The Classical Dutch is a exciting opening that favours the brave and fearless chess player.
During my career as a Grandmaster I have used this opening to defeat such Grandmasters as Boris Gelfand, Ivan Sokolov and Radoslaw Wojtaszek to name but a few.
In this video I have aimed to cover the main points to remember in the opening and hopefully after 25 minutes viewing you will confidant enough to give the Classical Dutch a whirl!

What I like with Simons tutorial videos is that he always explains the idea behind moves and openings. And with that you never really get out of book.

It's so funny hearing Simon attempting to sound like a normal chess player when all his fans know he is far from it. Love the guy!😂

You really are quite a good teacher, Simon. It would be ideal if I were a better student. Even so I learn a lot from you. Thanks

The dynamic pawn structures really remind me some critical lines in the Slav and Catalan I learned years before. This is great.

Tigran Petrosian had an excellent record against the beloved Dutch, is it worth covering some of his games where he managed to break it open?

Noticing that a lot of Dutch games start with 1. d4 e6 which could go side-winder (along non-Dutch lines) with 2. e4.

Why didn't you show what's best after bishop takes e4 with a tempo on the rook instead of b takes c5 which is fairly passive ,if bishop takes e4 you would of had to move the rook and still loose the pawn no? That's why I wished you showed it.

If you're doing any more videos for chesspub, might I suggest the Gleizerov variation of the Tarrasch French as a subject? I haven't delved into it much, but iirc you say on your French dvd that you don't play it anymore - and since it looks very enterprising it would be nice to know what's wrong with it!

I know this is off-topic but have you heard about the Nesjmetdinov-gambit in the Siesta-variation of the Ruy Lopez? I ask because many chess-players doesn´t seem to know about it. I have only seen it described in Jakov Estrin´s little red book about gambits. 64 pages long, published in 1982 and bears the title "Gambitplay in chess". At least that´s what the title would sound like in my native language Danish. I´ve asked other chessplayers and I´ve wondered why they´ve never heard about it despite the fact that they actually know Estrin´s old book. Even more strange is it that the chess-engines doesn´t seem to know it either. Siesta-variation YES but NO to Nesjmetdinov-gambit.

Curious: Would you say the Classical Dutch is more positional or more tactical? Or, in-between? Another question, why does black play Nd4? It seems like black is moving the same piece twice. Well, thanks in advance!
@steveleopold6476
@steveleopold6476 3 жыл бұрын
Tactical. And Ne4 is played because black is lacking space so getting rid of the f knight would make space for the other black pieces

How do I play against Bg5? like in this game: lichess.org/CD9d22kt#13 or if Bg5 comes earlier to pin my knight and bishop. Is the Bishop on e7 more valuable than the knight on f6? I know in Simon's variation he likes to trade the knight on f6-e4 with the c3 knight etc but usually retains the bishop on e7..so I'm wondering how to play against a white player that likes to pin in this kind of position x_x anyone that knows, I would really appreciate it, thanks :)

You have too many spectators on your queen side. Your queen side bishop, knight, and rook are setting there watching the battle for too long.
