Learn how to read mechanical (HVAC) construction drawings in this video. I'll explain how I approach reading a set of mechanical construction drawings (put together by a mechanical engineer) as well as focusing in on heating, cooling and the types of mechanical equipment we'll find in a building. Enjoy!

I'm an Architectural intern working at a firm. Despite this not being what I studied in school it's still VERY useful for me to become a better well-rounded architect in the future; this stuff helps me understand consultant drawings at my office. Thank you!!!!

If you could make a video on what types of subcontractors cover what scopes of work that’d be sick, or if you could do a video going over PEMBs at a high level that’d also be awesome. Either way, great videos!!!
@planandspec

Great suggestions! I will do one on the subs/scope. I'll think to see if I can combine the PEMB with another topic or if it could be a standalone. Thank you for joining along!

Can you do a video on understanding where the devices are placed on the ahu from reading the print?
@planandspec
@planandspec 4 ай бұрын
There should typically be an enlarged detail on the drawings of the AHU showing different components / sensors / etc or could be also found in the shop drawings.

Keep up the great work. Do you mind sharing what app/software you use for combining pictures and videos?

Any video editing software should allow you to layer picture/video, I actually use multiple (they all do the same thing). Big names are Adobe Premier Pro or Final Cut Pro.

Need a video for a concrete demo guy like myself on how to find new openings and penetrations on mechanical and plumbing plans. When customers don’t want to give quantities and want me to read their plans.
@planandspec
@planandspec 4 ай бұрын
The easiest way to do this is take the mechanical and plumbing drawings and highlight anytime ductwork or piping passes through a wall (youll see the light gray architectural walls on both drawings). This will give you quantities and sizes. Youll also have to look at floor to floor penetrations using the symbols i talk about in this video. There is no quick way to do this, you just have to go page by page. This doesn't work for electrical because conduit pathways aren't drawn on electrical drawings - hope this helps in the meantime 🫡

@@planandspec your videos have helped a ton. Kind of stuck on finding trenches also. I know that if it’s 1st floor or basement I’ll have a trench but how to I know if something is being hung or the pathway is a trench if it’s not called out?
@planandspec
@planandspec 3 ай бұрын
Trenches won't be shown, you'll have to look at the civil drawings for the grading plan to see finish surfaces as well as elevations of piping. There would be some subtraction to see how far below any piping is + bedding for that piping.

I've realized that I only have one speed, and thats 100 miles per hour. Just kidding, I've gotten this comment quite often - I usually cut dead air in between talking in my final edits to shorten video lengths, but at the expense of going a little faster : / I'll continue to reconsider 😅
