On Hunter what Mark Bell and Björk are doing is that that they use the combinations of accents to have four different levels of accents and create swells. So unaccented, global accent, accented and accented + global accent is used to have four levels of accents in that order to create an effect of a roll that gets louder. So when you are doing the unaccented, accented, unaccented, accented series of four beats that you have a couple of times, then BOTH the second ones should have a global accent, and then you get that swelling roll Hunter has. Other than that, good job!

Hi Lennart! Love your vids on the 909 - whoever reads this, go check out Lennarts vids on the 909! Really appreciate your input here. Here I use three velocity levels here and found that to be sufficient to get the swell. I did mess around with the unaccented+global accent but I thought I was closer with what I show here. Guess its a matter of what your ears tell you. Im going to pin this comment - folks give this a try a see what sounds best, use your ears and be creative! Thank you again very much for the comment Lennart - Im a fan of your work!

Lennart forgot to mention that the potentiometer for the accent has to be set to 10 o'clock so that the 4 different volumes really increase evenly! Greetings from Germany TIP: If the bass drum doesn't have enough power, set the accent poti to 2 o'clock. This is the opposite of the 10 o'clock setting, with a slightly more uneven rise in volume but much more end volume.

I am female. I trained as a classical singer, sang opera, and have a doctorate in voice performance. I've been teaching singing for over 30 years. Before Covid I sang and played keys in a rock band for about 5 years. At 62, I am a keyboard player, drummer and I'm writing songs using Bitwig and an MPC one. I'm loving every minute of it - way better for my aging mind than crossword puzzles! Thanks for the video!

Hi hello. I am a musician / female producer and audio engineer, bassist. (Trained, interned, worked in analog board / outboard tape op studios during the 90s through early 2k’s). We exist. I have the tr8s and the tr-09. I found as much as I love the both of them I have been playing drums in real time on my mpc live with the time control off for a lot of projects these days. Came here for some juice and inspiration to go back into the tr8s and do some programming. I’m from the era, so really nice to see this break down of hunter, etc. thank you.

Sophia welcome! YT was telling me in my channel statistics that literally 100% of my viewers were men - which I found hard to believe. Thanks for sharing - impressive experience. Hunter is actually really kind in that the kick and snare are hard panned left and right so its easier to suss out whats going on.

This is the best drum machine tutorial I’ve seen. You get right to it. No bs. You show and tell every step, and that really helps when one is still struggling to learn the controls by heart. This is so great to have these Classic beats correctly executed, and given to us so complete. Thank you! The Björk beat was brilliant! I love how she made the 909 morph into Björk’s minion.

"Vogue!" Hehe, I remember it was one of the first grooves I put into Octamed,l an 8 track tracker on the Amiga back in the early 90:s. Before I got to own any real Synth or drum machines. Got the 909-sounds from other songs made in Octamed... It really had that fantastic groove and together with Technotronics it really put the 909 into use for the more commercial dance music. Kinda started the "euro dance" sound of the 90:s. And the dance sound in general. These iconic hihat and snare patterns! Yes, blackbox kind of did it too with "ride on time" , but it was a mixture of other drum sounds with mostly just 909 snares and maybe hihats.

The #RolandTR909 is my religion, for real. I adore its sound and groove and also the workflow and its "limited" but for sure not limiting feature set 🙂 --- One thing I noticed immediately is that you have the Total Accent knob all the way up! Which literally KICKS A**, hehe. But you're not really using the total accent "instrument", right? Why so?
@ksmusiclounge1648
@ksmusiclounge1648 Жыл бұрын
I am - in Hunter, without it you cant get that bouncy feel the original has, without it is really flat and boring. Once the total accent kicks in its a totally different groove. As Igor Stravinsky - one of the greatest composers of all time - said: "My freedom will be so much the greater and more meaningful the more narrowly I limit my field of action and the more I surround myself with obstacles.” Great words - true creative freedom only exists with well defined borders. Without them, you descent into chaos and option paralysis.

I don't think any money changed hands, and nor was Kevin Saunderson given a writing credit for the Madonna song, but there is a similarity between the first line of Madonna's verse "Look around..." and the chorus of "Ain't Nobody Better". I think that Shep Pettibone and Madonna were desperately trying to be hip in '89 so probably listened to lots of house tracks in the studio (no doubt including the trio of smashes that Inner City released as techno hit the mainstream) while they were putting Vogue together. The use of the 909 was a transparent attempt at making a club track. What went almost unnoticed for 20 years was that Vogue's horn stabs were sampled from an old Salsoul disco track that Shep Pettibone had himself mixed back in the '70s. Legal action was taken about that 22 years after Vogue came out.

Hey! Yup, 1 month ago I had cca 250 subs and my KZbin analytics showed that I had 0 female viewers - which seemed not right. That has since grown to a staggering 0.5% :-) anyway, hope you stay!

Thanks for the video. Did people here actually try out to program these beats as explained in the video? If I do, I get completely different beats from the ones sounding in the video. You're missing some steps in your tutorial, and mix up terms like open and closed hi hats. A bit confusing...!

Hi Lucy! So we have 3 female specimens! 😂 KZbin definitely got this wrong. As I replied somewhere, in my next vid Im going to show y’all a screen shot of how KZbin sees my audience - 0% females 😂 Polite as I am, I always like to address the ladies first, but upon seeing this I was like “why should I do that for, no females here apparently - but lets make sure”. Aaand sure enough KZbin is wrong! 😂💪

The 909 is 40 years old now ! Hard to believe those thumping beats it became synonymous with, ‘could’ have been made as long ago as 1983! They just weren’t 🤷‍♂️

Skinny Puppy released an album with 909 beats an '84, and Larry Heard made house beats on a 909 in 1986. Check out the deep house classic 'Can You Feel It' by Mr Fingers if you don't know it. (It also has a prominent ride cymbal more commonly recognised as being from the 707, but I think that some 909 models had different samples to other editions).

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when 'Sports' came out in ’83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically.

Yup, true that! As Stravinski said - “My freedom will be so much the greater and more meaningful the more narrowly I limit my field of action and the more I surround myself with obstacles. The more constraints one imposes, the more one frees one's self of the chains that shackle the spirit."
