο χρόνια" - "I haven't seen him in two years". So in "Δεν σε έχω δει εδώ και καιρό", "εδώ και" = "for".

Yes, these two words are used together only with this meaning. "Εδώ", is an adverb of place, it means "here". So don't be confused by this special combination, it's quite common, but basically "εδώ"means "here" and "και" means "and". Only when you see them together they mean "for" and after that you will always see a word or phrase of time. Don't worry too much about that. There are other ways to express "for", depending on the tense or the syntax of the sentence.

Hi Lina. I think you're a very good teacher and your videos can be very useful. BUT the speed you read is ridiculous for beginners you seem to forget that linking all words together like a machine gun is totally unhelpful for beginners. The people who would easily follow your lessons are those who already speak Greek. Please slow down. When teaching to beginners words should ALWAYS be separate.

Hello! :) I know that most of my lessons are addressed to beginners, at least for now, but 1 min dialogues are a bit different! They can help more advanced students practice their skills, but they're also there as a reference, so that beginners understand their goals. Sometimes you study hard, you learn all the grammar, and you feel ready to blend with the native speakers! And when the time comes you are disappointed to realize that you don't get a single word of what they're saying! It has happened to me and it was really frustrating. So that's why I made these videos short and simple, without covering their grammar or syntax. Maybe I should create a new series of dialogues for beginners. Thank you for your feedback, it's much appreciated!

Yes I found that. I learnt at a Greek language programme and took exams mostly reading, writing and focused on grammer, but not much speaking. When listening, I agree it is completely different and my level of Greek was non existant when listening. We need these levels of dialogue to understand where the words do not appear to seperate and (for English speakers) how in Greek the words appear to us, to run into each other. Please do not speak slower or seperate the words as this does not help 'in the real world'.
