Great video, I like the way you presented the content. Better than most. Maybe you could do a video on how you control your landing trajectory. There are a lot of videos out there about how to jump and do drops but I have not seen anything on how to control your landing trajectory after you leave the ground. How about a video on what you need to do if your landing area is sloped downhill, uphill or even flat. Even on drops, a sloped or flat landing area. How do you deal with the landings.

For that handlebar height drop, minimum front and rear travel that you’d be okay with???
@TheLoamWolf8 ай бұрын
That’s all rider skill/desire preference. I could do it on a hardtail, but I’d rather do it with 120mm front and back and I’d be even happier to do it with 140mm out back. The Delano in this video is a 140/160 rear/front.

How important is saddle position for executing these techniques? As a taller rider, my normal pedaling seat height puts my center of gravity up quite high. Getting my body weight low enough to initiate pre load and pedal scoop motions is very difficult to do at full saddle height. I find myself having to constantly adjust my dropper on the fly. On fast, flowy trails, the timing of this can be difficult. Is this just something that’s inherently more difficult for taller riders or is there some technique at full saddle height that I’m just not getting?
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
Hey Gabes, if you notice in every one of the examples shown, the dropper post is down. Regardless of rider height, the saddle will definitely get in the way of many dynamic movements for climbing, descending and cornering. Dropper posts have become invaluable assets for mountain bikers, so don’t feel like you’re using it too much! Don’t make things harder or more dangerous than they need to be, get that thing out of your way and you’ll start cleaning techs climbs, cornering better and descending more confidently.
@jimwing.21788 ай бұрын
The whole point of dropper posts is the ability to adjust saddle height on-the-fly. On fast, flowy trails, you should be standing on your pedals with the saddle fully lowered.

#TheLoamWolf .... Any chance you can try this just to see if it is as simple as I find it. Coming from a background of traillriding (early 80's up to a few years ago on my YZ 2pokes...) I'm an 'OK' MTB'er but getting a little long in the tooth for doubles etc... It actually took a while to get into drops over axle height and when I did it was still all sorts of wrong.... but I finally found such an easy way that feels soooo comfortable Very similar to this video... Shoulders down in a 'Prepared' stance as you roll in... but rather than a pedal preload... just a bar preload... and THATS IT.... No push forward (unless your going too slow) but that saves the pushout for that moment when something went wrong and you need something extra. (I saved myself in just a situation when distracted and braked on a 1m drop with a call of rider down, then without thinking rolled off the 1m rather than stopping... a slow roll, front only preload and a pushout got me over a 1m drop at near walking pace... I did a mediocre video on it... I found depending on the speed.. from about a running pace, I can drop 1m to flat.. (ok I have an old Giant Faith 0 so 7" helps but the landings are slight nose down and so simple I don't get caught with odd body positioning..) As mentioned... I'm just Mediocre... but over 50 I prefer a style that leaves me feeling completely at ease.. and with such a simplistic idea... (Unlike the 'lift and dead sailor' method I was still doing on my 1st 1m drop I video's a year or so previous).

assuming conditions are all the same and approachspeed is all the same , my front wheel lift should all be the same height/ effort regardless of drop height ?
@TheLoamWolf7 ай бұрын
Well, that is the tough part of mountain biking, or any sport really...There are so many variables from angle of the drop surface to angle of landing, the speed you approach, the height of drop etc... This skill, combined with many others all work together to give the rider the best chances to adapt on the fly to the drop coming right at them. I believe this skill is one of the most fundamental to keep yourself safe if you unexpectedly encounter a drop last minute, or are new to drops and struggle in keeping your front wheel up. BUT, to answer your question as briefly as possible, it will be pretty close to the same effort/height for lift. HOWEVER, the big caveat is, how long that front wheel needs to hang up in the air until the rear wheel clears the ledge, which is also how long, or how fast you need to shift your butt and center off mass forward or backward on the bike to prepare for and absorb the landing! A nuance that is very important to a strong body position for landing and the recovery maneuvering needed after the drop and to prepare for what's next.

There are a variety of different types of drops and techniques to coincide with the speed, rider skillset and landing. We made this video for riders who are not hitting 8-20 foot drops and nosing into landings since, they probably already have this basic skill and technique dialed in. This is for slower speed trail drops where landings are not present or ledges where people are trying to work up the courage and technique to get down safely before progressing to the next step.

I have never seen on you tube a more incorrect method for drops. It should be , low on the bike. . Chin over the handle bars. Feet pushing into pedals And elbows bent , as you leave the drop push firmly down or forward ,. NEVER lift the front wheel doing that only makes the landing harsh and un stable
@TheLoamWolf2 ай бұрын
There is more than one way to go off a drop And depending on the size of the drop, and the speed of the drop, different techniques apply. The drop technique you are describing is for faster, high speed drops. And likely ones with a landing. It is a technique we use often while riding. However, this technique is also a useful one and is a great beginner skill to master.

@@TheLoamWolf Thank you for your reply I do appreciate the time taken to do so Lifting the front wheel can make the drop higher ? That’s not the goal , is it? Keep up the good work

I didn’t think anyone would still call that “a proper technique”. People please don’t do drops like that, eventually you will get hurt. Just watch some enduro / dh races, no one does this method - maybe there is a reason for it?
@TheLoamWolf Жыл бұрын
This video isn't really intended to help or offer insight to people who are racing DH or enduro. As speeds, steepness and skills progress it's certainly understood that body position, technique and timing change dramatically. This is designed as a more basic principle of learning to shift body weight, work on timing and control the bicycle beneath you for slower speed and smaller drops for riders who are looking to gain skills and insights before going off bigger drops with speed and momentum behind them.
