I'm like your dad, have been living out of NYC for decades, thus my accent is slight. But, when I talk to family, who still live there and have a much thicker accent than mine, I find it slips out when I'm talking to them. Being a woman, I think the NY accent is too masculine; so, I did make an effort to soften, lose as much of it, as I could.

The accent also changes wildly from person to person. Like some people have the italian ny accent which sounds different from the Bronx/Jewish NY accent which sounds different from the Jersey Accent which is different from Long Island. Some people have really heavy accents, some people you couldn't even tell were born and raised in the city. The one thing that always gives it away is how they say the words "walk" or "talk". If you here "wawk" or "tawk" then they are from the NYC tristate, even if the rest of their accent is otherwise standard.

Another variant of the accent I really love is the accent Fran Drescher has in "The Nanny". It's just immaculate. Then we have "The King of Queens" and "Seinfeld". I'm born and raised in NY 40yrs and lived in ALL 5 boroughs here. It's such a hit and miss with these BK NY accent videos. So for example The Italian community which is a SMALL part of BK as a whole speak like this with this intensity. Black, Spanish, Asians ... non Italian do not SOUND like this in BK and African Americans/Ppl of color make up the majority of BK especially the Islanders. However we do say Playin', Sayin ,The au/aw sound & many things in this video but the dialect is different its more Urban and not "Italian". Notice every BK accent video try to look "Italian". Overall to the Accent Sage :) this is good for actors like myself needing to chime in to the stereotypical view of us here... and u did a great job and its very entertaining. But to you all If y'all come here to NY/BK talking like these videos we gonna look at you funny if ur not Italian, and know ur not from NY because most ppl in 2023 don't talk like this. It's old skool... like someone speaking from the 90s in 2023. It's more slang, and Urban dialect with every good point in this video vs The Goodfellas and A Bronxtale.

Thats GREAT, Jayne! Where's the production? What's your role?

The over-the-top accent modeled here is shuffling away from us, rounded out like other regional accents because of mass communication. However, if you pronounce "Mary, Marry and Merry" three different ways, you might be a native New Yorker.

Great video! Thank you so much. Question, the examples you provided for "The 'AWE' sound gets stretched out further in the lower part" are both following an L sound. Is it the (somewhat darker) L sound that's causing that "w" before the "aw"? Thanks !!
