I'm a Vietnamese. OMG after visiting Thailand once and starting to watch some Thai TV channels on my satelline TV network, I don't know why I love Thai language so much..... Even my dad told me crazy because Thai isn't a popular language, I wanna learn it so bad. However, it's pretty hard to find a Thai class which teaches a person who doesn't study at a language university (I'm studying law) like me in Vietnam....

Same thing goes to Vietnamese, "mã" means "horse" in Vietnamese, although we only use this word in certain contexts because this word is Chinese loanword.

Horse in Thai is "mah" with a high tone, in Chinese it is also "mah" but the tone is rising. If you say "mah" with a rising tone in Thai it means "dog". This makes Thai roll on the floor with laughter when they meet somebody from China named "Ma" meaning horse but of course they only do it in their heads, would not be polite to laugh in their face !!! Thais repeat "Ni Hao Ma" in Chinese which comes very close to meaning "This dog howls." in Thai. More laughter. Thai like to laugh !!

The first time I watched this I thought it was really hard. Thai is very foreign to me and I had already decided it was too difficult. But after I listened for a while it's not hard. I've already learn several alphabets and foreign languages, so I was like "How hard can it be?" It's all a mind game. Watching this again it's not hard at all. Can't wait to get better and use it in thailand next year!

Scared by the comments that say Thai is much difficult than Chinese is. I actually speak Chinese pretty well and also study Korean (I am Russian btw). I find them really just okay to study. Anything seems to be easier after you've dealed with Chinese, haha. So years passed and now I think Chinese is so easy to learn. Even Korean can be more difficult than Chinese because of that crazy grammar. But if you guys say Thai is more difficult than Chinese, Korean and Japanese... Gosh. Challenge accepted though.

There's some similar grammar and words but.. after learning characters that are like a little image that makes sense, for me a language with alphabet seemed harder for a moment because there was nothing to help me to learn words, no clue what the word means, it's just a sound. But in chinese it was an image so I got used to think with pictures.

Thai is much easier when it comes to grammatical structures: Thai has no verb conjugation, no genders, no plural forms, no tenses, etc. The overall grammar rules are quite consistent too - fewer surprises and exceptions. The basic sentence structures are similar to English in many aspects, unlike Korean.

Thai is a VERY vowel oriented language like Spanish, Italian, Japanese, etc. English and Chinese words are all consonants and sound like a box of rocks to Thai, kind of like German sounds to an English speaker. Thais have an ear for vowel sounds that is quite extraordinary, for instance when an American says it is "haht" outside, high in temperature, and British say it's "hawt", the Thai hear them as two COMPLETELY different words, as different as banana and crankshaft. Thais hear the vowels MUCH more readily than the consonants which gives them their unique accent when they speak English. English is a consonant language, you can change the vowels quite massively and still be understood, listen to an Aussie some time! You cannot change the vowels in Thai! If you say the vowel right Thais can guess what you saying if you get the tone wrong, easy to do. Yes, Thai has five tones compared to Mandarin's four but Thai doesn't have anywhere near as many one syllable words as Chinese. And Thai has none of the crunchy hard to pronounce consonants that Chinese has. The only hard sounding consonant in Thai is the CH sound like in chicken. The key to learning Thai is a good transliteration of the alphabet - Gordon H. Allison's is almost perfect. The Thai government's official transliteration is terrible and AUA's is awful unless you can already read the International Alphabet.

I just wanted to say thank you for this. I got a job in Thailand and will be moving there next month. For me, learning the alphabet of a language is essential to learning the language. From my own personal experience, just "talking with people" is very limited. Like everything in life, get the fundamentals, and then mastery will come. After 8 minutes, I know more than I did when I woke up this morning, and I can think you for that. You're an excellent teacher and have broken this up in a very logical way. Ya, I agree with u, when I learned Japanese, my friends said Japanese is difficult, but seems easy than Thai, maybe I should start with Thai drama or music to learn this language.

phan tram I'm Thai and let me explain something because I'm learning Japanese too.You know that the grammar of Thai and Japanese is completely different.Thai is almost the same to English, S+V+Obj, but not for Japanese,Verb is put in the end of sentense. So I think Japanese is too hard for me.
