In order to put this clip together, I thought to myself "If I were to be learning Thai from scratch again, what advice would I give myself?" -
I tried to make it applicable to anyone learning Thai - from someone just wanting to impress the wait staff at the local Thai restaurant, to expats and even diplomats who will be posted in Thailand and need Thai to effectively communicate.

In the beginning, I would simply try to learn 3 new words a day, and review words from the previous days. This is an extremely lazy way to learn. It takes only about 20 minutes a day. Over the course of a year, it can add up to over 1,000 words. Were there times I got bored or felt burned out? Yes, many times. If you feel that way, then take a break for a day or two. I've taken breaks as long as a month before. Come back your study routine when you feel ready again. Now I've been learning for over 4 years. I'm still not yet at Stuart's level of fluency, but I can read and have conversations with anyone in Thai. The point is, even if you're lazy like me, stick with it for the long term and you'll eventually have success.

This is a great technique actually. I used it for piano. I made sure to learn one new song per day and practiced my previously learned songs every day (as the collection grew I did not have time in a day to practice ALL previously learned songs every day). I reached a 1000 songs, which was my goal, over 3 years and then stopped. With this message, I realize I should do the same with Thai! Thank you!

Then 3 weeks ago I tried LearnThaiFromAWhiteGuy materials to memorise consonants and tones, which is amazingly useful as you mentioned in the vid. Thanks to Brett's program I did crack the tone system for the first time in my life. Now I've just started Glossika after checking your vid, and I already know that it works perfect to my needs (A1 low lvl). Thank you so much Stuart !

Been here for years.. I've come to the conclusion.. Learning a language is a great litmus test for a person's intelligence. All the smart people I know picked up the language Quickly. I'm not that sharp , so it's been a struggle. The other aspect is ; all the mates who picked it up lived with thai girls.. There's no real tricks.. If you're not that sharp, it will be a struggle.. Been here 30 years..

I regularly give public speeches in Thai after being in Thailand for only three and a half years. I learnt Thai by listening to videos on KZbin from Kruu Wee, from Thai with Mod, Thai for beginners and by spending so much time with people who only speak Thai. I don't even particularly like the language (I don't dislike it either) but I think it's respectful towards the locals to speak their language instead of forcing to speak mine. Spend time with Thais and learn to also think like them, that's how you can speak like them. Language and culture are indissociable. And yes: language needs to INFEST your life. It's such a difficult endeavour that you need to aggressively attack it head on.

After living in Thailand for about 8 years and messing around with language courses based on our own alphabet, I discovered a computer based resource, High Speed Thai, in 2013. That re-set the whole thing, starting with only working with Thai alphabet. It took a bit of effort but very quickly the results were really satisfying and empowering. Now back in the UK the last 7 years, any time I go back to Thailand I spend the month before brushing up on that old course and it all comes flooding back. I love it.

Truer words have never been spoken, I learned English through music and movies apart from formal classses. It really helped me a lot cuz it developed my love for English. In my country learning English is mandatory, so when you're forced to learn something, it takes out the fun in learning them. Meanwhile, for Thai it's the other way around. I fell in love with Thai dramas (BL dramas specifically hahaha) and their culture first and that motivates me to learn the language but i kinda took the wrong first step as I tried to remember Thai word by word and the romanization often confuses me for example the word for fish in Thai is 'ปลา' and romanized as 'pbla' so i dunno whether it's supposed to be pronounced as 'pla' or 'bla' so I gave up altogether. But because of the MCO, I had too much free time, so i decided to take up Thai again but this time i decided to learn from the ground up, I spent two weeks remembering the consonants and vowels and also familiarising with Thai symbols such as 'อ้ ' and 'อ็' and this is the hardest part but once you remember all of it things will get easier as Thai letters will automatically tells you how to pronouce the word. In fact i dare say English pronounciation is harder to predict than Thai for example 'But' and 'Put' both have the vowel 'U' but sounded differently, in Thai you won't come across this problem. Entering my third week learning Thai, I can read the caption on my favourite Thai celebrities' IG now but I still got a long way to go

stephen fein hi, I’m mixed between southern and the western (of Thailand). I would say that despite that, I almost never talked with the southern dialect, even when I am in the southern dialect speaking regions. This is because we totally understand each other and although I don’t speak that dialect language, I can understand most of the time they speak (well, not that frequently but if I tried to put my common sense into it, I can partially understand more of the things).

Yeah, you have to realize it's gonna be a long way😉 Our brain tends to be lazy at times and if we do not enjoy it we just get disgusted or annoyed by all the long process of learning. It's about your motivation and your feelings to the language too. Make it fun and do not hesitate to laugh at yourself how funny you sound😁 I often enjoy speaking thai with Lao people when travelling and it makes me feel relax and I learn Lao language a bit by this way too. Regarding teachers and language resources, exactly as Stuart says, use everything and anything in your learning process. . . and trust your guts! If you feel like that try it and if it does work for you just stop andfind another way. There are not so many resources for Thai as for e.i. Mandarin chinese but you can find them and some of them are really good and even free. Everyone is an individual so something that works for me doesn't work for you or just a little bit. Regarding "tones" if you compare a few males(or females) sounds saying the same word they will sounds so different to your ears so as Stuarts says you need to speak to lots of natives and use plenty of resources and definitely do not rely on your teacher only. You must find your way and learn with love😇

I fell in love with Thai when I visited the country in 2015. The language was challenging (still is) and is extremely fun to speak. I don't like learning how to read and write it because it gives me a headache. HAHAHA.

And the learners should know that Farang is shortened from Farang-sade (ฝรั่งเศส) which is derived from Français(e) ... yes, French. And if you learn Thai alphabet and Thai phonology you would know why Français(e) becomes Farang-sade. The reason Thais call the whites (or rather Europeans) collectively as French is because of the prominent presence of French people in Thailand / Siam during Ayudhya period - supposedly the close relationship with France’s Louis ✌️😉

You have to learn how to read Thai; I learned along time ago but I got lazy; can still klunk my way through. You use the sounds of Thai script to say things in Thai perfectly, and a very good example is Pattaya and Phuket, which are quite long words in English but much shorter words when written in Thai script. In Thai script phuket is actually poo-get (ภูเก็ต).

I'm looking for a system of learning Thai that is similar to the one used in South Africa for teaching Afrikaans to English-speaking school children. They use readers (books) that start in very basic Afrikaans using 100 words in their first book with English meanings listed. The books get progressively more advanced from book one through book six.

you can go to jcademy.com - it's available as the standalone 'Indic Script Compass', or in the tools for the Cracking Thai Fundamentals course. It's free - you just need to set up an account and login and you can access it.

What’s your advice for learning how to read Thai? What do you think are the best resources if I want to start off by learning to read before learning to speak? Or do you think they both should happen at the same time? I’m just asking because I’m more of a visual followed by auditory learner so I feel like it’ll be easier for me to learn in this way but I was wondering what your thoughts are since this is the first language I’m attempting to learn.

I would say do what you feel is best for you. Personally, I think that learning to speak first is the best way. Forget tones and reading, as that can all come later. I feel it can be too intimidating for people to try too much at once. Learn like a child learns their native tongue; speak, then read and write. You will make mistakes, of course, but Thai people will understand in context what you mean. Then, when ready, (after 6 months or so maybe) learn the alphabet (Learn Thai from a White Guy is good, and video on youtube that teaches 25 most common consonants for free, then learn the rest yourself, don't give the guy 100 dollars ;0). Then, read children's books. I learnt from this site : ressources.learn2speakthai.net/ These are kids stories that Thai children used to learn in school about a brother & sister and their friends and pets called "Manee Mana." Similar to a "Jack & Jill" in English. When you start to learn the words/ phrases you can already speak is awesome! Then, not so awesome is realising that you have been saying them wrong, incorrect tones etc .. so, you have to re-learn them the correct way. Depending on your ear, you may have been saying them correct. I know a guy that cannot read or write, but you would swear he could as has all th tones etc correct already. As SJR says, use lots of resources. I use the Paiboon dictionary app & the excellent "Learn Thai" app from Codegent that you can change male/female speaker. You can learn words & phrases & play it whilst in the shower, making food etc Immerse/ absorb Do at least an hour a day. Watch youtube videos, my favourites are: "Learn Thai with Mod," kzbin.info "Kruu Wee Teach Thai" kzbin.info/door/CNPGGH7lguWWeFiHTp-OtQ & "Speak Thai Easy" kzbin.info/door/pN4LJgM6Tvr_iaectfiTjg Don't give up & don't compare yourself with anyone else, only yourself the day before. ขอให้สนุกนะครับ Enjoy

Yes! Learning to read is so important. A lot of learning resources that use romanization seem to base it on British English, and as an American, it can be hard to wrap my head around. เธอ becomes ‘ter’ and with me being American, I pronounce it differently.
@danielm.4346
@danielm.4346 Жыл бұрын
Hello. The romanization is a littte of help at the very beginning. But after the very beginning, it is not learning Thai. Look at the writing while you listen. And eventually your brain shall figure it out. It shall come to you what means what, without your having made any effort to figure it out. This what happened for me. I hadn't looked at any of my study material for almost a whole year, then looked at it again, and it was immediately visible, knowable, what parts of the written Thai language meant what in sound. Except for words where the spelling is historical. The entire understanding of wasn't wholly complete, but the whole gist of it was definitely obvious (to me). Years ago, I had been interested in learning Thai, and something from having seen the writing had caused me to think that it was too complicated, that I could never learn it, but that was only like causing a mental block for myself. Learning to read Thai is not something that comes from reading a romanized version of Thai writing. The Thai writing system, aside from where the spelling is historical, shows perfectly what the words are supposed to sound like.
