The Rideau valley authority prevented one of my clients from building their dream home. Arrogant Treatment of good citizens for no reason! They owned the property for decades, had a trailer on it no problem. The water level never went that high but we designed a basement to a water flow code in place!

The information you gave in this video is a gem for me! Thank you for your efforts! I will be joining uOttawa as a PostDoc early next year and was worried about the rents in Sandy Hill area. Now, since the city is laid out efficiently and there seems to be a good transportation network, I will look for cheaper places - perhaps more near to the nature - which are also affordable!

Hey Peter, tks for the content, it is very helpful!! I am considering moving from Poland to Ottawa at the end of this year. My wife will be a PhD student at Ottawa Univ and I will need to find a job. So we will come on a budget. Knowing the high cost of living in the city, where would you thing to be the best cost-benefit neighbourhood? Maybe is better to be downtown and avoid cost with transportation? or better to pay less in the suburbs and commute to public transport? or maybe gas+parking? Would really love your input on that. Kaleb, thanks for the support and comments. It depends - will you be buying or renting? If buying smaller towns offer easy commute times to the city but are still affordable. You mentioned artists in Altamonte. The home prices look very high. Where would you recommend for emerging landscape artists on a budget? Any areas closer in to the Ottawa River such as Vanier, Gloucester, and Orleans...or maybe down by Brittania Bay? Not focused on raising a family. More interested in easy access to bike trails, nature, cafes, galleries, and so forth. This is a wish list. :) Or should I just aim to move to Renfrew as Patrick Mills did?

Almonte has a variety of visual artists for sure - if Almonte is too much you can always explore Carleton Place or Arnprior even Pakenham or White Lake area as they are in close proximity and a little easier on the budget. Still allows you to travel throughout the Ottawa Valley connecting with other art communities.

Barrhaven is a great suburb in Ottawa. Great for families and working professionals. They are creating a central business area to provide more work / life balance based on the City of Ottawa's 15 neighbourhood vision. In the area you can shop, golf, nature trails, dine out, etc. But Ottawa is not a overly large city so you can easily have Barrhaven as your base of operation and take in all Ottawa has to offer while living there or staying there depending on your situation.

Hello Arlette! Happy to help. Alta Vista is a great area - first established as a smaller neighbourhood in the 50' and 60' it is now a popular spot for families and working professionals. Hosing prices have increased significantly in the area as it is popular with it's location to key areas in the city. The area just South of Walkley near Herongate is a separate neighbourhood all together. Reach out to us if you need anything.

Hey I’ve been planning to move to Ottawa from India as an international student but I’ve got some questions and you seem like the best person to ask out there.... Soo Q1. Which institution has the best reputation to get better job prospects among University of Ottawa, Algonquin College etc? Q2. Does French play a major role in landing a job (part time or full time)? Q3. As Ottawa is the capital of Canada and the biggest employer is probably the government, is it hard for non-canadians to land a government job? I’ve heard they prefer Canadians first and that may become a huge problem in landing a job

Hello Swastik. Happy to help in anyway. Q1: it depends on which career you want to end up in. For example, if journalism or Engineering is something you aspire to than Carleton University offers one of the best programs out there. If Law is more focus, University of Ottawa offers one of the largest schools/programs in the Country. If trades, multimedia or social media than it's hard to beat Algonquin College offering. Some take focus on a degree in one area and compliment with additional training from another institution. It all depends on where you want to end up Q2: French can influence your decision making. If you are looking for permanent position in Government of Canada as you move up the ladder into management French will be required but there are other senior positions in different industries/verticals that being bilingual is an asset but not a requirement Q3: I am unsure of this one - I would defer this question to one of my trusted experts. I would suggest reaching out to YMCA Youth Employment Centre as they have extensive contacts and resources in the immigration field. You can reach out to them at [e-mail] I hope this helps. Living in Ottawa Wow thank you for the response it means a lot and i am looking forward to do programming (Computer Science). It’s a back end job and I doubt french would be a requirement until i know my computer languages good. Just needed advice which institution to choose to pursue it and what would be the rate of rooms around it (I’d be looking for individual room). Sites like kijiji.com said around $400-600 but i just wanted to be sure. Thanks a lot

Algonquin (from my understanding) does offer a strong program in computer languages and the tuition is a little more competitive than the universities. As for room rentals this is a growing trend as rents continue to rise in Ottawa. We are seeing $600-$900 for room rentals across the city. Best of luck!

Hi, is ellwood good neighbourhood to raise a family with young kids and teen agers. Are schools good there? I live in Toronto. Thinking of moving there in future.

Hi Fatema. Ellwood borders on three different neighbourhoods of Ridgemont, Alta Vista, Riverside Park among some other industrial areas. It is near Ridgemont which is an older established neighbourhood. Mix of renters and home owners. It's also a mix of residential and industrial. With access to public transit. The area to the East of Ellwood is Riverside Park which is more residential less rental and less industrial. As it borders on various neighbourhoods it is difficult to gauge the exact stats on crime and education but it is a relatively safe neighbourhood but certainly on par with the average crime rates and education - not below it like the suburbs provide and certainly better then same of the rougher spots. Is there a specific neighbourhood you are interested in that I can pull data for you?

The house in Ottawa very expensive now, and quite crazy, the agent can sell the house over prices from 300K up to 700K and may be more, the buyer from Toronto or some where else out side Canada, they even pay off by cash, the peoples who live in Ottawa with minimum income can not get pre-approval mortgage from Bank they can not afford to purchase the house for 300K, also middle of Covid Pandemic, no jobs , Hi-tech slow down, How and what happen to Ottawa? it very crazy, hope the market not crackdown, if it does some one will lose a lot of moneys to investment in real estate of Ottawa.
