Composition is basically the design of a scene. There are many different options when it comes to designing a drawing or art piece. One good guideline to remember is to determine what your focal area is - the statement you are trying to make and where you want your viewers to look. Then, build the rest of your drawing or sketch around this area. What can you do to lead their eye around the drawing and stop at the focal area? Think about this before you start drawing.

Yeah, I've heard of The Rule of Thirds before but didn't really understand it. After this lesson, I'm finding that I'm looking for the thirds in whatever piece of artwork that I like. Thank you so much for these tutorials! I'm 57 and finally ready to embrace my artistic side. Art was something that was not appreciated or encouraged while I was growing up. I have done photography for the last 10 years. It was and is a huge part of my therapy. Sometimes a picture can convey feelings so much more than words.
