This is a great video thanks for making it. I don't know if this is of any interest to you but this idea has been kicking around KZbin for a while, especially around Barry Harris related content. You are the first major KZbin guitar person that I have seen discuss it. If you get the chance it is worth checking out Jazz Guitar Scrap Book's video titled Changes concept 3: making scales musical with Scalepeggios (tm) and the comments below it. I think a lot of jazz musicians arrive at this point at some point in their understanding of music theory because once you 'see' the 'the circle of thirds' approach, even inadvertently, you can't unsee it. Oddly I don't think I have ever seen it in the theory books I used when I was learning. I am very interested in how musicians arrive at organising the major scale in this way and why they do and how profound or even mundane the discovery is to them personally. I would really love to talk to someone about this subject if you are ever inclined. Don't worry I won't be offended if you prefer not to, but it might be worth considering talking to someone like Jazz Guitar Scrapbook about the history of this approach. It might make for interesting content. In any event, I have been thinking about music theory for over twenty years and had I seen this video way back in the beginning I think it would have saved me a lot of time and confusion. Judging by the comments below it is an welcome epiphany for many people so I thank you again for taking the time to help others better understand music.

This was a super really good lesson. I watched the original video where you went off on this tangent, and this one is even better than the original! Thank you sincerely for helping me understand. I actually look forward to noodling around with this stuff on my guitar now instead of dreading it. Amazing.

Thank you! This is much appreciated 👍 I don't understand it completely yet, but it definitely helps grasping music theory. As a teenager I played classic guitar (on a Spanish guitar), it's now 30 years later and I started playing again. This time on an electric. Since I forgot everything and I never really understood in the first place, I have set myself the goal of understanding music theory before trying to learn chords. It's been a month now and I'm feeling comfortable the way this is going. But admittedly it's only because of you, I don't think I saw it so well explained somewhere else.

You are the God of Music Theory. I’ve learned (and understood) more chord theory from the three videos of yours that I have watched so far than all the other theory lessons, books and videos I’ve used over MANY years of playing the guitar. Who knew that Modes could actually make sense! I’m really enjoying music theory for once! I may have to buy your book! 🤣

Incredible lesson. His book is amazing. Ive had it about 3 months and to see each lesson explained is a perfect way to learn theory .. best book on guitar and theory ive bought in the 50 years of playing. Upper extentions and modes explained so perfect. Chord building explained better than my guitar teacher. KZbin and people like Ricky show us things we had no idea of in the 1970s. Thanks Ricky

Man, you made something very complex look surprisingly simple. Congrats! I wish the folks who decided upon the greek names for modes had a system like yours :) One question though, sorry if my question is basic: all that you explained uses as example the CMajor scale, what would change if we wanted it on Cminor? Example. If the scale is Cminor, would the rule still be I ii iii IV V vi viiº ? and the order DFACEDGB?

Trying to understand practical application here, specifically in the context of lead guitar here, say I'm playing over a backing track in the key of A and the progression moves from I to IV, if I play A Ionian then D Lydian, I'm using the same 7 notes, so is there any extra work I need to do (highlight the colour notes, maybe start on the D root?) or will the context of the backing track alone give those notes a Lydian sound/feeling?

I'm looking at someones take on the old (I think it's a Jazz Standard) Song "I Hear A Rhapsody" and trying to figure out the chords since all they give is the Chord formula Label - Like A-6b5 etc...and I get to a "C alt" chord. What does that mean ? I'm guessing that you just get to pick whatever "extension", (now that I know what to call them.) I guess a 9th, an 11th or 13th or some variation thereof. I settled on a C7#9 because it sounded good in the context. I guess that's what your supposed to do.

So, if I understand correctly, according to the circle of 3rds, 7-chord has actually two different chords inside. For example: C maj7 (CEGB) = C (CEG) + Em (EGB). I'm confused.

I was with you until you said this: “If you don’t understand key signatures, you can’t play in every key” For some reason, this irks me. Maybe it’s because I have trouble with understanding theory on paper (though I do like the way you’ve been presenting these concepts). I have a some practical applied understanding of these concepts, but I’m having trouble learning it on an intellectual level. For example I’m able to transpose chords of a song to another key if somebody asks for the song to be played in a different key, I work it out on the fret board but I don’t necessarily understand it on an intellectual level about what’s going on. I guess I just need somebody to show me on the guitar itself. For some reason it makes more sense to me if it’s shown that way. This is not meant as a diss. I’m just throwing out my thoughts and expressing my own frustrations . 🙏🏻
