The twirling the pencil is such a neat tip! Thank you for your tutorials!

I like using watercolor under pastel. It was the best way for my style to get rich darks without getting mud too.

Thanks so much, Jason. Your work is astounding and your tutorials so enlightening. I'm working on a drawing on Fabriano120gm 15% cotton. This was sold to me as pastel suitable but I see that the description on the back doesn't mention pastel. I'm struggling now to add fine detail, as if the paper won't accept more. I have been blending lightly in between. Any advice would be appreciated 🙂

What paper are you using? I'm trying to find a paper that suits my working style. I recently tried Colorfix. Absolutely loved the texture and how tough it is. Can erase with no issues.

Some pastel artists use an alcohol underpainting.Do you recommend that?
@timclayton82146 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your great videos. What do you think of using another medium such as inktense ink for the underpainting, so as not to fill up the tooth of the paper?
@wildlifeartjm6 жыл бұрын
I've never used it. Sorry

Love your videos Jason - they've encouraged me to get my pastels back out, and have answered *so* many questions I had! One I haven't found the answer to - what colour pastelmat paper to use...? For a wildlife study, say a cheetah laying in grass, I can use a light to mid tone paper. If I have a lovely pink flower with white highlights on a green background though, would I have to use a really light tone paper to ensure the white highlights were preserved?
@wildlifeartjm6 жыл бұрын
No. Just put the light colour in 1st. So no contamination under the flower . I have lots more in depth tips on my patreon channel. Hundreds of hours of pastels.

SpectraFix is best applied by a flairosol bottle. It sprays like a very fine mist!

Just wondering, can acrylic and oil paints be used on top of layers of pastel?
@wildlifeartjm6 жыл бұрын
i have heard of others do this but i personally dont
@Kyomiibrown6 жыл бұрын
Robert Yes, but it’s pointless really as both acrylic and oil would cover the pastel and if putting over a few layers of pastel it might compromise adhesion. Only way I have used acrylic over pastel is using a pastel pencil for the initial outline drawing instead of graphite.
@RobertF-6 жыл бұрын
@@Kyomiibrown Right, there probably wouldn't be much of a point to it, haha. Always good to experiment with technique and combining mediums though, even if it doesn't work every time. Outlining a canvas with pastel instead of graphite or charcoal is interesting though, I might try that. Thanks.
