All of these tools run within the Wearable Intelligence System (WIS), which is the homepage for your smart glasses with a host of built-in apps, voice controls, always available HUD information, app launcher, and more. The WIS makes building smart glasses applications easy. There's a number of powerful and fashionable smart glasses being released (2022-24), and the WIS gives you an interface and apps to make those glasses useful. The WIS is like your phone homescreen or your computer desktop combined with a smart assistant.
Users benefit from a suite of tools that can be used in the real world while developers benefit from a system that provides a smart glasses app backend.

Yes, I think language learning in classes and self-guided will largely start utilising immersive methods as this tech makes the more feasible to do anywhere.

For me as learning languages over decades, and using AR alldays in Technical Repair Service, my imagination of a AR Language learning support is just in vocabulary, all the other stuff like grammar needs to be teached personally, but to explode the ability to "build you speach in sentences mostly the vocabulary ist to poor".. AR learning of vocubalary has to be done in a mode where I d o not need add. information, but this should be done then in alldays (nonstatic) environment, e.g. during a walk through a city or by shopping, etc. The AR face recognician technic has to identify all objects (phone cell, trash can, bicycle, dooropener, (ok. things lying on a table too), handbag etc. what is moving into the center of the view angle and put the correct vocabulary (maybe 30% opacity) onto it.. No pictures , no Wikis, just seeing all the words for all what in my direct sight, in my e.g. preselected language, and may be chooseble if I am a beginner or higher level (using more polite vocabulary)

Thanks for the feedback! It seems like the "AR Object Recognition Translation" (needs a sexier name, haha) is the use case you want the most. Makes sense that maybe wikipedia is too much info - probably just a very large vocabulary that grows with you as you learn the language is the killer app for smart glasses language learning.

So question what is the best cheaper but good glasses for translating and learning a new language. And the DB allows the more uncommon languages.. Bulgarian..etc..

The cheapest right now is probably XREAL Air and Inmo Air. The best is probably the Vuzix Shield. Most uncommon languages could be supported with some software development.

When actually wearing them, how far in front and how big would you say the square display field is?

The Wearable Intelligence System supports multiple different smart glasses. The glasses used in this video are the Vuzix Blade, with a 20deg FOV (field-of-view) and 480x480px resolution. It's focused at about 2 meters away from oneself.

As a typical user without much GitHub or coding experience, would downloading and "installing" the system be easy enough for me? I'm techy, but indie software can be tricky to get going, I've found. Is there a (current, released, ready now) solution that you know of, that will give translations for text and signs around you in the world?

After more digging, I can see that the supported glasses are currently out of my price range, but hopefully not for too long. I'm really looking forward to giving this a try! International travel would be SO MUCH more enjoyable, with these!

Hey Felaura, YES, you will be able to get the system going, given you have the requisite hardware. It's not difficult to setup and we have detailed instructions here: github.com/emexlabs/WearableIntelligenceSystem#install--use This system is the only system I now of which offers these features. We don't currently support OCR (reading signs) but that could be added easily.

Regarding price range - fair enough, I understand. We are adding support for the Inmo Air, which is about half the price of the Vuzix Blade 1/1.5. Also, we are working on our own pair of smart glasses which will be cheaper and available in 2023.
