The tool you need is on the workbench. Take your torch and heat it up. It won't get hot enough to hurt the temper on the head. If you char the outside of the wood slightly it will fall right out.
@jonathangardner4475 Жыл бұрын
I actually spent a few hours a few days ago trying to remove handles! I think they heat and add moisture to curve the wood into the head. The nicer tools seem made that way.
@stanleygraber6847 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathangardner4475 I think you're probably correct. I guess I should have been more clear. Use the blow torch to remove broken handle. Just heat the head, and the wood inside chars slightly, loosening the handle.

As a wee lad in Arkansas, we farmed rice. I "accidentally" broke a couple of shovel handles in maybe a week. My father didn't yell and didn't chastise me, he merely welded a steel pipe onto the shovel and informed me, that was the only one I was allowed to use from that point on.
@originaldanman Жыл бұрын
I first drill mine out, and if they are not split I cut a slit in the steel to separate if I need to. Also, the best handle is a pole from a chain link fence, takes about 10 minutes and it's not any heavier then a wooden handle. The only down side is that it gets hot if you leave it in the sun. All my gardening tools get steel handles, and you can find them for free in dumpsters.
@jackjohnson291 Жыл бұрын
I like metal for anything that takes lots of abuse, but it also can get slippery when wet, in addition to getting hot in the sun. Of course, a little bit of Wilson wrap or the like is a big help for both.

Im glad you pointed out the orientaion of the grain. I actually look for that when i have to buy a new tool to start with and also with the replacements. That was actually one of the best lessons i learned from a college professor. He was an old dude who grew up on a cotton farm in LA and often told stories from his farming youth and incorporated into some classroom lesson. Ive forgotten much of the academic lessons from those days, but have never forgotten and often apply the lesson about grain orientation for wood handles, and even other applications of wood. Thanks much for what you all do.

Great channel! An old timer taught me about running the grains properly in a handle along time ago. Manufactures deliberately offset the grains in the handles so that the shovel will break hence making you have to go out and buy a new one. Think of a long bow and how the grains are positioned for maximum flex without breaking, this is easy to look up if you don’t know what I mean. You simply install the handle in the same fashion as you intend to handle to bend on the shovel just like a bow. and believe it or not Hickory really is one of the best to use, never heard of anyone using locus so I’m curious as to how well it works. Thanks for your channel!

@andrewhammill6148 Жыл бұрын
The one you couldn't get the handle out: Take an old heavy duty flat head screwdriver and line it up with where the metal on the shovel wraps around and meets. Hammer it in between the seem and it opens up enough to get the handle out. Of course, this method would be a lot easier if you hadn't already cut the handle off, but you could probably use some vice grips to help with that on the remaining handle.

A decent tutorial. I've been replacing tool handles out of dire neccessity for most of my life, being broke and all, and I assure you that what you're doing is good. It is ABSOLUTELY OK to show any oops problems in the tutorial, as this shows your ability to overcome problems as they appear. I recommend before you do your next show & tell, reflect on your experience and whatever source materials you can find (books are OK, and always reference them), THEN script your presentation. This will give a smoother presentation. One other thing is, find and show how to turn the edge of a scraper card, which BTW does NOT have to be purchased, but can be made out of an old scrap handsaw blade. Also consider showing how you can cut the blade, deburr it and make custom scrapers for inside and outside curves....this will prove VERY useful on future projects, and adds to your experience.

See the bend in the ferrule? You need to soak the wood for at least a couple days so that it can flex as you drive it out . . . died handle wood in an Nadler ferrule is next to impossible to remove, even without adhesives. You’d be better off with an old auger bit and a narrow chisel if you don’t soak it. Likewise, you need to soak the end of the new handle if you intend for it to flex sufficiently to make it to the bottom of the bent ferrule.

Pre drill for a lengthy lag bolt and I'm mean long. You have to pre drill so that you're not expanding the wood. You need at least 2 to 3 inches of bolt in solid wood. Get a thick heavy duty washer at least 3/4 diameter. Then you'll need a length of pipe that will slide back and forth with a decent range of motion between the shovel head and the washer. Set your shovel upside down in the vice and voila you've got yourself a little slide hammer for taken out broken handles.

So here is my two cent opinion. 1 If you are afraid to pound on your machinist vise then you need a new vise or a stronger bench. 2. Long handled pointed shovel heads are generally speaking either stamped or forged. Forged are stronger, heavier, more expensive and will last a lifetime without flexing or bending (which makes them easier to use if you actually dig as opposed to just move lose material). 3. For some reason the wooden handle on my long handed forged steel pointed shovel has never broken. I suspect it is the overall quality of the product. It is 30 years old, regularly used for digging in rocky soil and never loaned. 4. Pointed shovels should be accompanied by a digging bar, pick or a backhoe unless you like replacing handles. If used around a backhoe buy a cheap stamped steel shovel because it will likely only be used for moving dislodged or lose material, left on the site, go missing and probably be driven over. Don’t hold on to it while it is being driven over!

possible a mini hacksaw($6-10) could be used too🤔(save money) or just buy the blade ($2-13) and take your time. (little dangerous) for the rivets. may be a spring clamp ($1.00 at homedepot) or c clamp ($5-6) buy/free scrap sheet of wood or may be pallet to hold down the shovel(harbor fright has vice for $30-40 if you got bench/table). also in my research looking at handle($10-25), the handle market is overpriced. shovels ($10-40) so cheapest scenario is hacksaw blade ($2), spring clamp ($1), shank wooden handle, ($10) free pallet and concert, drill corded/less(new $14-20/38)(used $10 corded) rivets/bolt&nut ($4/0.40) and (with rivet) propane torch ($40) . $10.40-61 dollars for the project. cost of tools and materials can be a Hender to some. fix or buy is the question?
