Jeff I had the same kind of problems with the ceilings in my house. In some rooms they were sloped, in others they were wavy. It always came down to the crappy hand-cut roof trusses twisting, bowing, and separating from the wall top plates. In the rooms I renovated, I removed all the ceiling drywall (because it had crappy skip-trowel texture), and shimmed the truss bottoms until I got within 1/8" of perfect level from corner to corner. Installed new-construction light cans, slapped on new drywall, and the crown moulding looked picture perfect after. It really paid off, I could never get that aesthetic by cutting corners.

You may want to cover rectified vs non rectified tiles. Non rectified tiles may have bowing and inconsistent thickness that will cause lippage when laid in 50/50 subway offset. Wish these vids were available 10 yrs ago could have saved me a lot of trial and error.

First time commenter, long time HUUUUGE fan of yours. I had 0, absolutely NO trade skills up until I turned 30. Now I don't mean to conjure up a sob story for the public to read nor do I want any sympathy but I had no Father growing up which leaves someone with a huge void in basic life skills needed to make life enjoyable and so much easier. Had no confidence in myself because I never could prove myself with no direction. At least until I stumbled onto your channel. First video I watched of yours was drywalling. MY GOD DID I MUD LIKE PURE CRAP! 😆 I put a layer of mud on my first wall a half inch thick and didn't spread it out like I should have. That and it was ridiculously thick. I didn't realize that you couldn't use drywall screws for floors and ceilings... 😕 Which I had already done... I didn't even know that the black screws were generally drywall screws. I thought screws were just screws. So not only are you teaching people something so invaluable, you're making the world a safer place also. Once I got the hang of drywall I desperately got back onto your channel and went right on to the next tutorial video of yours. It's funny when I offer advice to people on topics I've mastered from your channel they'll start talking about some other renovating skill I haven't yet gotten to yet and they'll be like 🤨 "how the hell can you have such good advice on hanging drywall but you have absolutely no idea what a neutral wire is? Better yet, that there are THREE wires when running electrical wire, not 2??" 🤔 I tell them the truth, that I learned it on KZbin and they look at me like I'm just the definition of stupid. It may sound stupid but it's one of the best ways to learn about anything. You just really need to cross reference with the pros in that given field and definitely pay attention to the thumbs up/ thumbs down ratio. Sorry this was so long but I genuinely have to thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me what my dad never did. The only (very trivial) complaint I have is go easy on the "wow what stupid thing the last guy did doing this". You have no idea how many times I've watched your videos and the critique your giving about how dumb the last guy is and it is the literal definition of what I accidentally did in the not too distant past 🤣. I'll feel such shame and feel like an idiot. Anyways, to state the obvious I'm definitely a permanent subscriber and a Jeff fan for life. Keep up the great work and I seriously hope one day you'll have your own TV show. ✌😎👍

Thank you for this channel, my family and I learn so much from your very practical, straight-talking tutorials. We are building a new house, but already have plans to lay thin brick veneer (2cm) over water resistant drywall, in the interior kitchen area only (the backsplash). We live close to the ocean, so rust accumulation due to salt in the air is commonplace. But there's so much information regarding supplies and how to, that we are getting a bit lost in the weeds. For example, mortar vs thin set vs all purpose construction adhesive (we're looking at the latter), should we be using wall ties, do we need a metal lath, etc.? Could you please point us in the right direction?

Working on my kitchen currently and have an unfinished window with no casing. I was going to case my windows before I start tiling but checked this video out. So do you end up adding the window casing on top of the tiles? If so do you use brad nails to nail it in on the casing? Looking forward to the next videos to show those details! Thanks and Love your videos!

Will the diamond blade also work for a marble mosaic tile?

I'm thinking about doing the backsplash in my kitchen using marble tiles. I had someone tell me I will need to put up concrete board first. How accurate is this? I saw you install concrete board in a shower install but not a kitchen backsplash. Thanks for your videos!

marble is too heavy for drywall. Hence the cement board!

Small tip for BEFORE installing wall tile: don't finish your butt joints with tape and compound. No hump makes for a MUCH easier install!

it also sets you up for cracks.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Been 2.5 years since I did my backsplash and no cracks in the grout yet. The mastic behind the tiles is elastic enough to decouple the wall movement from the tiles, just according to what I observe.

Not a fan of two designs using that busy tile w small white frame in between, I think some Spanish style tile on the middle/stove area would have looked better, but will wait and see one you finish the whole kitchen.

How much of that type 1 adhesive do you think I need for a relatively small area about 30 square feet? Thanks!

Hey Jeff was wondering on installing a backsplash with subway 3" by 12" tile in a herringbone style should I use a tile leveling system with the spacers or just use the spacers on it

With a marble pattern like you used, did you have to mix and match different boxes to keep the pattern random?
