What's really interesting about the Japanese days of the week is that despite their origins being different, the planets are apparently associated with the same days of the week as in Western culture. Sunday and Monday are pretty obviously "Sun Day" and "Moon Day." But if you follow the order out, it holds up. Tuesday (Tiw's Day) was the day of Mars, the planet you call 火星. Wednesday (Woden's Day) was the day of Mercury, the planet 水星. Thursday (Thor's Day) was the day of Jupiter, the planet 木星. Friday (Frigg's Day) was the day of Venus, the planet 金星. Finally, Saturday (Saturn's Day) was the day of Saturn, the planet 土星. So because of my interest in Astrology and Mythology, remembering the Japanese days of the week and planet names becomes easier for me because I know about the associations both the Chinese and the Romans made. Another piece of trivia that's fascinating... the blinking star Algol was considered unlucky by Astrologers in both China and the west. We associated it with the eye of Medusa's severed head, and the Chinese apparently associated it with piled-up corpses or something, but it was considered to be a bad influence everywhere.
@HANSMKAMP8 жыл бұрын
Quite interesting. I just learned the names of the planets and the days in Japanese, without thinking about the relations between the day names and planet names in Japanese!
@nickpatella15257 жыл бұрын
I believe when the Japanese adopted the western calendar, they named their days of the week to parallel those of ours.
@DevinDTV7 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's pretty obvious when you first learn the Japanese days of the week that they must have adopted the western naming scheme. After all, how likely was it that they named the days of the week at all before then? It's a pretty arbitrary thing to do. Did the Japanese even have weeks before adopting the western calendar? Months are an astronomical thing, but weeks are pretty arbitrary.

except that mathematically 7 x 4 is a pretty sound way of breaking up the 28 day lunar cycle (and 14 x 2 is a fortnight) - after all, who wants to work 26 days before a break?

Hi Misa, my name is Julia and I’m a math teacher in a high school in Italy. I love learning languages and I know English well enough to understand movies with no subs, so I needed a more engaging language to learn. I decided to learn Japanese. What a challenge, you’ll think! And it is, because I’m not glad to just learn the language, I’d like to also master the writing and reading :) Japanese at 360 degrees. Also I’ve always been fascinated by “symbols” so math, languages & Japanese writing fit together so well! I’m a total beginner of Japanese but the more I know it the more I love it 💖. I’ve used some apps to learn hiragana and katakana and I’ve to admit they worked quite fine, especially the ones with tests. But for kanji?! They are really horrible. Eventually I found your KZbin channel and WOW I thought, this is gold!!! Misa, you are a talented teacher. I learned in one day three of your lessons about kanji and I remember all of them!!! I especially like the way you present the kanji always linking one to the other. That’s a great way to keep them all in mind. I thank you so much for giving all the examples with the on-yomi and kun-yomi pronunciation. I also enjoy the way you present the lessons in your videos: always so rich of useful information. I think you should do a complete course on kanji to sell, I would be the first to buy it :) Thank you so much for these lessons on KZbin. You are really kind and skilled. Doumo Arigatougozaimasu. Julia from Italy

TY very much. I just finished 1st videos and I'm excited to know you've made up a series. I was struggling to basically get started with it despite the fact it is an extremely hard language.
