I saw rhis video 2 months ago when it came out and forgot to comment. I really followed this advice and grokked the difference betweem skidding and carving. I have SO much control now over the board this season after focusing purely on skidding as less as I can. 1 year ago, I couldnt navigate my daughter through a bunny hill from a carpet lift. Last weekend, I took her on her first ski lift, had the control to help her all the way down. I even stood as she barreled into me out of control a bit. Last season she was scared to come with me, and only wanted her ski teachers. This season, she wants to come back with me every week ❤ Thank you for your amazing technical breakdowns.

Today was my second day on a snowboard EVER and I am delighted to discover my skills are advancing at an incredible pace... I am already able to link turns at rather high speeds (for my standards) which is satisfies me beyond belief! Yes, I fall frequently but jump right back :) I do not listen to music, since your constant "posture-posture-posture" refrain plays on repeat in my mind. I also keep repeating "Stack your weight to the edge! Look where you are going! Don't dread it!" to myself. Your videos have helped me so very much! Thank you!

I picked up snowboarding after a break of 25 years. Back then I had no idea of carving, so my turns were always skidded. Now I've started to dial in the carve turn. And watching a lot of videos I notice I do way too tight turns for the slopes I'm in. Gotta get the feeling of controlling the speed, not by skidding but just traversing across the slope. Thank you so much for your content!

Malcolm thank you for all the informative videos. You really separate yourself from the others. Talk is easy, but you walk the walk and are a terrific instructor! Im a disabled military vet of the US navy and suffer from severe back pain. While learning in 2005 at age 40 I had a hard fall and wrenched my knee. I retired the board and it sat in the corner of the garage many years. Now at age 58 my mid life crisis is kicking in, Im healed up and back! I have the newer better tech gear now for old guys, volume board😊 supermatics, double boa we didn't have back then. I've been watching your vids and I can honestly say I'm a better rider now. Your very easy to understand and relate to. I love boarding and want to ride as long as I'm physically able. Thanks again man, you rock! Merry Christmas! 😊

This is a great video! Thanks! Watched it during a break on my premiere day and after I was able to carve those pencil lines much much easier. I had a bit difficulty understanding what to do with my knee on my heel turn though. I ended up pushing my front knee in towards my middle/centre of mass during both heel and toe turn and that gave the best turn. When I pushed my knee out/ towards upper front corner I just ended up skidding. So maybe I misunderstood but the feedback from my board was very helpful and yes it was an active riding rather that just passively standing on it, the fatigue in my front thigh is a proof of that. Can’t wait to try bit again tomorrow!

My biggest problem when I go from a skidded/gripped turn to a carved turn is that it feels like I'm on a rail - my board suddenly turns so much more sharply. It almost feels like riding a bicycle in a rut or next to an edge on the road. I get scared coz I feel like I'm losing control of the board and usually fall. Am I just afraid of what's supposed to be the actual/expected feeling, or should I reduce the pressure and/or go down a little lower (i.e. like a down unweighted turn position) and just ride through that on-the-rails feeling? Edited to add: what helped me most to go from skidded to a more gripped turn is your lessons on down unweighted turns - I don't feel as freaked out by higher speed and changes of direction when I lean into turns in that lower position. And that helps make my turns tighter and avoid edge catches.

Can you record a video on progression on what is required to handle green, blue, red (In Poland we have red) and next balck runs? What diffferent techniques are required. I am just starting and can handle our green ones and blue ones, but red ones I feel my turns are too slow. How make them faster? Cheers
@BBQKana11 ай бұрын
As an snowboarder starting my 3rd season I'd say the biggest thing for me has been getting more comfortable with speed. Your turns will be the same, but with steeper runs you pick up speed much faster. If you go too slow you'll be using a lot more muscles when trying to turn.

Hi Malcolm, is it common to struggle much more with carving on the heel side than on the toe side? From heels to toes I can do an early edge change and get it to grip and leave a thin line, toes to heels I can only engage the edge when the board is already pointing down and I really struggle to grip it especially when there isn't a soft snow layer. I think I am a bit concerned with falling on my butt and therefore I don't angle the board enough (?) Thank you for your great videos!
@mingxinwei504810 ай бұрын
Hey, just want you to know that you are not alone. Exact same problem with you
@mingxinwei504810 ай бұрын
I think for a lower edge angle in heel side, you need to make the s shape much bigger to gripe so that it matches the nature of board in lower edge angle.

I feel like I can drive through the back foot on heel side but I struggle to feel that on toe side
@Mianh11 ай бұрын
Hi Malcolm! Thank you for this video - helpful as usual. Question: does the back foot "dig" into the board's edge during the turns too, or is it lifeless, just following the front foot, which has slightly more body weight on it? I struggle with putting too much pressure/weight on my back foot during the top half of the turn, and it is most obvious on toe-side turns, which is never fully carving into the snow but always slightly sliding (more of a gripped turn than a true carving turn). Thanks in advance!!
@malcolmmoore11 ай бұрын
The back foot plays a role yes, absolutely, but don't let it mess up the role of the front foot. In my next video I'm going to be talking about more advanced carving and the role the back foot plays.

I've doubt with Toe side carving no one talks about ( Is it right use calf raises ? like same gym movement or not only the weight on toes, center of mass and hips)?
@malcolmmooreАй бұрын
I don't fully understand your question here, but no you shouldn't be calf raising, your heel will lift, but that is because you are sinking down into dorsi flexion rather than contracting your calf muscle which would actually bring you closer to plantar flexion
@kevinwen488811 ай бұрын
I'm not sure I can understand clearly... What does that mean by top corner vs far corner of the board?

See where the green arrow is pointing. Yes I understand the board doesn't actually have corners, but if you imagine it as a rectangle with 4 corners then it should make sense.
