I'm a Hebrew teacher, and I was looking for an additional resource for my students. I can not recommend your course: it contains a lot of mistakes! For instance, in this lesson: 1. Consonant letter "Alef" does not mean a vowel sound "A." 2. The word "roof" גַּג has the vowel point "Patach" (and not "Kamatz"). 3. The first vowel in the word "dad" אַבָּא is also "Patach."

Angel Veronica In Ancient Hebrew, א and ע got distinct pronunciation. However, Modern Hebrew doesn’t distinct the two, in terms of pronunciation, and only a few which their families originate from specific countries might pronounce ע properly. Same with כ and ח. Additional different pronunciation letters that became redundant: תּ-ט, ג, ד, ו , כּ-ק, ס, צ, ר, שׂ,ת The ones I’ve placed alone are ones which their pronunciation either changed or been neglected. (ת-th like in thin, ר-different from Arabic ר which was the original, שׂ - a special sh sound, צ - sometimes Arabic س, Arabic ظ and ض, and ס used to be like Arabic ס, and ו-w, ד-th like in that,ג like Arabic غ)

thank you for clearing that up for me. I just couldn't find any logical explanation to why there was kamatz on first letter in aba. I think she just means that alef alone has the vowel A. I listen to a lot of Hebrew music and just from looking at the titles it's obvious that alef can have other vowels than A

In the word Aba, why is the aleph needed at the end of the word? How can someone know that it is needed to write Aleph at the end of the word if it's not needed for the pronunciation of the word? If there would be no aleph at the end of the word wouldn't the pronunciation be exactly the same?

The sound for א is somewhat nuanced, and is silent. So when using Niqqud, I think the vowel sound is added following each consonant. So, the characters sound out ":silent: + :A:", ":B: + :A:", ":silent:", and the whole word sounds out ABA.
@SKyrim190
@SKyrim190 8 жыл бұрын
So א is technically a consonant, with a very subtle sound, that most modern speakers of Hebrew don't even bother doing?
@HoochFighter
@HoochFighter 8 жыл бұрын
א is a consonant, but since there are no true vowels (only Niqqud), I believe א absorbs the sound the vowel would make.

Okay... 2 lessons in & I'm already confused by the niqquds. If they are to denote a vowel sound between it's letter & the next letter isn't it redundant when placed under a letter that already has a vowel sound? In the first lesson the word Aba (father) is introduced & pronounced as it would when saying the corresponding sound of each letter (A-B-A), but in this lesson she adds the niqquds, so why does it not change the pronounciation to "Ah-ah-Bah-ah" (A-A-B-A-A)?

the reason we add the ' to some letters as gimel, tsadik and zayin it's because that sound doesn't exist originally in hebrew, in ancient hebrew. the sounds of "j" like jelly, the sound of "ch" like china, the sound of "zh" like in je suis in french.

I have the same question.. since the word aba already has the vowel alef twice, that makes the sound ''a'', why would you need the kamatz under the beit? Also why put the kamatz under alef (two ''a'' sounds together?) ?
@hali3641
@hali3641 9 жыл бұрын
Sofia Semitsoglou because alef not always mean A (usually but not always).sometimes it means O or E or I so if you want it to sound A you need the kamatz.
@johnhsu9904
@johnhsu9904 9 жыл бұрын
+Sofia Semitsoglou Im new to hebrew too but i think of it like this: if you have "ah", "bah", and "cah", it seems like bah and cah are the only ones beginning with consonants, when in hebrew, the "ah" techinically has a consonant in front, which would be alef. So really alef sounds like a grunt or a cough where you don't vocalize.

The vowels are represented by the Niqqud (what you call dots etc) meaning "kamats" and "patakh" for "A", "khirik" for "I", "shuruk" for "U", "tserei" for "E" and "kholam" for "O". Aleph is not a vowel it is a consonant, and the vowel you hear is from the assigned niqqud. You can use different niqqud to make aleph sound like a different vowel. But niqqud is typically not written it is memorized in time, both in modern and ancient hebrew (bible). One can actually read English if you are a well practiced reader without vowels since you already have them memorized for words, it is not as hard as you think.
