Hi Jason! I teach pastel workshops here in NZ. I had a student who wanted to have a go at illustrating leopard eyes, so I purchased your tutorial for her to try at home during the school holidays! Wow, I was absolutely blown away by the fantastic job she did of it, and in such a short time frame! You have an amazing talent and a real knack for teaching others! :D I've been binging on your tutorials too and after 20 years of working with Colourfix pastel card I've now changed to using pastel matt ...what a difference it's made!

Thank you so very much for sharing. It's hard to find which medium would be my favorite and seeing how to use them and getting an artists perspective helps.

Dear Sir, fur looking natural. awsome technique. Can you suggest me what you use to fix soft pastels color. I am portrait lover and I am using Gallery soft pastels, Cretacolor pastel pencils and canson Mi-Tenties . After completing my portrait I used camlin fixative spary to fix the pastel color but my portrait became dull and dusty. Kindly suggest me what should I do.

TFS like you I’ve had a disaster with pastels but really want to try again. Can you recommend a good paper to try? I use Bristol board for my CP work, can I use that or do I need a textured pastel paper?

I'm always disappointed when I find people tracing the outlines of things. I know lots of people do it but trying to draw things in the correct place and proportionally is the hardest bit. Showing the outline is being open about it though.

Cara Bell many of us practice for years doing free hand, but we are mostly done spending time on that part, we paid our dues. Even if it is traced we still spend hours putting in the work, don't be mistaken.

Danni G I understand what's involved in both

Cara Bell then your comment was unnecessary

Everyone is allowed an opinion and genuinely I'm disappointed when people trace. I understand there's a lot of work and time that goes into everything else but when I'm drawing that's the most difficult part. Maybe one day I'll trace, maybe I won't. Just now I want to get better at freehand so I keep at it.

Cara Bell and good for you, but don't bash people who carries that talent anyway 🤷
