NOTES: - If you really don’t get this, it’s not about pronouncing anything totally native-speaker-perfectly. It’s about not making up nonexistent letters in the word that make it sound extremely silly - I made this because it is not consistent at all in the game. If it was, you could simply just say that it’s a nation in Teyvat and has its own pronounciation. But it always seems like nobody told anybody how to say this, so here we are - By pronouncing it correctly I mean saying it at least how it’s written and not mixing up which letter gets softer (it’s written as SneZHnaya, not SHneZnaya). Saying the E as YE is just for bonus points at this point. My standards can’t be too high here - Accenting the second half of the word isn’t correct, but it makes sense in English, because it’d be indeed weird if you change accents just for one word - German has a system for when you say S as SH at the beginning of a word and in this case it would still be S, so idk what the directors are smoking
@Antares-t8m10 күн бұрын
Regarding the system in German: the letter S would only be pronounced as SH if the letter T or P follows it, such as Stadt or Spielen. So Snezhnaya would still be pronounced as SNezhnaya and not SHnezhnaya😊
@natsudragneel26409 күн бұрын
If it were pronounced in a German way it would be more like snesch na ja and not like the english version of schnes na ja. And yeah they also can't pronounce Mondstadt or anything German and also most of the other names such as Tighnari... Hope what they are smoking is at least good cause it's gotta be a whole lot

@atriyakoller13611 күн бұрын
English generally doesn't get Russian stress patterns, and, as a Russian, I find stress easier in English than I do in Russian. Actually, in linguistics (lol, my degree being useful, hooray!) phoneticians have 3 types of stress: duration, tone, energy. So, duration stress is when the stressed syllable is longer than an unstressed ones, tone is about tone variation in stressed vs unstressed syllables, and energy is basically pronouncing the stressed syllables witb slightly more force than unstressed ones. All languages have all 3 types, but one type usually dominates. In English, energy is the dominant type with a little tone and duration variation, but much less. In Russian, duration is the main type, with energy and tone having some presence too, but much less than energy in English, for example. And as for tone stress, the best example I remember is Japanese. So, English speakers may not even notice a Russian stressed syllable as vividly because of how the stress works differently in English and Russian. It is noticeable, but some may miss it. And that's how a Russian BAbushka became baBUSHka in English 😂 Also, Russians usually get stress right in English, but I've definitely had a few students who simply always heard stress incorrectly, and I actually had to tell them about these types and what they should pay attention to when listening in English.

@@aphelionbeatI'm Russian, but they're not perfect, but probably the most accurate ones in the game, except for some NPCs' pronunciation in Fontaine (like the Fontaine blacksmith's pronunciation of Oratrice Mecanique D'Analyse Cardinale is actually French). Also, I remember a segment Zach Aguilar talked about with old Tightari's VA which actually made a lot of sense: the pronunciations staying original just clash with the flow of English speech. And also, as a Russian, who speaks English (I think I'd pass a C2 exam if I ever took one) and German as well as some Italian (both less fluently than English though), I sometimes have to do some facial gymnastics to switch accents because I retain the accent of the language I was speaking previously. Like, if I switch to Russian from English, I make a few weird faces, otherwise I'll have an English accent in Russian 😂 because my facial muscles just get almost locked in a different configuration, and as far as I'm aware, I'm not alone, so, imagine voice actors having to do small pauses all the time. It's much better to have adapted versions.

@@atriyakoller136yeah, it totally makes sense. The accent doesn’t have to be there, but there are a lot of things that you can comfortably say in an English sentence while also reading it correctly. @@aphelionbeat yeah, they were exaggerating to make the point more obvious:) but otherwise I agree. Also, not quite, "emerites" instead of "eremites" is a different linguistic process :D it's called metathesis, if I'm not mistaken, it's the same as when some English speakers pronounce "ask" as "aks", and it's present in many languages, one of the more notable examples is "cheese" in Italian 'formaggio' and in French 'fromage' - notice how the first letters shifted places ☺️

Can confirm that. 👍 Also, in case any learners or non German speakers find it interesting, if a word starts with St- or Sp-, the S is usually pronounced as "sh". I can think of Stock (stick), stehen (to stand) and stark (strong) as examples for ST-words and Spaß (fun) and springen (to jump) as examples for SP-words. However I think that there are no other consonants apart from T and P with which S is pronounced as sh. So even if you were to find a word in German with Sn- at the beginning, it wouldn't be pronounced as Shn-.

Snezhnaya with the accent on the second half seems better to me because of a few reasons: - Some words can and will have different accent points because it's only based on russian. It does not entirely use russian language. - In some cases words will adapt over time and will change as the nation itself progresses. - It is also more likely based on Tsarist Russia (Russian Empire) and not more closer Soviet Russia or even modern Russia (Although it probably will take some inspiration from those as well). This could mean that they use a more old version of language. (Speaking from Kazakhstan over here! I don't really care how people pronounce it, you can do it hoe you like but just wanted to drop my version.)

But ik it's not a strongsuit of the VAs and their directors so I can't really be too mad at them. But it kinda is the director's job too so... idk A recent example is Grudoc (won't say which quest, but it's a side character, largely unimportant). They say Grudok, instead of Grudots. I assume it's a Polish name, and if my orthography check is correct, is /ts/ in Polish. Natlanese names are forgivable tho, like Yohualtecuhtin, but again, a look thru the Nahuatl orthography can reveal clues that lead to a more accurate answer - "yoh-wahl-TEH-kwteen" in this case.

Now that you've learned how to say cryo nation's name, it's time to correct other mispronounced words! Not do-tore-ay, but do-to-e (Il Dottore) Not tar-tag-lee-uh, but tar-tie-ah (Tartaglia) Not pant-a-low-n, but pant-alone-eh (Pantalone, can't get over his name being pants) *I am not too good in Italian, but these where corrections that my babbo, who is fluent in Italian, gave me.

I'm not sure if it was on accident, but are you sure that the last -e for Pantalone is pronounced twice? I don't see why it would be.

Isn't it Tar-ta-lia?

I know that it's kinda off topic, but i scared that everything in Snezhnaya will called or considered only as russian. Like there's already alot of slavic culture (which is mostly Ukrainian, Belarusian and surprisingly Polish) and idk which is exactly, but i afraid to be wrong so i just name it "other very far culture from russian". And I'm not even talking about the possible asian part, because Russia, if not in the majority, then in half is Asia. To me it's a problem for 1 reason and that kinda polical sorry, but it's important. So, right now there's a war, a conflict which is result of centries of trying to steal history and culture of a more successful(kinda) neighbor (even the name lol). And in general, many nationalities in Russia are far from the Russians themselves in the concept of nationality, not citizenship. All this is to say that people should immediately understand that in Genshin all regions except Liyue and Inazuma have different countries for inspiration, not just one. After all even if Hoyo tried to find only Russian inspiration there no precise calculation that something from a foreign culture will not appear into concepts, at least due to the theft of a culture that has long been remembered as Russian. So please, someone who reading this, try not to think of Snezhnaya as only Russia thing, please..

Exactly. I was afraid of this ever since they dropped the name of this region. It reminded me of when an American hears any Slavic language and automatically thinks it’s Russian. But so far it seems that hoyo has a more broad inspiration and research. After all, we got a musician named Dvořák in an event. Of all names they chose a Czech name. Poor voice actors 😂😂
