appreciate the detail in describing the hook mechanics, hoping i can practice them soon :) looking forward to the backspin hook video!

Thank you, Matt for sharing your knowledge. Great advice. That kick you create is massive, though your wrist motion is very subtile. I've been doing it far too obviously until now. Right now it's almost 11pm here. But I'm surely gonna practice this tomorrow. Gonna let you know how it went. Thanks again✌️

Thx Matt. Your video are so useful, really and I barely find on YT explanations so clear about how to hit the ball. I would like to ask you if it would be possible in your opinion to add that snap (thumb+finger you refer in other serve videos) also in this serve. For example at the moment 3:43 when you are just to hit the ball, could you add a snap down2up (the bat in vertical position, perpendicular to the table) rising quickly your wrist? I just thinking about it. Thx in advance
@MHTableTennis4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible to do it that way, but I find you get a lot more topspin kick doing it the way I demonstrated. The good thing about serve is that you can take different concepts and be creative, so don't be afraid to try things and find what works for you :)

Thanks Matt. My hook usually carries lot of back spin with some side. I'll try your technique to impart some top on it from now on.

It's good to have backspin variation so that's a positive!

Many thanks for the super explanation and demonstration! I am wondering whether I should try to practice this rather as a short (2 bounces on the other side) or as a fast and long serve? Do you have any tips for good placements?
@MHTableTennis4 жыл бұрын
If you can control it well short and disguise it well then yes, definitely recommend that. Fast and long I tend to go for body or corners unless I spot a particularly weak area elsewhere.

Hey Matt, thanks for the video! I'm somewhat of a beginner/early intermediate player, and I've been struggling to learn the hook serve for some time now. I have two main questions after watching your video: Where on the ball are you contacting it? How are you contacting the ball? From the video (6:49), it seemed like you were saying to contact the ball on the bottom, and then, after you've made contact with the ball, accelerate around it such that your racket angle changes from horizontal (parallel to the table surface) to more perpendicular to it (vertical). However, I don't think I could ever get such an enormous amount of acceleration or dwell time on my racket to perform such a complex contact. Is it just a matter or practice or am I misunderstanding something? Also, when you contact the ball, are you moving your arm away from you (parallel to the end line of the table) or are you bending towards the net? And how does the motion you demonstrate at 8:39 play into that since your racket angle starts horizontal?
@MHTableTennis4 жыл бұрын
I'm contacting between the bottom and the back side of the ball usually. I find it useful to start more open and finish more closed so I can maintain one motion when I want to change the contact or spin. For your second question, I am pushing my racket parallel, but my body rotation creates a bit of curvature towards the table and I bring my racket around a bit on the follow-through.
@MHTableTennis4 жыл бұрын
It does take a lot of practice to get a really decent contact to produce a strong kick, you will actually feel the ball really cling and then propel from your racket with this one I feel

Hello , when i serve this the ball doesn't bend , it only goes forwards , could you give me any tips?
@smallgamer21984 жыл бұрын
But it looks like a backspin!!!??? How come the ball gets topspin when you brush the ball in side ways and sometimes it looks ur brushing under the ball. How does it get topspin?????
@MHTableTennis4 жыл бұрын
I try and make all of my serves look like backspin even pendulum and regular. If you watch my other video on changing spin on pendulum serve you will see, the tightenining direction of thumb and finger is the only important detail and it's incredibly subtle, so what people see and what is happening are hopefully different :D
@smallgamer21984 жыл бұрын
@@MHTableTennisthank you for the reply. so literally you are contacting at the top of the ball?
@MHTableTennis4 жыл бұрын
@@smallgamer2198 No I'm either contacting the bottom of the ball and pushing across to make side-top, or i'm contacting between the bottom and the back of the ball to come up a little more. If you contact the top of the ball then it's too obvious that the ball will be topspin. It definitely takes some practice! :)
@lightawake2 жыл бұрын
@@MHTableTennis hi there, just to confirm, does that mean that what's generating the sidetopspin is really just the split second pressure from the thumb? Is the rest of the arm and body are actually quite relaxed? Also, when the body rotates, is there weight transfer from the back foot, or can the weight mainly stay on the front foot from the start? Thanks :)
@MHTableTennis2 жыл бұрын
@@lightawake yes keep the other parts relaxed so they can move quickly and transfer energy evenly. There is a little weight transfer yes usually when the ball is tossed weight comes up a little off the front foot then back down onto it
