Wonderful. I studied Mandarin in Taiwan back around 1973-1976, also quite a lot of Min; but I've always had a 'thing' about Shanghainese, which sounds absolutely magical to me. This 6-minute video is THE perfect introduction to it -- as you cover each main point plus all the nuances behind it. Great job!!

I'm Japanese and interested in shanghainese. If possible, I thought it would be nice if you could also add hanzi when introducing Shanghainese spelling.

Most non Shanghainese Chinese find Shanghainese fast and sounded rude, most westerners will feel more at home with Shanghainese because it’s more mono-tonal and multi syllabic. Sounding very Korean or Japanese sometimes. Compared with Cantonese which has 6-9 tones depending and mono syllabic

Hey, I speak shanghainese as well and I'm just a year older than you. I live with my shanghainese family but it's the only source I can get of hearing shanghainese where I live as I live in a only english speaking country. So I relate to your comment so much 😭😭

Awesome video! Please more of them! My Shanghainese sucks and just from this video I learned so much. How about something of the topic "I work in this and that industry or field", "for so and so many years"... always struggle to explain to my uncles and aunts or relatives from Shanghai what I do X)

Thanks for the lesson Lily! Looking forward to seeing more. It would also be helpful to see more situational dialogues if you have a friend/family member who can speak Shanghainese with you for more advanced students. I already know Mandarin and want to brush up on Shanghainese so just listening with Shanghainese and having English or Chinese subtitles would be more useful for me. But I will take what I can get since there is so few resources out there. Once again thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

I want to learn how to say these sentences in Shanghainese: 1. Hello my name is […]. Nice to meet you. 2. I won mahjong. So happy! 3. What are you doing? 4. I broke my new lipstick. So sad. 5. That man is talking to much.

I find your compliment offensive. You are stereotyping Asians as speaking poor English or with an accent. Why shouldn’t she speak good English? I am Asian born in America and speak English without an accent. I don’t find people who are surprised with that.
