In this lesson, we will learn about the metric system and unit conversions. First, we will review what a meter is and how a meter relates to a kilometer. The prefix kilo means thousand, so 1 kilometer equals 1000 meters. Next we review the prefix centi, which means 1/100. This means that there are 100 centimeters in a single meter. Finally, we review the prefix milli, which means 1/1000. This means that there are 1000 millimeters in a single meter. With this information, we can now begin to convert between units by setting up a unit conversion table. This is a powerful technique and in fact using unit conversions can be used to solve a great variety of problems in more advanced classes such as physics, chemistry, and engineering. We will convert between metric units and get practice by solving problems.

Hi, here is how a learned this (a long time ago). The units are (from left to right): Km, Hm, Dam, m, cm, dm, mm. I just work with the shifting the decimal point to the left or to the right. If I have 100.0m to convert I do this: Km Hm Dam m dm cm mm 0 1 0 0. 0 0 0 (I keep the excess zeroes in my mind only - written to ilustrate). To convert to 'cm' I move the decimal point 2 steps to the right: 10000.; to convert to 'Km' I move the decimal point 3 steps to the left: .100. Consider that the decimal point does not occupy a position under a unit of measurement, but it "points" the target unit for you! Square meter to square Km? Move the decimal point to left by 2 steps each time: 10,000m2 = 100Dam2 = 1hm2 = 0.01Km2. Also equal to 1,000,000dm2. Volume? Move the decimal point by 3 steps each time, to the right or to the left: 15,000m3 = 15dam3 = 0.015hm3 = 0.000015Km3 = 15,000,000dm3. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your dedication and commitment as a S.T.E.M. (based) educator. Like (the late) Professor Clayton Christensen and Salmon Kuhn; I know from where I speak because my son and daughter (and others because we are spreading the word about your very low key-admiral delivery as an educator) continue to benefit from educators of your elk, thank you. Please take extra precautions to stay safe in these dystopian times); as your dedication and commitment to other are highly valued, especially now during the increasing necessity for distance learning. As you are well aware that in times of uncertainty folks will flock to invest in value. Perhaps it time that you make a platform move if you have not already done so?

The whole point of the metric system is you just need to move the decimal point left or right. You dont have to do long divisions and multiplications.
@memorizer4941
@memorizer4941 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but this is just an example. In reality you would use this to solve more complex conversions. (I think)
@Andre_XX
@Andre_XX 3 жыл бұрын
@@memorizer4941 There are no complex conversions in the metric system. That is why everybody on earth has adopted the system (with one or two dumb exceptions).

Sorry I should have clarified. Yes it is absolutely true that the metric system is far and above superior to the imperial counterpart. I just meant that this technique in this video can be used well in other not-so-perfect systems (imperial, metric-imperial) conversions.

Easer just to shift the decimal place, this is what we do in the UK 0.1m to 10.0cm to 100.0mm None of that maths stuff no need.
@MathAndScience
@MathAndScience 3 жыл бұрын
Yes of course you can do that but when you get to chemistry or physics the way I taught is vastly superior and will be used for more complex problems where you can’t just move a decimal point. Just trying to teach you the technique early in. Thanks! Jason

That is what I was taught in school but when I went to varsity this started to get complicated cause in Chemistry and physics there’s a lot more complicated conversions and trust me when I say you will not get anywhere with this cram thing and that ”king Henry died “phrase will not help either

So long as imperial units are used throughout the United States, from 1st grade to the Architect's desk to cooking shows, you can forget whining about "everyone should go metric." It doesn't matter if it makes logical sense; it's not going to happen, so long as Americans are taught to use imperial units in our daily personal, scholarly, and professional lives.
@MathAndScience
@MathAndScience 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree. However, I didn't whine that everyone should go metric. I said that metric was a vastly superior system and is used almost exclusively in science, math, and engineering - which is true. I'm doing my part to show everyone how easy it is to work with and over time hopefully will be more widely adopted in the US and elsewhere.
