I knew this back in the ‘90s but had forgotten most of it. It was cool to play the chords shapes and then say, “Oh yeah , I remember that!” Thanks for helping an old player work through the fogs of time, lol!

Very educational, David! Riviera Paradise was a breakthrough SRV blues song with a pronounced flair of jazz! I love the 7aug9 to 7dim9 chords turnaround to the minor root chord! The Cmaj7 pull offs to a Cm7 are classic! Gmaj7 to the B6 walking down a whole step at a time to the ii-V-I is wonderful composition! Thank you for breaking it down into bite sized chunks! Well done!

@@EpicGuitarInstruction Ill look into it :) also i have a question about one of the chords. around 6:30 you say its an A6 chord? why is it not a Amaj 7? it shares the same shape and notes except the a string and e strings which would be both A if you barred it.

Thanks for that. Very easy to understand, gets right to the nuts/bolts. I saw a doc recently where the producer talked about recording this one and the tape literally ran out as the last note faded. He was in the control room sweating bullets and trying to get their attention to wind it up.

Thx so much! Awesome lesson, cleared up a bunch of voicing stuff. One suggestion I might add: while soloing, rather than just playing whole thing in E pent minor, try following the chord progression (key center changes) and solo "over the changes" in D, then C, then Bb before playing E minor over the turnaround. Sounds much jazzier!

You demonstrate the chords better than any I've seen ! Saw Stevie three times in Austin . Just about the most beautiful song I've ever heard . I was going home from Dallas to Austin the day of his funeral at Laureland and I drove by as the funeral was just beginning and was going to stop and go out to the service , but there were no parking spaces . So I drove on out to IH35 going south to Austin . As I drove over the on ramp I looked back towards the large group of people and there was no movement from this crowd of people they were all it seemed, as if at prayer . When I got into town later that day I watched the local tv coverage of the funeral . They showed this same moment that I had seen and it was the moment in the service when Bonnie Raitt , Eric Clapton , Jackson Browne were singing "Amazing Grace " . I had seen his last Austin performance the previous spring . He was truly the most amazing guitarist I ever saw . RIP Stevie Ray .

Great lesson! Minor nit: the chord that looks like F# minor over G is actually a G dominant 13th chord, you can see his fingering in his live performances. It gives it a bit more tension for sure.

Nice lesson! U learned me something. For years i've been playing the the 6 chord with a far more complicated fingering. There is no way to smoothly transition. I would have to quickly grab the bass note of the chord whilst setting up the other fingers. Never felt right. I never even considered playing the chord with the fingering you show. DUH! Thanks man! What gear u using? Guitar, pickups, amplification? Really SWEET strat tone!

Hi and thank u for checking out this lesson and for your kind words - most appreciated. Fir this lesson the guitar in a mid 1990s all stock and original Fender Strat MIM - made in Mexico. Those mid 90s strats came stock with some killer hot pickups. And in the lesson the tones are from the neck and middle pickup - position 2. The amp is a Fender combo deville 2x12 on the clean channel with a splash of amp reverb - thats it - simple setup. And be sure to take a good look around the channel as we have tons of killer lessons and songs taught in the same format - lots of fun stuff. At 5:07, the G string note on the last chord of the intro is 8th fret (Eb), not 9th fret. I.e. where you say, "it [the E note on G string] goes back," that should be Eb. On the studio original take, I also hear an Ab (a G when SRV plays it w/ his 1/2 step down tuning). In that case, that last chord would be frets 11, 10, 8, 7, 7 on strings 5 - 1. Watch the "Live in Amarillo, Texas" video on a big screen at 50% speed and you'll see SRV stretch to grab that 5-string chord.
