As an ASA and US/Sailing Instructor, I can tell you that the one week "zero-to-hero" courses are NOT a good way to get into bareboat chartering. Charter companies want to see a sailing resume that includes boats similar to the one that you will be chartering. I always recommend that my ASA 104 students get a Skippered Charter for their first adventure in new waters. The Skipper will be responsible for helping if anything that goes wrong, they will know the best bars & restaurants in the area, and they LOVE to have crew that is engaged in planning the cruise and sailing the boat.

Thanks for the video. I've been a lifetime dingy freshwater sailor and am looking to take a bareboat course. Any advice on whats a good bvi school who would do a private charter for just my wife and I?

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with specific sailing schools in the BVI. Wish I could help.

Blah Blah Blah. You will not be able to bareboat charter after these courses. Your experience in your logbook as a skipper will let you rent the boat and after these courses your skippering experience is ZERO. Oh no? Just ask your instructor to take out the boat on your own and see what response you get. The charter company wants to see how much time you have as skipper, not as a crew member under instruction. Take these courses and others to learn to sail yes, absolutely, but don't believe for one second you're taking a boat out on your own.
