You’re correct. From animal crossing wiki. Isabelle is a nearsighted bright yellow dog who resembles a Shih Tzu (this is similar to her Japanese name - Shizue). Her head is also shaped similarly to a bag of bells (hence, the pun on her English name - "Is-a-belle"), meaning "is a bell". She has a happy appearance with rosy cheeks, and white fur patches on her tail and around her mouth.

3 years late but Blathers' and Celeste's names are also puns! There is no "hoo" sound in Japanese, they use 'Fu.' -ta is a common part of Japanese boys names (like Ryota) so his name is literally 'Hoo-ta.' It's commonly translated as "Hooter" which is wrong. Celeste's name 'Hoo-ko' is the girl version of the pun! '-ko' is a common part of Japanese girl names like Hanako. Pretty cool!

2:36 Tanuki’s (Japanese raccoon dog) aren’t raccoons and they aren’t closely related to raccoons either. Tanuki and raccoons are different. Real Japanese words for raccoon is 洗熊(あらいぐま), あらいぐま or アライグマ, and ラクーン. Each word is pronounced as araiguma, araiguma or araiguma, and raku-n or rakuun. From Google: The tanuki is a wild canid species native to Japan that is related to wolves, foxes, and domestic dogs. It's also known as the Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) and is a subspecies of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) that's found in mainland Asia. With its thick fur, masked face, and curious nature, the tanuki has served as a cultural icon in Japanese folklore for centuries. The bushy-tailed animal is known as a mischievous trickster that's shown up in legends and myths as a shapeshifter with supernatural abilities. In popular culture, tanuki can be spotted in Nintendo video games and Studio Ghibli films. Here are eight little-known facts about this fascinating canid species. 1. Tanuki Are Not Related to Raccoons Despite their masked appearance, tanuki are not close relatives of the common raccoon, the famous species native to the United States. Tanuki belong to the Canidae family, alongside wolves and foxes. In contrast, the common raccoon shares more in common with mustelids, a family that includes weasels, badgers, and otters. Their similar appearance could be a case of convergent evolution, where different species evolve to occupy the same ecological niche. They may look similar at first glance, but the two separate species of forest critters have a handful of key differences. Back in the fourth grade, Super Mario Bros. 3 taught me a lot of things. For example, I learned that sometimes the kid on the playground who swears his dad took a trip to Asia and brought back some awesome Nintendo game that’s not out in America yet really is telling the truth. I learned that it actually is possible for a sequel to surpass the original. And I learned that in Japan there’s an animal called the tanuki. As I got older and my knowledge of Japan grew, I found out that, in stark contrast to Tanooki Mario, real-life tanuki aren’t able to fly or transform into invincible statues. As a matter of fact, some of the Japanese-English dictionaries and vocabulary lists I looked at said that tanuki were just raccoons. That translation isn’t entirely accurate, though. Tanuki are technically “raccoon dogs,” classified as members of the family Canidae, making them closer relatives to dogs, wolves, and foxes than they are to raccoons. Still, the visual similarity between tanuki and raccoons is strong enough that it can be hard to tell the two species apart, unless you’ve got a handy guide like this one. ● Head Raccoon: White-edged ears, black stripe running down forehead, white whiskers Tanuki: Black-edged ears, no forehead stripe, black whiskers ● Body Raccoon: 42-60 centimeters (16.5-23..6 inches) in length, bushy stiped tail Tanuki: 50-60 centimeters in length, short tail with no stripes ● Legs/feet Raccoon: Fur on legs matches color of fur on body, five digits allows for skillful gripping of objects Tanuki: Black fur on legs, four digits (like a dog or fox) Of course, while zoologists are familiar with these differences, many laymen, even in Japan, don’t have the discrepancies memorized. As such, it can sometimes be hard to tell if a drawing, produced by an artist instead of a naturalist, is supposed to be a tanuki or a raccoon (even Tanooki Mario mistakenly has a striped tail). So when in doubt, check for the illustrated tanuki’s unmistakable giveaway: massive balls. I would leave a link but KZbin keeps deleting my comment.

I actually bought a region free Japanese version of Animal Crossing Wild World game for my DS recently (last week). Thankfully, someone had already started it (they were still in the tutorial part...6 1/2 years ago). So, that's my introduction in the Japanese language. I've played a bit here and there. I actually like playing Wild World in both English AND in Japanese (I've been playing the English version for a couple of weeks now, so going into the Japanese version wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be, plus Google camera translate helped when I had to bring stuff to certain animals in the tutorial). But writing letters to the villagers in Japanese...no, I certainly can't do that yet.

Tanukis and raccoons are not the same species. The Nooks are referred to raccoons in the English versions of the AC games because tanukis aren't very well known in the US. I do find it strange that Nintendo makes this change while they're okay with Mario's Tanuki suit remaining the same but spelled Tanooki.
