Excellent video (and I love the graphics too). I found the bit about the speaker icon the most helpful. I've always wondered how people got their icons so neatly formatted like that. Well done!

Dansky I agree with David, this was very helpful. I wish you were getting more views to keep you motivated because I'd love to see follow up videos. This is exactly what I needed in my Illustrator learning path. I'll spread the word.

Rob Levin Ah thanks Rob, that's good to know. If you don't mind me asking, what sort of other tutorial videos would you like to see? I use Adobe® Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign mostly - and am happy to carry on doing more tutorials if they're useful for sure!

Dansky Personally, I'm transitioning from already being pretty decent with Photoshop to getting to the same proficiency in Illustrator. I've found that "doing" is super helpful for my learning style and I definitely benefit from your tut here (so I guess more like this would be nice). Here are some more ideas: Designing web layouts with Illustrator (there's so many PS examples but, I see my colleagues using Illustrator to do this so I know it's a viable if not preferred option). Could do one Blog, one Corporate, one Dashboard or whatever. I think a few would be awesome. More icons would be awesome. Filled vs. Bordered sets. Sketch to icon, etc. etc. Font building, lettering, typography for noobs. E.g. going from being decent to typography to total "hipster" font wow-ness lol Hope that jogs some ideas. Super appreciate the efforts! Cheers ;)

Rob Levin Awesome thanks Rob! I'm doing a lot more design tutorials now on a regular basis, and have added more icons and web layouts to my list of videos to create :) And if you think of anything else that'd be helpful to you, feel free to let me know!

Hi there, Thank you very much for creating and posting this tutorial. It was really helpful to watch, especially the part about Object > Expand. @Dansky, would it be possible for you to show how to design a slightly more difficult line icon in Illustrator, for example a truck (for the logistics company)? Thanks!

Great video. Would've been nice if you talked through the polish phase, too. In particular, on the mute icon, how did you make the end points of the speaker portion smoothly merge with the end points of the base of the speaker?

how would you save those individually to add to app/site at this point?
@ForeverDansky10 жыл бұрын
josh hicks There's a number of different ways - though personally I would either copy/paste into Photoshop to save as PNGs with transparency. Or save out individually from Illustrator as SVG files so they retain the nice pin-sharp edges on websites.

Thanks!! It was amazing! But I would like to know how you exported them. Am having trouble with exporting my icons.
@pablozamora54304 жыл бұрын
If you are trying to export them to save the images and use the icons, you can go to File, Export and then choose PNG format with no background so that they're transparent, and that's it. I hope this solves your question.

Very good tutorial, thanks for sharing. Do you happen to use Adobe Fireworks? I've experimented with Adobe Illustrator to make icons, but they come out quite blurry, and I found it hard to do pixel-precise work on it. How can you preserve that icon crispiness when you make very small icons in the 32x32, 16x16 px scale? Any tips to make those sharp small icons? I'm new to making graphics, so tutorial on that would be greatly appreciated, thanks again.

Thank you so much for this! I have one question, when I repeat what you've done to cut the circle for the headphones, mine becomes sort of like a D shape, and when I manually cut that bottom line off, the ends look different than yours. Small detail, but I want to know what causes this.
@ForeverDansky9 жыл бұрын
scully You're welcome Scully. Once you've created the circle, go to the OBJECT menu and then click either EXPAND or EXPAND APPEARANCE. Illustrator then forgets that this shape is a stroke/outline and will treat it like it would any other shape, and should allow you to cut into it using the PATHFINDER tools. Typically if you try to cut into a shape like this that is made up of a stroke/outline that hasn't been expanded, Illustrator will try and join the anchor points for you, and I think this may be why yours' was turning into a D shape. Hope this helps and thanks for watching :)

Hello dansky I create icons using adobe illustrator and I export into Adobe Photoshop file. but when I open the file in photoshop I can not change the color of the icon, can you solve this, can you solve this? thanks
@ForeverDansky8 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Copy/paste the icon into Photoshop as a 'Smart Object'. Then double-click the smart object icon in the layers panel. It will load the icon back up into Illustrator. Edit the icon/colour etc, save the file and close it down. Your changes will then update in Photoshop. Hope this helps :)
